To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE LEMLEUX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vashburn, in the county of Bayfield and State of Visconsin, have invented new and of this class which is comparatively simple in construction, inexpensive and which may be positioned at a station so as to be readilyy swung and to have its operating device contacted by an offset provided upon the car to project the mail from a suitable barrel or cylinder into the said car.
lVith the above, and other objects in view, which will be more apparent as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying` drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement, and in which drawings:

In the accompanying drawings the nu- `meral 1 designates the improved mail delivering apparatus. This device 1 comprises essentially a base member 2 having a pivot 3 to which is connected the offset member 4 of the vertical arm or post 5. The oset member 4 is provided with a pivoted latch 6, the same being adapted to contact with the bifurcated extension of a pair of retaining members or offsets 7. By Vreference to F ig. 3 of the drawings it will be noted that these offsets are arranged at a substantially right angle to each other, and it will be noted that the llatch 6 may be thrown into engagement with either of the said members 7 so as to lock the post in its outer or operative position, or to also lock the post in its inner or inoperative position. The outer face of the offset member 4 of the post 5 is provided with a groove 8, the latter being received within an oii'set lip 9 provided upon asegmental track 10.
The upper extremity of the post 1 is provided with a suitable barrel or cylinder 11,
j the same being open at one of its ends and being adapted for the reception of a piston 12 carried by a piston rod 13. This piston rod 13 is mounted within a suitable bearing 14 secured upon the rear face of the post 1 and the cylinder 11 is of a suliicient size to ret-ain one or more mail bags. The piston rod 13 has its outer extremity provided with a head 15, and this head is adapted to be contacted by an oifset finger 16 provided upon, what I term, the operative trigger 17. The trigger 17 is pivotally connected as at 18, with an olfset formed upon the enlargement 14 of the post and the outer extremity of the said trigger is provided with a longitudinally extending bore, the same being adapted for the reception of a trigger extension 19. This extension 19 is retained in proper adjusted position upon the bore of the member 17 through the medium of a suitable thumb nut 20, and the extension 19 is adapted, when in operative position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, to lie within the path of an offset contact member 21 provided upon the side of a car 22.
The numeral 23 designates a rearwardly extending bifurcated arm provided upon the post 5 and pivotally connected between the bifurcated extensions of this arm is a member 24. The member 24 is provided with an offset lip 25, positioned, preferably directly above its pivotal connection with the bifurcated arm of the member 23, and removably connected with the said offset is a flattened spring member 26. The upper extremity of this member 26 is adapted to lie in a suitable bearing 27 provided upon the head 15 of the piston rod 13, and it is to be noted that the said spring 27 is adapted to exert a pressure upon the head 15 so as to force t-he piston 12 within the barrel or cylinder 11. The forwardly projecting portion of the member 24 is provided with a suitable bore, and this bore is adapted to receive the extremity of one arm 28 of an operating device 29. The second arm 30 of this operating device has its lower extremity provided with a pair of bifurcated ears which are adapted to straddle the member 28 and to be pivotally connected therewith. The upper extremity of this arm 30 is provided with an offset 31, and the said olfset is adapted to normally contact the iattened spring member 26, so as to allow the trigger 17 to be swung upon its pivot 18 and to engage with the head 15 of the piston rod 13 and to lock its members in this position. Secured to the forward end of the member 24 is one end convolution of a resilient element 31, while the opposite end convolution of the said element is connected with the post 5 as indicated by the numeral 24a. By this arrangement, it will be noted that the spring member 31a materially assists the spring member 26, so that when the device is set, and the mail deposited within the barrel or cylinder, 1l, the movement of the swinging trigger 17 will allow the piston head to eject the mail from the cylinder 11 with sufficient force to insure all of the mail being deposited within the car 6.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I have provided a comparatively simple and effective device for the purpose intended, one which comprises a comparatively few number of parts, one wherein the device may be locked out of engagement with the passing trains when it is not desired to deliver mail to the trains and one wherein the operating levers or members 21 may be removed from the device when not required, and it is to be further understood that while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the improvement, as it now appears to me, minor details of construction within the scope of the following claims may be resorted to when desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed isl. In a device for the purpose intended, a base, a segmental top upon the base, a post having an offset member pivotally connected with the base, and engaging the segmental track, swinging latch members carried by the odset of the post, studs upon the piston and adapted to be engaged by the latch member, a cylinder carried by the post, a piston within the cylinder, a rod for the piston provided with an offset head, spring members normally contacting the offset head, a pivoted trigger provided with a depending finger adapted to engage the offset of the rod, and means consisting of an offset provided upon the car adapted to cont-act the trigger to swing its finger out of engagement with the offset piston rod.
2. In a device of the class described, a base, a post provided with an oset member pivotally connected with thel base, a segmental track upon the base provided with an offset projecting portion, the offset of the post being provided with a pocket adapted for engagement with the said offset, pivoted latch members for retaining the post at an angle to the base, a cylinder member connected with the post, a piston for the cylinder, a rod provided with an offset connected with the piston, a swinging trigger normally contacting the offset of the piston, an eX- tension for the trigger, means comprising an offset carried by the qcar for swinging the trigger, and means "comprising a spring member for forcing the piston within the cylinder.
3. In a device for the purpose set forth, a receiving member, a projecting member, resilient means for normally forcing the delivering member upon the receiving member, a pivoted trigger member for normally preventing this movement, said trigger member being provided with a longitudinally eX- tending pocket, a trigger extension within said pocket, means for adjusting the eXtension within the pocket, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a device for the purpose set forth, a base, a post pivotally connected with said base, a cylinder upon the post, a piston for the cylinder, a rod for the piston, an offset member upon the rod, a pivoted trigger member adapted to normally contact the offset of the piston rod, a member pivotally connected with the post, said member being provided with a spring adapted to contact with the offset of the rod, a resilient member connected with the extension of the pivoted member, an operating element removably connected with this pivoted member, said element comprising a pair of arms pivotally connected together, and one of said arms having its extremity offset and adapted to contact with the spring engaging the oset of the piston rod.
