ANTIRATTLING DUST AND WEATHER GUARD FOR WINDOWS.

Of the very numerous devices sometimes used for weather proofing windows, and the like, none may be said to operate satisfactorily in all respects. In some, rubber coated fabric engaged to wooden strips are nailed to the blind stop against the sash. These, while serving the purpose for a short time, soon become practically useless owing to the rubber fabric becoming affected by the atmosphere thereby losing its resiliency and as a result, instead of engaging the sash posi tively, lies away from the same failing utterly in the object for which used; In many other constructions, metallic window guards have been employed. These usually are constructed of strips of metal engaged .upon the sliding sash and on the frame and 'coacting to afford a positive metallic contact face to face at all times. In these constructions the constant friction due to rais- [ing and lowering the window soon wears 1 away whatever anti-rusting coating may be provided on the strips, leaving the same free to rust and with the rusting and continuous wear due to friction, such devices have proven very short lived and soon fail to exclude either dust or wind and often prove exceedingly noisy.
The object of this invention is to provide a dust and weather guard adapted for use not only for windows but for all constructions in which one element slides upon another aflording a joint therebetween from which it is desired to exclude the passage of air and dust. 1
It is also an object of the invention to tween moving parts cannot readily occur. i
It is a further object of the invention to afford in a device of the class described a resilient packing adapted to be engaged in one of the elements to whichthe guard is to be afford a construction reducing friction to a minimum and in which metallic contact be applied and adapted to positivel and yield- 1n ly engage a complemental e ement slidab e therein and engaged to the other eleand when installed, not capable of beingjnjuriously affected by moisture and so to practically no deterioration from use.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and more fully pointed out and defined in the appended claims. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a part of a window frame and the upper and lower sliding sash therein. Fig. 2 1s a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. The width between the flanges of the channel E, is sufficiently greater than the thickness of the male flange (Z to insure the fabric lining the channel pressing upon said flange at all times, as shown in Fig. 2. The depth of the channel is, of course, sufficiently greater than the width of the flange 41 to avoid undue pressure on the fabric or felt lining, though insuring at all times suflicient pressure on the sides and inner edge of said flange from said fabric to afford an effective packing.
The construction illustrated in Fig. 5, comprises an angle bar F, formed of sheet metal, the edges f, of which are turned outwardly over a strip of fabric f, to enga e the same thereto and which longitudinal y of the bar at the center is left sufliciently full, as shown at 7, to receive therein a packing material f more or less resilient so that when the said angle bar-is engaged for instance, upon the lower inner horizontal angle of the upper sash, said packing bears against the outer face of the top rail of the lower sash.
The operation, from the construction described, is obvious. In installing, the antirattling dust and weather proofing device shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the side rails of the sash are first plowed at suitable distances from the faces thereof, which bear against the parting strip and the female member or lined channel E, is pressed therein. The seat for the arting strip on the outer side from the top downwardly to about the middle of the frame, is increased in width by any suitable tool if necessary to receive therein the flange d, of the 2 bar strip or male member, and in a similar manner the seat is increased on the inner side of the parting strip for the lower sash. Suitable lengths of each of said members having been each secured as before described, the
flange d holds the sash from rattling under any condition owing to the pressure of the felt or fabric on the sides thereof. Wind and dust are positively excluded and in any event. although not hermetically excluding the air, any particles of dust carried therewith are filtered out by the felt or fabric, thus under all conditions performing the function for which designed.
Of course, while I have described the device as applicable to windows, it may be used for other purposes, and, owing to its dust excluding qualities, and its prevention of the rattling of the sash, it is particularly applicable and important not only for windows generally but for car windows and numerous other purposes which are plainly evident from the construction.
Of course, details of construction and the method of securing the parts in place may be varied, and I therefore do not pur ose limiting this application for patent ot erwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a window the combination with the frame and the sliding sashes having grooves in the stiles thereof, of a sheet metal channel member secured in each groove, a lining of fabric in the channel providing parallel strips of fabric and an angle bar secured to the frame by one flange and having another flange extending between the strips of fabric.
2. In a window the combination with the frame and sliding sashes having longitudinal grooves in the stiles thereof, of a bar secured to the frame having an outwardly projecting flange, a metallic member secured in each groove in the stiles of the sashes and a lining in said metallic member bearin against opposite sides of the flange of said bar and slidable relatively thereof.
3. The combination with a frame and its parting strip of a sheet metal 2 bar enga ed at one flange in the seat for the parting strip and with the other flanges standing outwardly and at a distance from the parting strip, a sliding member in the-frame, a narrow sheet metal channel bar seated in the side of the sliding member in position to engage the projecting flange of the Z bar and a lining of felt permanently secured in the channel and pressing on both sides of said flange.
4. A device of the class described embracing a 2 bar of coated sheet metal and having one thick flange and one thin flange, the thick flange being formed by turnin the edge thereof over to afford double thic mess for the entire width and a female member complemental with said thick flan e embracing a strip of coated metal ro led to afford a narrow channel, a linin of fabric therein, the ed es of the flanges 0 said chan nels being rol ed inwardly to permanently engage the fabric, the width of said channel being such as to insure the fabric pressing at all times on the male flange.
5. A weather guard for windows comprising relatively movable interfitting metallic members and a fabric lining between said movable members.
6. A weather guard comprising relatively slidable metallic members and a strip of fabric secured to one of the members and engaging the sides of the movable member to exclude dust and moisture.
7. In a device of the class described the combination with a window and jamb of ametallic member secured to the jamb, a sliding metallic member secured to the stile of the window and interfitting the member secured to the j amb and a fabric lining secured to the sliding member and bearing against the sides of the other member.
8. A guard'for windows comprising slidable channel members secured to the stiles of the window sashes, members secured to the window j amb and engaging in the channel members and a fabric lining for provid- 2t ing a dust and moisture proof oint between the sliding joint of the members.
