To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DONALD RAwsTRoN, of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brake shoes of the type in which a malleable attaching lug is used with its ends anchored in the cast body of the shoe and my object is to devise means for connecting the lug to the body so that the lug is not easily damaged by careless handling and so that, in molding, the
lug is always properly placed thus insuring the space for the key being always the same and avoiding all trouble due to shoes not properly fitting the brake heads.
My invention is applied to a brake shoe having, at the back, longitudinal malleable reinforcing strips. The lug is formed of a malleable metal strap having legs cast in the body of the shoe and provided with feet engaging the under sides of the reinforcing strips. The cast metal of the shoe extends upv within the lug to form a key seat and the lug is anchored to the sides of the seat by having dovetailed holes formed in its legs into which the cast metal of the seat is flooded.
Figure l is a plan view of the back of a brake shoe constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same, and Fig. Ll: a longitudinal section through part of the middle portion of the brake shoe.

A is the body of the brake shoe formed of cast metal.
B are malleable metal reinforcing strips cast in theA back of the shoe in the process of manufacture. These strips are dovetailed in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 3, to cause them to be securely held in position. Extending above the level of the back of the shoe is a cast projection C intended to form a seat for the key ordinarily employed Speceation of Letters Patent.

The legs are preferably provided with outwardly bent feet Z) engaging the under sides of the reinforcing strips B as shown particularly in Fig. 3.
IVhile a lug constructed as described is amply strong when in use, yet it will readily be seen that it may be easily deformed by any force applied to it from the outside. I therefore find it necessary to lock the legs to the seats C to secure the necessary stiffness to prevent the lug being damaged by careless handling in transportation. I secure the desired lock by forming dovetailed holes c in each leg a. Into these holes the cast metal of the seat is flooded in the process of manufacture. The legs are thus securely locked to the sides of the seat C and the possibility of damage to the lug is thus minimized owing to the reduction of the dimensions of the unattached portion of the lug.
The feet Z2 of the lug being engaged with the undersides of the reinforcing strips which have a definite position in the mold when the shoe is being cast the position of the lug itself is accurately determined, so that in all shoes cast the space between the top of the lug and the seat C will always be of the same dimensions and bear the same position relative to the back of the shoe.
From the above description it will be seen that I have devised a shoe which embodies a construction satisfactorily attaining the objects of my invention as set out in the preamble to this specification.
What I claim as my invention is l. In a brake shoe the combination of a cast metal body portion having a cast metal key seat projecting from its back; and a malleable lug having its legs cast in the body at each side of the said seat and having dovetailed holes formed in its legs into which the cast metal of the seat is flooded.
2. In a brake shoe the combination of a east metal body portion having a cast metal key sent projecting from its back; a inalleable lug having its legs cast in Jche body at each side of jche said seat und having dovetailed holes formed in its legs into which the cast metal of the seat is flooded; longitudnal malleable metal reinforcing strips;
and feet on the legs of the lug engaging the under sides of said strips.
