Description
T. HERBIG. HANDSAW BLOWER AND HANGER. APPLIOATIOE FILED JAN. 5, 191
Patented Aug. 2, 1910.
THOMAS HERBIG, or HORNBROOK, CALIFORNIA.
HANDSAW BLOWER AND HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A116". '2, 191i).
Application filed January 5, 1910. Serial No. 536,467.
To all whom it ma'y concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS Hnnnre, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hornbrook, in the county of Siskiyou and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Handsaw Blowers and Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for hand saws, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be attached to the handle of any ordinary saw comprising a bulb provided with a depending tube which bulb, being adapted upon compression to blow the saw-dust incidental to the movement of the saw upon the board so as to leave the line or scribe which the saw is to follow perfectly discernible, the device at the same time being provided with a yoke having a spike extension whereby the saw may be sustained from any horizontal support.
With the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred em,- bodiment of the improvement, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improvement applied to a saw and the method of operating the same. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view upon the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device showing the same sustaining a saw upon a support. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the lower portion of the compressible bulb and the upper portion of the tube to which the bulb is connected. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the yoke provided upon the tube.
It is well known in the trade that the lines scribed upon a board to be cut frequently become indiscernible through the saw-dust raked by the teeth of the saw upon the said board, so that the mechanic using the saw is frequently forced to stop in his work to remove the saw dust from the scribe in order that he can make a perfectly straight and true cut. It is the primary object of the present invention to overcome this defect by providing the blower whereby the saw dust may be easily and surely removed from the path of the cut saw handle with a removable of the saw by the mere compression of an air bulb positioned adjacent to and adapted to be operated by the thumb of the mechanic when the saw is operated.
In the accompanying drawing-the numeral 1 designates the saw, which is of any ordinary or preferred construction and 2 the handle therefor. The handle 2 is also of the ordinary construction being provided with a central cut away portion adapted for the reception of the hand of the operator.
The numeral 3 designates the improved blower. This blower comprises essentially a flexible air bulb 4, which has formed therein an outlet lip or tube 5, and the said lip is adapted for the reception of the upper portion of a preferably metallic tube 6. This upper port-ion of the tube 6 is provided with an annular bead or rim 7 which when the members 4 and 6 are in engagement with each other, as illustrated in Fig. 4E of the drawings, engages the inner face of the bulb adjacent its tube or outlet 5. The tube 6 is also provided with a funnel-shaped member 8 which has its outer enlarged portion provided with an annular bead 9, and the said annular bead is adapted to engage the outer face of the bulb 4.- so as to effectively support the tube upon the bulb. The tube 6 has its lower portion bent inwardly toward the blade of the saw 1 so that the same lies.
close to the said saw and the said tube terminates a suitable distance away from the teeth of the saw so that when the bulb 4 is compressed the air will be forced through the tube and deflected from the face of the said saw.
Integrally formed with, or otherwise secured to the funnel-shaped member 8 of the tube 6 is a yoke member 10. This member 10 has its arms 11 and 12 extended downwardly a suitable distance so that the said arms may be inserted through the hand opening of the saw handle 2 to straddle the same. The arm 12, which is positioned farthest from the bulb 4: is provided with a threaded opening, and the said opening is adapted for the reception of a threaded retaining element 13, the said element being screwed tightly against the face of the handle 2 so as to removably connect the device with the handle, and at the same time it will be noted that the tube 6 may be adjusted in any desired relation with the blade 1 of the saw. The lower extremity of the arm 12 is brought to a point as indicated by the numeral l4, and the said point is adapted to be inserted Within a suitable support 15, such as the horizontal surface of a fence or the like.
From the above description, taken in connection With the accompanying drawing, it will be noted that it is merely necessary for the operator grasping the saw handle 2 to position his thumb adjacent the bulb 4 and upon compression of the said bulb the air will be forced through the tube 6 so as to scatter and remove the saw-dust upon the board being operated upon, and it will be further noted that by providing the arm 12 of the yoke with the sharpened point 14: the
saw as well as the device may be effectively sustained upon a suitable support, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the improvement, as it now appears to me, minor details of construction, within the scope of the following claims may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. The combination with a hand saw, of a compressible air bulb provided with a metallic tube, a yoke secured to the tube, a thumb screw for one of the arms of the yoke, and said arm having its extremity pointed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination With a hand saw, of a flexible air bulb, said bulb being provided with a tube extension, a metallic tubular member adapted to be inserted Within the said extension, said metallic tube having its upper extremity provided with an annular oifset, a funnel-shaped cone member secured to the metallic tube and havlng its upper extremity provided with an annular ofi'set adapted to bear upon the outer face of the flexible bulb, a yoke member secured to the funnel-shaped member of the tube, and means for removably connecting the yoke member to the handle of the saw.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS HERBIG.
