cartrnn rnns mans.
Application filed April 8, 1910. Serial No. 554,188.
To all ar/m it may concern: Be it known that I, RALPH T mes, a subing at. New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented ccrtain new and useful Improvements in Car punters llancs 0f which the following a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to carpenters planes and the object thereof is to construct a tool of this class in such manner as to enahlc the plane to clear itself in use or oporation under varying conditions; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a carpcnters plane constructed as hereinafter described andclaimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following ecification, of which the accompanying t rawing forms a pa it, in which the separate parts of my improvement are dos-- ignated by suitable-reference characters in Figure 1 is a longitudinal central sectional view of a carpentefs plane made ac- 0It'llhg, to my invention, the section being taken on the linersen of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 a
Fig. 3 a detail view showing a part of the construction detached from the body of the plane, and showing a part in section; Fig". 4: a side view of another detail of. the-com structionj detached, and Fig. 5 a view similar to Fig. 4: but at right angles thereto.
in the drawin forming partof this specification l have s lOWIl at a an ordinary carpenters plane of the class specified, coin risis a recess a? which 0 ens downwardly through the bottom of sai bloclt to form the usual transverse, opening (i and the rear wall of the recess (1. is inclined downwardly and forwardly in the usual manner" and mounted therein is the usual cutting blade 7), the edge I) of which extends into and through the transverse aperture a", and the outer end portion 1) of said blade is providcd with a" longitudinal slot 72, and )laced on the top front surface of said blade is a ilate I), which is secured to and made adustable on the blade by means of a set screw '11 passed through the slot 6", and the plato I) is provided with a beveled edge 5 port-ion 71" of the blade b in the usual manner,
sion f". I
and the blade Z) and plate b are adjustable blade 0 so as to retaliate the dimensions of said aperture 1/ intront of the cutting edge of said blade. in order to enable the lane to clear itself when in use, and this b ook togather with the means employed for ad ust not it into ditl'crent 1 subject matter of this invontion.
The front end portion a of the block a is provided centrally thereof with a vertically arranged chan hcc (Z, which opens downwardly and secured in the ccntraltop surface of the block (v is a screw 0 having a. head if, to which is hingod abolt member 7", the connection between said bolt .member and the head a of the screws as shown at f, being such that said bolt member is free to swing forwardly and backwardly.
The upper end portion f of the bolt memher f is screw threaded as shown at f, and the lower end portion thereof is enlarged and'the opposite side portions thereof flattened asshown at f, and formed in the top part of the lower end portion of the bolt member-fie a transverse aperturef 'which ranges forwardly and backwa'rdly and is provided with a downwardly directed exten- The front end portion a of the block a is also provided centrally thereof with a forwardly and 'baclnvardly ranging bore o provided with a rear and extension of in the back wall of the chamber 17, and mounted in said bore is a forwardly and backwardly movable bolt g, the front end portion of which is screw threaded as shown atg and the rear end portion of which is enlarged as shown at r1 and the enlarged. part 9 of the" bolt g is cut away transversely to form a in theblock a and are held therein by a position constitutes the flat head g and transverse recesses g which form a flat neck a by which thehead g. is connected with-t e enlarged portion g of said bolt, and the side walls of the trans verse recesses 5/, in the form of construction shown, are beveled as shown at p The outer end portions of tie bolt 9 is provided with a thumb nut h, and the upper changes in and modifications of the conend portion of the bolt 7 is provided with a thumb nut b and in practice, in order to assemble the parts 0, f and g the bolt f is connected with the block 0 and passed upwardly throu h the chamber 03 until the aperture f in t e enlarged lower end portionof the bolt 7 registers with the bore a. The enlarged end portion g of the bolt 9 is then passed backwardly through the bore (1 and the head 9 of the part g of the bolt 9 passes through the aperture f, at which time the bolt f and block 0 are moved upwardly until said block 0 is firmly seated as fishown in Figs. 1 and 2, and in this operation the neck g of the enlarged part g of the bolt 9 passes downwardly into the downwardly directed extension f of the aperture {Kin the bolt f, and said bolts 7 and g are Qcked together, and by turning the nut h the block 0 may be moved forwardly or backwardly according to the direction in lich said nut isturned, and this operation, as will be understood, enlarges or diminishes the aperture a in front of the cutting edge b 'of t he blade 6 and said block 0 maybe locked inany desired position by means of a nut h It will be understood that the nut It must be loosened in order to adjust the block 0 as above described and when said block 0 has been adjusted in the desired position the struction described may be made, within the scope-of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv A carpenters plane comprising a main block, the top portion of which is provided with a recess which opens downwardly through the bottom surface of said block to form a transverse aperture, the front end portion of said main block being provided in the bottom thereof with a recess in which is mounted a supplemental block, and means for adjusting said supplemental block to ward and from said aperture consisting of a bolt having a hinge connection with the supplemental block and passing upwardly through the main block and provided at its upper end witha nut, another bolt movable forwardly and backwardly through a bore in the front end of the main block and adapted to be detachably and loosely connected with the first named bolt, said supplemental boltbeing provided at its outer end with a nut and said main block being provided with a chamber in which the lower end of the first named bolt is movable forwardly and backwardly.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this (3th day of April 1910.
RALPH TILLES.
