To all Iwhom it may concern:
Be it known that Lil/'Inman F. RICHARDS,
. a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the l'county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful lmprovelnent in Railway-Car Trucks, of
which the following is a specification.
'This invention relates to railway` car ytrucks of that sort in which the side frames have bolster openings permanently closed 'all around, and are constructed to allow the ordinary bolster having permanently at -itached column guides to be inserted end The inven-` parts so that only two short bolts` are required in cach side frame to firmly and securely retainthe bolster guide in place on theside frame, while at the same time these bolts will be largely relieved from strain'hy interlocking portions of the guide and side frameand cannot become disengaged from their holes lost.
ln the accompanying drawings, consisting` of two sheets: Figure l is a plan View, partly in section, in line l-l, lfig. 2, and partly' broken away, of a railway car truck holster and frame embodying the invention. llig. `ffi's a side elevation thereof. `lfig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse sectional elevation thereof. lT l is a half elevationrand half section ofthe spring plank and Athe bolster guide for Lone side frame. Fig. 5 is a frag mentary transverse sectional elevationof the trucklframe', omitting "the bolster, in line` 5-5, rig. a
like reference parts in the several figures;
rEach side frame preferably lconsists of a trussed frame or casting Awhich rests at its opposite ends on the journal bones, and a tie har o which is secured centrally to the de pressed central portion ofthe casting A with it. opposite ends extending beneath the journiil bones to which the ends of the casting it and tie har a are secured bv the usual vertil bolster.

a', a lower chord a2 having a depressed horif.
\ zontal central portion, and upright struts or bolster columns a3 which join the upper and lower "chords and form with them a bolster opening to .receive the end `of the truck Preferably the upper chord a is arched and of inverted lll-shape in cross-secM tion, while the columns a3 are of angle-shape infcross'section with the lateral flanges projecting outwardly at the inner or adjacent edges of the columns, and the lower chord is also of angle-shape with the exception of that portion o* thereofforming the bottoni edge of the bolster' opening, which is of channel-shape or has upper and lower outwardly projecting danges. This is a strong and desirable construction and is preferred from a manufacturing standpoint, `i
but the side frame could he of other construction'. f
'B represents the spring plank .or cross piece which connects the depressed tcentral' portions of the two side frames at the op`- posite sides of the truck, and C the truck holster which is arranged with its ends errtending through the bolster openings of the side frames and is yioldingly supported by springs D (indicated by broken lines) arranged in the holster openings of the side frames beneath theends of the bolster. rlhe spring plank B preferably consists of a channel bealnarranged with its flanges projecting upwardly. A hollow cast steel holster having integral vertical coluninfguides or lugs e at the opposite sides of its ends is shown, but the bolster may be ofiany ordinary construction,having column guides similarly arranged.
l E represent bolster guides which are secured to the opposite ends ofv the spring plank and fastened in the bolster openings of the side frames and embrace the ends ofi 'the `bolster between its column guides 7 whereby the holster ties the upper` portions of the side frames together' and is guided in lts vertical movements. Each guide has up--` right side pieces. which are joined at their14 lower ends by the spring plank butare dii-S'- connected at their 'upper ends so that the spring plank and guides form a sort of rack into which the bolster can, be loweredJfen v tically before the guides are secured in the 1 side frames. llheguides have horizontal hase portions e which'eatend beneath the preferably ends of the spring plank and rest upon the lower edges a4 of the bolster openings, The upright and base portions of the side pieces o the guide are riveted to the flanges and` wherebyl the lower ends 'of the guides are' retained in position in the side frames and the two side frames are connected by the spring lank. The upright side pieces of the guidb are referably of the same' width transversely of) the truck as the columns a of the side frame and bear against the inner or adjacent sides of the columns andare secured thereto by bolts f passing through holes inthe upper portions of the side pieces of the guide and the columns a3 in the direction of the length of the side frame. The bolt holes f in the side pieces of the guide are counter-sunk, see Fig. 4, to receive the heads of these bolts f, and when the bolster is in place it is always supported by the springsbetween the heads of the bolts, as shown in Fig. 2, so that it would be impossible for the bolts tobe disengaged from their -`holes should the nuts work off of the bolts. The side pieces oitl ther guide` are formed with lips g, Figs. l and 4, which tit in seats gf formed in the columns a at the inner side of the side frame. These lips g, bearing against the columns, relieve the bolts from strains incident to the endwise thrusts of the bolster. Each guide is preferably made in two separate parts each includin an upright side piece andl part of the bassie, as thereby the guide will closely fit the spring plank notwithstanding possible slight variations -in the dimensions of the spring plank and guides caused in making them, but each guide could, if desired, be made in a "single integral U-shaped casting. The lower portions of the upright side pieces of the guide are not subject to wear and are reduced in thickness, as shown, to reduce the weight of the guide. i
The bolster openings in the side frames are wider than the bolster measured over its column guides so that the bolster can enter the` openings endwise. In assembling the parts, the bolster is first lowered into place between the upright sides of the guides' efore the latter are placed in the side frames. The guides with the bolster in place therein are then slipped into lace in the bolster openings and secured y insertin the bolts f, after 'which the bolster is lifted and the springs placed in position beneath its end's. The guides are of slightly less height than the bolster openings to enable their lower ends to be interlocked with the bottom edges of the -bolster openings.
I claim as my invention:l
l. In a railway car truck, the combination of a bolster having side column guides, a side frame having a bolster opening which is closed at the top, bottom and sides and is of a width adapting the bolster withits column guides to be inserted endwise thereinto, a bolster guide which has uprightside pieces disconnected at one end whereby the bolster can be placed in the guide with the side pieces of the guide embracing the bolster in engagement with its column guides, said guide being at one side of' a width adapting it tobe :inserted laterally into said bolster opening and being formed at one end to interlock with the side frame, and means for securing the other end of the guide to theI side frame, substantially as set forth.
