To all whom. it my concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES Prnmrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chairs, of which the following 'is a specification;

This invention relates to improvements in chairs, and the object thereof is to provide a chair having a supporting frame on which the chair seat 1s plvoted so as to permit horizontal movement of the same, said pivoting means provided with locking means whereby the seat may belocked in a preferred position.

The invention further contemplates providing a chair with a hinged back having adjustable braces to permit the same to be secured in an upright position, lowered to a horizontal position, or adjusted in any intermediate position and there locked.

A further object of the invention is to provide one or both of the side arms of the chair with him es so that they can be swung downwardly, t e chair being provided with looking devices for locking the supports for the arm in an upright position, when desired, said locking device provided with a trigger for releasing it and a sprin for normally maintaining the locking device in operative position for locking the arm in an upright position.

The invention especially contemplates that by providing two similar frames, each equipped with a chair seat and uniting said frames together, the two chairs may be combined into a duplicate chair with each chair seat thereof independently movable, the two capable of being shifted into various positions with respect to each other to form different combinations such as a tete-d-tete, a m's-d-ois, or when placed in another position the two chairs may constitute a lounge or bed, to the end that a pairof chairs temporarily secured together may serve the purpose of a number of pieces of furniture and make the use of the same. comfortable and desirable, thereby providing'a useful, ornamental and serviceable artlcle, either for a parlor, library or porch, depending somelwlgat on the finish imparted to the chair.

With the foregoing andother objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts constituting the invention to be hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereo wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but 1t 1s to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to whlch come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

In the drawings in which similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the different figures: Figure 1 is a perspective view of two supporting chair frames. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a single chair, complete. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the chair seat and the top of the supporting frame and the looking device for securing the seat to the frame. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view. of a portion of the rear of a chair seat, showing the means for hinging the back thereof to the seat. Fig. 5 is a view in section ofthe chair seat and a portion of'one of the arms, illustrating the means for hinging the arm to the seat and locking the same 1n an upright position; and, Fig. 6 is an inverted plan View of a common locking device for the two uprights of one of the arms.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference numerals l and 2 denote two chair-supporting frames, each of which is provided with a top 3 in which is a transversely-extending slot fl. The tops 4 are supported by a plurality of legs 5 preferably connected by cross-bars 6. It 1s contemplated in use that these two supporting frames will be connected by fastenmg devices, designated in the drawings by the reference numeral 7, so that they may be separated from each other, or united and secured together through the medium of these devices. Mounted on each of the tops 3 is a chair seat 8 having a recess 9 in its under face to receive the headed end 10 of a depending exteriorly-threaded bolt 11 which is adapted to pass through the slot 4 and projectbelow the same to receive a nut 12, above which may be placed a washer 13, if desired. By this construction, when the hand nuts 12 are loosened, the chair seats may be shifted toward or away from each other to permit their horizontal revolution without interfering with each other and when arranged in a suitable position the hand nuts may be tightened,'thereby fixedly securing each of the chair seats in position.

one ormore arms 14 supported by uprights 15 preierably united by cross-bars 16. The lower nds of the uprights 15 are arranged when the arm is in an upright position to rest upon the upper face of the chair seat 8, and in order to permit it to be swung outwardly and downwardly there is formed in the lower end of each of the uprights 15 a longitudinally-extending slot 17 in which is secured by pins 18 the upper end of a hinge member 19 which comprises a plate of metal provided with a depending portion 20 suitably apertured to receive a pivoting bolt 21 and: further provided wit a depending catch 22, for a purpose to be later described. The under face of the chair seat 8 is provided with a recess 23 in which and secured by holdfast devices 2d are two plates 25 and 26 each provided with apair o integral tube-like projections 27 the members of each pair spaced from each other to constitute the other portion of the hinge for the uprights of the arm. The lower apertured end of the hinge member 19 is inserted n the s ace between the members of each pair 27 o" tube-like projections and the pins 21' inserted through the cooperating members of the hinge. Each of the plates 25 and 26 is provided with a downwardly-turned slotted flange 28, the slot in which serves to constitute guiding means for a horizontally swinging bar 29 pivoted on a pivot 30 placed intermediate the plates 25 and 26 and mounted in said recess 23. The plates 25 and 26 are provided approximately centrally with slotted openings 31 through which the catches 22 on the cotiperating hinge members on the uprights 15 of the arms are adapted to ass and project sufliciently to permit the ocking bar 29 to engage the notches in each catch and thereby detachably secure the arm in an upright position. The catches 22 on the hinge members 19 of the uprights 15 of each arm will be so formed that the notches therein will be turned in opposite directions with respect to each other, so that when the locking bar '29 is shifted in one direction it will be drawn into operative relation with both catches s1- multaneously. v

Mounted on the plate 26 is a spring 32 to normally hold the locking bar 29 in an operative position to cover a portion of each of the slotted openings 31, but leaving sufiicient space for the pointed end of the catches to pass through these openings and ermit the inclined faces of the catches to shift the bar sufficiently to allow these catches to pass through the slotted openings a sufficient distance to bring the notched portions thereof into position to cooperate with the locking bar 29 and be thereby temporarily secured from withdrawal and thus hold the uprights of the arm fixedly in position. Secured to one end'of the locking bar 29 is a release eeaeea trigger 33 preferably secured to the plate 26 by a supporting member 34 in order to permit the outer free end of the trigger 33 to project laterallfy from the chair seat into a position to be easily manipulated by the user. of the, .chair.

The back of the chair comprises (preferably) two uprights 41 united near their upper ends by a cross bar 42 and near the lower ends by a cross bar 43 between which preferably extend a plurality of slats 4d. The lower ends of each of the uprights 4C1 is provided with an upwardly-extending mediallyplaced slot 45 in which is secured by means of pins 4:6 the upper end of a hin e member 47, the lower end d8 of which is bifurcated to inclose the bar 38 and apertured to receive the pivot bolt 40 so as to permit the back to be swung on the bolts 4-6 either in a position to rest upon the bar 38 or be elevated to a substantially upright position. The rear face of each of the uprights t1 slightly above its medial portion is provided with a recess 49 through which extends a pin 50 constituting a pivot for the upper end of a brace rod 51 having an ofi'set apertured head arranged to be freely seated in said recess and be pivoted on the pin 50. The brace red 51 is wedge-shaped and provided near its end with an aperture for a purpose to be later described; and it is also provided on its inner face with a groove 52 for a purpose to be later described. Cooperating with the brace rod 51 is a second brace rod 53 the upper end of which is wedge-shaped and provided with a longitudinally-extending slot 5% arranged in alinement with the aperture in the lower end of the upper brace rod 51. The upper end of the lower brace rod 53 is provided with an outwardly-extending stud 59 which is adapted to be received in the groove 52 and constitute a guiding member for the upper end of the lower brace rod 53. The lower brace rod 53 will be so positioned that be in lapping engagement with the inner face of the lower end of the upper brace rod- Extending through the apertures in the lower ends of the upper pair of brace rods'51 and also through the longitudinal slots-540i;

the lower pair of brace rods is a cross rod 55 having one end thereofthreaded and pro vided with a thumb nut 56 bearing against the outer face of the lower end of one of the upper rods 51 and with the opposite ,end of the cross rod provided with a head (not shown) bearing against the outer face of the companion upper brace rod 51. Surrounding the cross rod 55 and extendlng between the inner faces of the air pf lower brace rods 53 is a tube 57. t Wlll be apparent from this construction that when the thumb nut 56 is tightened it will simultaneously clam both cooperating bars of the upper and ower brace rods in contacting relation to prevent movement of the upper rods with revo respect to the lower rods and thereby hold the back of the chair fixedly 1n a determined position.

In order to render the manipulation of the back of the chair easier and to raise the same automatically when the thumb nut 56 is released, a spring 58 is provided, the lower end of which is secured in a suitable aperture near the under face of the rear portion of the seat 8 and the upper end of said spring is arranged to rest against the rear face of the central slat 44.

In setting up a chair such as has been ust described, the two supporting frames and 2 will preferably be brought into a posltion to cause their inner opposin faces to contact and are then secured toget er by the fastenin devices 7.

The combination with a -revolubly mounted and laterall -shiftable chair seat, of means for'fixedlyocking said seat in a desired osition, a lurality-of recesses in one of t e lateral e ges thereof, a projecting bar mounted in each of said recesses and extending laterall therefrom and provided near the outer en thereof with an a rture, a back mounted on said seat, a p urality of downwardly-extending members secured in the lower ends of said back each lapping one of said bars and pivoted thereto, a pair of upper brace rods pivotally-secured to the upper rear face of sa1d back, said brace rods provided with apertures near their lower ends and each further provided with a groove on. one of its medial faces, a pair of lower brace rods each pivotally-secured to one of the outer ends of one of said bars, said lower brace rods each provided with a longitudinally-extending slot arranged in alinement with the apertures in the lower ends of said upper air of brace rods and each furtherprovide with a projecting lug adapted to be received and travel in the groove in one of said upper brace rods, a cross rod extending through the. apertures in said up' er brace rods and the slots in said lower race rods, a tubular member surrounding said cross rod and interposed be tween the inner faces of said lower brace rods and means carried by said cross rod for simultaneously clamping all of said brace rods fixedly and detachably together whereby said back may be moved to a desired position and securely locked by said means.

A chair comprising a supporting frame, a chair seat pivotally-mounted on said frame, said chair seat provided near one lateral edge thereof with an opening communicat-' ing with a recess formed in the under face of said seat, an arm rovided with an upright member one end of which is adapted 'to be seated on the upper face of said chair seat, a hinge member held to said upright, a second'hinge member mounted in said recesscooperatlng with said first hinge memmember for detachably-holding said uprlght in position on the upper face of said chair'seat, a'trigger for releasing said locking'member to permit the lateral swinging of said arm and a back for said chair seat hinged thereto and provided with means for securely holding the same at a determined inclination with respect to said seat.

A chair comprising asupporting frame, a chair seat mounted on said frame provided near'one of the lateral edges thereof with a pair of spaced openings each of which commuinicates with a recess formed in the under face of said seat, a pair of binge members mounted in said recess, an arm embodying two upright members arranged to be posi tioned on the upper face of said seat, each of said arms provi ed with a hinge member arranged to coiiperate with one of the hinge members in said recess, a catch mounted on each of said arms arranged to project into each of said openings, a s ring-pressed common lock mounted in sai recess adapted to simultaneously engage each of said catches for lockin said arm in an upright position, substantia ly as described.

5., A chair comprising a supporting frame, a chair seat mounted on said frame provided near one of the lateral edges thereof with a pair of spaced openings each of which communicates witha recess formed in the under face of said seat, a pair of hinge memseams bers mounted in said recess, an arm embodying two upright members arranged to be positioned on the upper face of said seat, each of said arms provided with a bin e member arranged to coiiperete with one 0 the hinge members in said recess, a catch mounted on each of said arms arranged to project into each of said openings, a s ring-pressed common lock mounted in sai recess adapted to engage simultaneously each of said catches for locking said arm in an upright position and a trigger carried by said lock for actu ating the same, substantially as described.
