To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID E. HUNTER, a citizen of the United States and resident of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Joints for Display-Cases or Similar Structures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to display cases and similar structures, and its principal object is to provide an improved dust-proof joint between the edge of a panel and the base of the case. In all sorts of display cases, and particularly in cases and cabinets used for museum purposes, it is highly important that all cracks and crevices be made as nearly as possible dust-proof. To that endI have invented the convenient and ef fective structure hereinafter fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings which illustrate certain embodiments of my inventi0n,-Figure 1 is a vertical cross section of one embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section of a modified form of the invention; and Fig. 3 is a plan View of the base of a cabinet and the modified form of holders shown in Fig. 2.

In all of the figures the invention is shown as applied to the base and one vertical panel of a cabinet or case suitable for use as a museum cabinet.

Referring first to Fig. 1, A represents the base of a cabinet or case; B a double channeled margin piece, H-shaped in cross section; and C a panel the edge of which engages and is held by the inner channel of said margin piece. The panel C may be secured to the margin piece in any suitable way, as for example, in the manner de scribed in my co-pending application filed February 2, 1909, Serial No. 417 5,548.

Projecting from the surface of the base A into the outer channel of the margin piece B is the holder a. One of the legs, 6, of the margin piece abuts against the base A, and the other leg, 5', is abbreviated, as shown, to leave a narrow space between it and the base.

D is a packing sheet resting on the base A and extending under and pressing closely against the shorter leg, I), and thence passing over the holder a. The packing sheet D may be made of felt, linoleum or any suitable material, and forms a dust-proof Specification of Letters Patent.

joint both between the surfaces of the holder at and the walls of the outer channel and between the end of leg Z) and the base. The holder (1 serves the double purpose of preventing any forward or backward movement of the panel on the base, and also of pressing the packing sheet against the walls of the channel, so as to exclude dust. The relative lengths of the legs 6 and b are such that the packing strip D is pressed closely between leg Z2 and the base, afitording a dust-proof joint also at that point.

Referring now to Fig. 2, all the parts thus far described are the same as in Fig. 1 excepting the holder 64. Instead of the rigid holder a, a resilient holder may be used, consisting of a leaf spring a secured at one end to the base at (E, and upturned at the other end as shown at a the upturned end a projecting within the channel of margin piece B. In order to provide a substantially flush top surface on the base A, a countersunk area A may be provided to accommodate the spring a of the holder. The spring a presses toward the leg 6, compressing between itself and the end of leg I) the packing strip D, thus insuring a dust-proof joint at that point. The packing strip may also pass upward and over the holder a as already described with reference to the holder at in Fig. 1, still further to insure the exclusion of dust. The spring a and holder (i may be made in one con tinuous strip extending throughout the length of the margin strip B, or it may be made in narrower sections arranged side by side as shown in Fig. 3, in which case each spring will operate independently and any inequality in the parts will not affect the tight closing of the joint between leg 6 and packing sheet D.

I claim:

1. The combination in a display case or similar structure, of a base, a panel provided at its edge with a margin piece channeled on its outer side, a holder on said base extending into said margin piece channel, and a packing sheet on said base extending under and closely against one leg of said channeled margin piece and over the holder within the channel.

on its outer side, means to hold said margin piece in position on the base, and a compressible packing sheet on said base extending under and closely against one leg of said channeled margin piece, the other leg of said channeled margin piece abutting against the base.

3. The combination in a display case or similar structure, of a base, a panel provided at its edge with a margin piece channeled on its outer side, a resilient holder secured to the base and extending into the margin piece channel, and a packing sheet overlying said base and extending under one leg of said channeled margin piece between said leg and said holder.

The combination in a display case or similar structure, of a base, a panel provided at its edge with a margin piece channeled on its outer side, a packing sheet overlying the base and extending under one leg of the channeled margin piece, and means mounted upon the base to press said packing sheet yieldingly against the last named leg of the channeled margin piece.

The combination in a display case or similar structure, of a base, a panel provided at its edge with a margin piece channeled on its outer side, a packing sheet overlying the base and extending under one leg of the channeled margin piece, and a leaf spring mounted on said base and extending under one leg of the channeled margin piece, adapted yieldingly to press said packing strip against the last named leg of the channeled margin piece.

The combination in a display case 01' similar structure, of a base, a panel provided at its edge with a margin piece channeled on its outer side, and a resilient holder consisting of a leaf spring secured near one end to the base extending under and pressing against one leg of the channeled margin piece and upturned at the other end, the upturned end projecting into the margin piece channel.

7. The combination in a display case or similar structure, of abase, a panel provided at its edge with a margin piece channeled on its outer edge, a resilient holder consisting of a leaf spring secured near one end to the base extending under and pressing against one leg of the channeled margin piece and upturned at the other end, the upturned end projecting into the margin piece channel, and a packing sheet overlying said base and leaf spring and extending under one leg of the channeled margin piece.

8. The combination in'a display case or similar structure, of a base, a panel provided at its edge with a margin piece channeled on its outer side, one leg of said channeled side abbreviated, and a packing sheet on said base extending under and closely against packing sheet on saidbase extending under and closely against one leg of the other channel of the margin piece.

10. The combination in a display case or similar structure, of a base, a panel provided at its edge with a margin piece channeled on its outer side, a packing sheet overlying the base and extending under one leg of the channeled margin piece, and a plurality of spring actuated devices mounted on said base, adapted to press said packing sheet yieldingly against the lastnamed leg of the channeled margin piece.

11. The combination in a display case or similar structure, of a base, a panel provided at its edge with a margin piece channeled on its outer side, a oacking sheet overlying the base and extending under one leg of the channeled margin piece, and a plurality of leaf springs mounted side by side on said base, adapted to press said packing sheet yieldingly against the last named leg of the channeled margin piece.

12. The combination in a display case or similar structure, of a base, a panel provided at its edge with a margin piece channeled on its outer side, a holder on said base extending into said margin piece channel, and a compressible packing strip between said holder and the inner walls of said channel, the outer leg of said channeled margin piece abutting against said base.

13. The combination in a display case or similar structure, of a base, a panel provided at its edge with a margin piece channeled on its outer side, a holder movablymountedon said base extending intosaid margin piece channel, a spring normally urging said holder into said channel, and a compressible packing strip between said holder and the inner walls of said channel,the outer leg of said channeled margin piece abutting against said base.

The combination in a display case or similar structure, of a base, a panel provided at its edge with a margin piece channeled on its outer side, means to hold said margin piece in position on the base, and a coinpressible packing sheet on said base extending under and closely against one leg at least of said channeled margin piece.
