Application led June 1G, 1908. Serial No. 4%,766
To all whom it may concern:
lBe it known that lt, ANDREW lPRnNTIoE CRAIG, of the city of Toronto, in the county in the Provinceof Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal-Reinforced Boxes, of which the following is the speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in metal reinforced boxes, particularly adapted to contain cream of tartar, and other like commodities likely to be aected by contact with metal, and the object of the invention is to devise a box in which the contents may be ke t from contact with the metal under all circumstances and especially prevent the contents from being tam pered with previous to being sold, and it consists essentially of a box having a metal bottom covered with paper, a cardboard wall or cylindrical portion on which the bottom is iitted and held by the turned in upper end of the bottom, and in an inner paper top or label extending over the top of the cylindrical body and a screw ring designed to hold the paper top tight and secure it in position by means of indent-lires formed around the saine and projecting'into the cardboard top, the final closure being the ordinary screw top, the parts being otherwise constructed and arranged in detail as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1, is a perspective view ot a box showin the inner label or breakable top placed in position over the top edge of the box prior to being secured. Fig. 2, is a similar view showing the securing ring for the paper top. Fig. 3, is a view of the box complete with cover on. Fig. l, is a vertical section through the box.
ln the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each gure.
A is the niain bodyot the box which in the present instance is formed cylindrical, although it nia be formed in any other shape. The bo y is provided with a lining A extendin itromlt e top edge to the bottom ed e. f5? is the bottom, which is made of meta and is recessed being provided with a depending Harige B an an upwardly rejecting. rim B2 surrounding the Harige .v. The bottom B is struck out by a die and is provided with a lining B3, which extends down around theange B.
lThe bottom edge ot the body A is inserted in the annular recess between the flange B and rim B2 and the uppe'rv` edge lit of the rim is then turned inwardly as in dicated so as to hold the bottom in place.
C is an inner cover or label which is made ot light paper and is `placed over the top edge of The ring D is then placed over the inner cover C, so as to securely hold it in position, such ring being preferably a screw ring at the top and provided with indentures D around near the bottom edge, whereby it is securely held in position, 'such indentures being made by a suitable machine atter the ring is placed in position.
ln assembling the box li place the inner cover C and the ring in position first as shown in Fig. l, then the screw cap E. l then fill the` box or can from the bottom and put the bottom B in place as shown in Fig. 3.
lt will now be seen that the contentsot the box ane encompassed `on all sides by paper viz. the inner cover C, the lining A and the lining B3, and therefore, there is no liability of the contents becoming deteriorated by contact with the metal, which has been an objectionlpin this -class ot box as hereinbefore made. v
Not only does the inner cover C hereinbetore referred to, prevent deterioration, but also on this cover or .label may be printed any forni of guarantee desired, such guarantee-necessarily stating that if the inner cover or label is unbroken the contents are guaranteed pure or ,such like statement.
What l claim as my invention is:
l. ln a bon or package, the combination with the body portion made of paper or the like, of an end portion having an inner lining of paper' and suitably aiiixed to the bottom edge of the body portion and an 1nner cover ot paper extending over the top ed e of the box, and a securing ring provided `with a threaded or screw upper portion, and agscrew cap' fitting on such portion as and for the urpose specied.
2. rl`he combination with the body made the body A as indicated in lFig. 1.
ico
of paper or the like, of 'a metal bottom prothe top of the box and a screw ring provided vided with a depending flange and an up- With suitable indentures to fasten it and the 10 Wardl extending outer rim having the upinner cover in place as and for the purpose per e ge turned into the body, and a snitspecified.
able lining for the metal capbottoln having ANDREW PRENTICE CRAIG. the edge thereof extending between the VtnCSSeS: flanges and the body, and the inner cover P. W. BOYD,
having the edges thereof depending from R. CoBAIN.
