JOHN HOPE, OE PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HOPE OO.,-1OF SAME PLACE.
Lener; Patent No. 96,591, ma Nomea 9,1869.
IMPROVEBIIEIN'IIK'.I IN DIAMONDLHOLDERS FOR ENG-RAVING PRINTERS ROLLERS.
The Schedule referred to in 'these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN HOPE, of the city andl county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Diamond-Holders for Use in Machines for Engl-aw furnished, and forming a part of the same, is a true,-
clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the drawings.
Figure l represents, in plan view, one of my improved diamond-holders` A is the body of the, holder. Vhen placed in a machine, thc end marked A' is in communication with the lifting-device.
B and C are pivot-fulc-ra, upon' which the. holder is tilted or operated.
D is a longitudinal slot in the body of the holder, near its outer end.
E is the adjusting-weight, to which the diamondstem is attached.
The weight is accurately fitted to slide in the slot l' longitudinally, and may be secured at any desired point, by means of the thumb-screw F.
Figure 2 represents a holder in elevation view. Similar letters of reference are used to designate the various parts in all the figures. l
l G is the diamond-stem. The diamond is inserted in the lower end, in the usual well-known manner.
This stem is secured, by a set-screw, in a socket formed at the outer end of the weight E.
Figure 3 represents, in a cross-vertical section, the slotted end of the holder, the weight E, and diamondstem G.
It will be observed that the outer end of the holder is curved, longitudinally and vertically, in such a manner that the diamond-stem G, whether advanced or `receded, shall, as far as possible, point to the centre of the roll being engraved, thus rendering the engraved lines practically uniform, so far as relates to the natural cutting-eiect of the diamond.
Hcretofore, this curved and slotted end has been used with an adjustable diamond-stem; but as it was moved out from the fulcrum C, it became necessary to counterbalance it by means of adjustable weights, placed upon the inner end of the holder designated A.
My improvement is intended to, and does practically accomplish'the adjustment of both stem and vweight by a single operation.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with a curved and slotted diamondholder, the curved weight, fitted thereto, and connected with the diamond-stem G, substantially as shown and described.`
JOHN HOPE.
W'itnesses:
ORVILLE PECKHAM, EDWARD C. AMES.
