Be it known that I, Jnssn G. VINCENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and Stateof Michigan, have invented certain, new and of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide improved means in an adding machine for automatically characterizing totals and sub-totals, as distinguished from other amounts printed in a list, designating numbers'as distinguished ,from added amounts, and the first amount in a list of added amounts, as distinguished from subsequent amounts in .the'same list. It will be understood that means for carrying out this ob- -ject will be embodied in an adding machine equipped for printing lists of amounts and accumulating the total thereof and printing with or withou'tleaving the machine clear and also equip ed for printing a number while mulation.
In the present instance the invention is shown and described as embodied in a well known type of adding machine, to-wit, the Burroughs machine of the general character disclosed in Patents Nos. 504963 and 505,078, issued September 12, 1893,.but it isto be understood that the invention is not restricted to employment in connection with this particular type of adding machine, but may be adapted to other types.

Referring first to Fig. 1 ofthe above'described drawings, the numeral 600 designates a rock shaft located about centrally of the machine and upon which a series of levers 611 are loosely mounted, said levers carrying at their forward ends segmental racks 610 and at their rear ends segmental series of type plates 618, as in the usual Burroughs machine. Reference numeral 900 designates another lower front part of the machine, this rock shaft having secured to it the frame in which the adding or accumulating wheels are mounted. Reference numeral 910 designates one side plate of said frame and 916 designates one of the pinions which constitute accumulating wheels ordinarily carrying numbered disks for indicating pur-' poses. The reference numeral 613 designates a frame or bail secured to the rock shaft 600 and normally upholding the forward arms of the levers'611.but retreating in every operation of the machine so as to permit said levers to fall. Latches 415 normally engage theracks 610 to uphold them, but are severally displaced by depression of amount keys and collectively displacedby depression of total or subtotal keys. The amount keys are designated 291 and arranged as usual in parallel rows, the
" keys of each row codperating with a sliding strip 214 engaged withone of the latches 415. The pinions 916 are normally engaged with the racks 610 but at the outset of an operation of the machine when an amount is to be accumulated said pinions are moved out of mesh' with said racks. The latter frock shaft at the' descend distances determined by stops which the depressed amount keys project into the paths of shoulders on the racks. Thereafter thepinions return to engagement with the racks so as to be turned thereby when the racks are restored to normal by the frame 613. (hen the forward arms of the levers (S11 drop thefrearward arms of these levers of course rise and thus the amount represented by the depressed keys is set up in typ'e'confronting a roller platen 17.

If, on the other hand, the accumulation is to be preserved the pinions are kept in mesh with the racks during the restoration of the latter to normal. The engagement between pinions and racks is controlled by the rocking of the frame in which the pinions are mounted and therocking of this frame is effected through the medium of the familiar pitman 914 branched at its forward end to alternately engage studs a and b on the plate 910 above and below the rock shaft 900.
.The upper branch of the pitman is notched to a rock shaft 800 which is oscillated in,
every operation of-the machine. This rock arm carries the usual wipe plate or pawl 821 cooperating with the studs 1: and (Z. The forward end of the pitman is normally upheld as usual through the medium of a link 911 slotted at its upper end to embrace a screw stud e on a bell crank lever 227 pivoted just under the keyboard and drawn forward by a comparatively strong spring f. An upstanding arm of said bell crank 227 is surmounted by a key button 293 which is ordinarily termed theitotal key. The depression of this key against the stress of the spring f permits the forward end of the pitman 914 to drop so that the hook of the pitman comes to rest upon the stud b, (Fig. 6) the screw stud c then moving to the lower end of the slot of the link 911-. Of course, this lowering of the pitman breaks the connection between it and the accumulating frame above the rock shaft 900,
so that the forward thrust of the pitman does not effect disengagement of the pinions and racks. The result of this forward thrust of the pitman is to carry the hookbf the pitman off the top of the stud 7), (dotted lines Fig. 6) whereupon said hook drops over the front side of the stud. Then, when the pitman moves rear-wardly, the accumulator frame is rocked to disengage the pinions from the racks. This is the ordinary totaling operation in a Burroughs adding machine. It is customary in such machine when a so called sub-total is desired, to release the key 293 inthe middle of an operation of the machine so as to cause the book of the pitman to be lifted above the stud I) priorito the rearward movement of the pit- ,man, thus preventing the pinions from being moved out of engagement with the racks. In the construction here shown and described the so called sub-total is not taken in this way, but an additional key is employed, the depression of which causes depression of the key 293, but prevents the drop of the pitman 914 otherwise permitted by the slot in link 911.
- Referring to the sub-total means just mentioned the reference letter S designates a. key in rear of the key 293 and surmounting an upstanding arm .of a bell crank lever S loosely mounted on the rock shaft 202 and connected with a forwardly extending link S having a lug s which engages the front side of astud s on the depending arm of the bell crank 227. It will be seen that through the action of this lug s on the stud s depression of the key S will result in depression of the key 293. In order to prevent the independent downward movement of the link 911 and the pitman 914, the link S is extended past said link 911 and formed with a raised portion 8 adapted when the link S is drawn rearwardly to take up a position below a stud s on said link 911, thus blocking the descent of the latter, as illustrated in Fig. 7
It is desirable to lock the sub-total key againstdepression when the total key has been operated and therefore means are provided for preventing rearward movement of thelink S so long as the total key is depressed. To this end, the link S is formed with an angular or L-sh'aped slot s forwardly beyond the shoulder s which slot embraces a fixed stud s on the framework of the machine. The link-S is normally upeeaaee wall of the horizontal branch of the slot 8 will have moved over the stud s before the link is free to lower. This can beprovid'ed for by allowing lost motion between the lug s and the stud s.
It will be seen that the above described construction provides for the performance by the machinebf addition, at the same time printingthe several amounts added, also the printing of thetotal of such amounts v while restoring or preserving the accumulation, also the printing of such total, leaving the machine clear, 2'. 6., the printing of a subtotal, the latter without requiring manipulation of any key at an intermediate stage in an operation of the machine.
In the uses to which the present-day adding machine is put occasion frequently arises for printing a number, not an amount to be added, but merely a designating number, such for example as one indicating the identity of the particular person operating the machine. In a machine having the construction described the exclusion of such number from the accumulation may be accomplished by preventing effective engage" ment of the wipe plate or pawl 821 wlth the rear stud (Z of the lever 918. It will be recalled that in an adding operation the accumulatorpinions 916 are disengaged from the racks 61:0 before the latter move downward. This is effected through the action of said wipe pawl upon the forward stud 0. It is obvious that if said wipe pawl fails to act upon the rear stud d the pinions will remain disengaged from the racks during the return of the latter to normal. For the purpose of disabling said wipe pawl in this connection,.a key E (Fig. A) is located at the top of the keyboard, said key having a stem E sliding through the top plates of the machine and guided at its lower end by a stud 3 which engages a slot in said stem. The lower extremity of the latter is rounded off on the front side and when the key is I depressed the rounded edge stands in the path of the wipe pawl 821, so that as the rock arm 813 nears the end of its rearward -sw1ng, said wipe pawl will encounter said curved edge and be deflected, as illustrated in Fig. 5. The result is that when the rock arm swings forward the wipe pawl passes below the stud (Z without acting upon the same. The key E is normally elevated by a spring (2 and when depressed is temporarily detained against the stress of said spring by a detent pawl e pivoted below the upper part of the keyboard and pressed against the key stem by a spring 6 Fig. 4, so as to en a e a notch e in said stem when. the
latter reaches its lowest posit-ion. Said de tent has a rearwardly projecting arm 6 with an upturned extremity for co-action with -the cross rod 200 of the usual key-releasing bail. The left side arm 219 of the latter is, as usual, connected by a link 226, with the depending arm of the total key bell crank lever 227, so that depression of either the total or sub-total key-Will release any depressed amount keys and will also release the key E, should that happen to have been depressed. The usual means will be em ployed for automatically operating said bail at the close of an operation of the machine.
In order to lock key E, which is ordinarily termed the elimination key, during the operation of the machine either in depressed or elevated position there is jointed to-one side bar of the restoring frame 613, Fig. 5, a lock plate IE guided in its movements by a cross rod E which occupies a bifurcation of said plate. The latter is formed on its front side with a flaring notch or openingc adapted when the elimination key is depressed to embrace a lug e on the inner side of the key stem E as illustrated in dotted lines, Fig. 5. When the key stem is elevated the said plate passes 'below the lug and prevents depression of the key during an operation of the machine. Normally, the plate E of course, stands in rear of said lug 6 so as not to ob struct the key stem (Fig. 1). Passingv to the mechanism employed for "eftecting the printing, the type plates 618 are as usual mounted to have a slight sliding movement upon the levers 611 and the usual hammers 715 are employed to strike the rear ends of the type plates and. drive them with percussive force against the paper overlying the platen 17. These hammers are as usual pivoted at their lower ends and formed with cam slots engaged by roller studs on levers 716, the latter connected by springs 7 80 with pawls 718. These springs constitute the means for eiiecting the percussive stroke of the hammers and they also serve to enforce engagement between said pawls and the series of pivoted latches 717 which normally engage the upper ends ofthe levers 716 to restrain them. The pawls 718 are asusual carried by a bail which swings back and forth inevery operation ofthe machine and these pawls are formed .with upturned tails co-acting with inclined shoulders of the levers 611, whereby any pawl in the train of mechanism controlled by a bank or row of keys in which none has been depressed will, with the forward swing of the bail, be thrown out of position for acting upon the latch. Notwithstanding this disablement, the latch may be displaced through coiiperation with the next latch to the left, for the' latches are provided with overlapping tails as usual, this bemg a familiar expedient for securing the printing of ciphers in decimal places where no digits occur. The hammers are retracted by a bail 712 which is reciprocated in each operation of the machine in the usual manner.
The printing of special characters for designating the totals, unadded numbers, and
J purpose which will hereinafter become apciall y formed parent, the special printing hammer is under control of the other hammers, the right hand one of the latter which may be termed the units hammer, being formed with a notch g, Fig. l, engaged by a pin or stud g on the special printing hammer. It should also be noted that the latch for restraining the special printing hammer is not overlapped by a tail of the adjacent or units latch.
The above mentioned special printing hammer acts upon one or the other of a pair of special type plates F F (Fig. 2) which are mounted to slide upon a carrier in the form of an arm F loosely mounted on the,
shaft 600 alongside the units lever 611. The
said,arm F is drawn upward by a spring h,
but is normally held depressed by reason of the engagement of a finger F under a laterally turned end portion of an extension F of said arm on the forward side of the shaft 600. Said finger-F is secured to this shaft, which oscillates in each operation of the machine. Therefore, when the machine is operated the finger withdraws, leaving the arm F free to rise in the absence of other obstructions. The plate F carries two type, the upper one for designating the first amount of an added list and the lower one for. designating an unadded number. The upper type may consist of the letter 0 and the lower type of the ordinary number sign, as indicated in several figures of the drawings. The type plate F carries. a single type for designating a total or subtotal, this type consisting for example, of a star or asterisk. Normally, the type carrier F? is in the lowered position illustrated in Fig. 3, where no one of the above described three type is in position to print.
'lhe-three.hl'ifierent positions which the type carrier F must assume in order to present its type at the printing line are determined by the coiheration between a speortlon of the upper edge of the carrier and anarm G which is secured to the rock shaft. 202. This arm has a laterally projecting finger G extending over the-type carrier and the latter is irregularly notched for coiheration with said finger. Thus it is formed with a step z', a lower step 1' somewhat more extensive than the step 2',
then a notch whose bottom is somewhat" lower than the step and finally with a substantially V-shaped notch m of about the same depth as the notch 70, but yet permittin'g greater movement of the type carrier, because further. removed from the latters pivot than the notch 71: When the finger G is positioned "for engagement with said notch m (Fig. 6) the type carrier F moves upward until the total type comes to the printing line. /Vhen 'said finger is in position to engage the notch 70 (Fig. 4) the type carrier rises a less distance and the number sign type is brought to the printing line. When the finger is positioned for engagement with the step j (Fig. 2) the special type carrier rises only far enough to present the clear type. The abutment of the shoulder 2'- against said finger (Fig. 3) prevents the type carrier from leaving its non-printing position, when the finger F retreats. 1 Means for controlling the armGwill next be described. Near the left hand end of the rock shaft 202, there is secured upon it a bell crank lever H, the depending arm of which is connected by a spring H with a stud on an upstanding portion of the link 226, as shown in Fig. 1. Said spring thus tends to swing the bell crank H forward and consequently bring the arm G to its foremost position engaging the high shoul der'z', as shown in Fig. 3. 1 The depending arm of the bell crank H carries a stud n,
and an upstandin projection 12. of the link 226 is located in front of said stud. \Vhenever either the total or the sub-total key'is depressed the resultant thrust of the link 226 rearward causes said upstanding projection of to act upon said stud a and thereby swin the stop arm G to its extreme rearward position, where its finger G will be located for coopcrationwith the notch m, as illustrated. in Fig. 6. Thus, when in an operation of the machine for taking a total the finger F 3 retreats the type-carrying arm will rise to the position where it presents at the printing line the type for designating a total or sub-total.
The location of the stop finger G for determining the number sign printing posi tion of the special type carrier is brought about as follows: The depending arm of the bell crank'llhas on its inner side a roller stud 0 just in rear of the elimination key stein E and the latter is formed with a raised cam portion 0 which, when the key is depressed acts upon said stud and thereby swings the bell crafik and the sto arm G rearwardly, ositioning the stop over the note In, as shown in Fig. 4.
It will be understood that, after there has been a' clearing operation of the machine, the stop finger Gr should, in the next ensuing adding operation, be located over the shoulder j of the special type carrier. The

control of the stop arm, to this end, is brought about through the following described means. The forwardly extending arm of the bell crank H is formed with an through the medium of a bell crank lever p whose forward arm overlies the stud s on the link 911 (Fig. 6) and whose upwardly projecting arm extends in rear of a on a downturned lip of the plate P. A comparatively strong spring 72 connects the said upstanding armof the bell crank lever P with a post 7) depending from the under topplate of the machine and when free to act, this spring serves to draw the plate P to its foremost posit-ion. The extent of movement of the bell crank lever P in so acting is controlled by the studs and unless the link911 moves downward far enough for a clearing operation of the machine the bell crank P cannot draw the plate P far enough forward to present an abutment tothe shoulder 79 of the bell crank levenH. Consequently the printing llne',
depression of the sub-totallkey will not have the effect of leaving the stop arm G in position to be abutted by the shoulder j of the special type carrier in the next ensuing adding operation When the two slots and p are in register then the shoulders p may pass into the slot p as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, permitting the stop arm G to swing to its foremost position where, as illustrated in Fig. 8, it pre-. vents the special type carrier from leaving its non-printing position.
Now it Will be understood that a clearing operation having resulted in drawing the apertured plate P forward andthereby presenting an abutment to the bell crank H which results in positioning the special type carrier to present its t clear type at the the said type carrier must be held out of printing position during ensuing adding operations. To this end, means are provided for causing a rearward shift of the apertured plate P as an incident to an operation of the machine which prints the first of a list of added items or amounts, the slots p and p being thus brought into alinement so that the stop finger Gr may move to position over the hi h step 2" of the type carrier arm F The p ate P is drawn rearwardly by a spring 9 connecting its rear end with a fixed post, though the spring 72"" is necessarilysuperior to said spring g. However,

the spring f being 0 course superior to the spring 10 and so said spring p is not then acting in opposition to the spring 9. This condition is illustrated in Fig. 1. However, with the parts adjusted as there shown the plate is latched in its forward position. A downturned lip or flange 1' of the plate carries a stud 7' which is engaged by the shoulder of a latch arm R pivoted just below the keyboard and drawn upward by a spring 1" connecting a depending arm R of the lath with a fixed post. The said depending arm R of the latch carries a roller stud r arranged to act against'a depending flange 1 of the plate P so that when the latch is disengaged from the stud rit will act to thrust rearwardly the unlatched slide plate. it has been before stated that the spring g tends to draw said plate rearwardly, but the tension of said spring is not sufficient to overcome-the friction between the shoulder,
p of the bell crank H and the underside of the plate. When that friction has been eliminated through rearward movement of the plate by the latch arm R then this spring 9 operates to move -the plate farther back, thus insuring a free passage for the upstanding portion p of the bell crank H I through the slot 10 x It will be understood that the unlatching of the slide plate and the rearward movement of the latter is to take place in an adding operation of the machine first ensuing,
after a clearing operation, but of course the mere depression of amount keys should not bring about the release of the plate because that act may not be followed by an operation of the machine and furthermore the opera tion of the machine following depression of amount keys may be one in which a designating number is to be printed and no addition performed. For these reasons, depression of amount keys merely has the effect of moving a latch-operating member so that if the operation is an adding one this member will .be acted upon so as to withdraw the latch from effective position. However, the depression of the elimination key will have such an effect upon the connections between this member and the amount keys as to prevent actuation of said member in the ensuing operation of the machine. The member in question takes the :form of a pltman Q pivoted to the latch and carrying at its lower end a roller stud 8 designed to be acted upon by a finger u secured to the rock shaft 600. The amount-key detent strips 214 cooperate as usual with a bail 424 moving the latter rearward whenever any amount key is depressed. The left hand side of this bail is connected by an irregular-shaped link Q with the pitman Q and with the stem of the formed at its rear end with a straight longitudmal slot 16 embracmg a stud u on said elimination key stem which mode of 'connec tion permits the necessary backward and forward thrust of said link. The latter in its oblique and widened middle portion is formed with an angular slot a embracing a stud u on the )itman Q. Normally as shown in Fig. 1, ti substantially vertical portion of said angu-. lar slot, though at the upper end of such portion of the slot. Consequently, when the bail 424 is swung rearwardly the pitman Q will be swung rearwardly through the medium of the link Q, and the stud u will be brought into the path of the finger w, on the shaft 00 (dotted lines Fig. The result is that in the ensuing operation of the machine the said pitman will be drawn downwardly and the latch disengaged from the plate and the latter thrust rearvardly by the arm R of the latch and disengaged from the shoulder of the bell crank ll, whereupon the spring 9 will move the slide plate farther back. It will be remembered that in this operation of the machine the stop finger. G was at the outset positioned over the elongated step j of the type-carrier arm. Beforethe pitman Q is operated in the manner just described the type carrierv arm will have swung upwardly and its said elongated step will have come in contact with the finger G The clear special character will therefore be printed in association with the amount. It is the rear portion of the elongated step which then abuts the-stop finger, as will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. 1. When the finger n acts on the pitman Q, and the slide late is moved rearward said stop finger a vances to the forward part of said elongated step,

Then when the special type carrier is carried down by the action of the finger F against the forward extension F of the type carrier, said'stop finger will move to position above the high step t, asshown in Fig. 3, this being effected by'the spring H Therefore, as further amounts are added to the accumulation, there will be no special character-printin as the special type carrier is held out o printing position.
When a designating number is to be printed without accumulation the above described operation should not take place because if it did then when the adding commenced the first amount would not be characterized to indicate clear Therefore,the
depression of the elimination key prevents any co-action between the pit-man Q and its operating finger it. Thus, depression of the elimination key lowers the link Q to the full-line position shown in Fig. 5, thereby cumming the pitman Q forward through coie said stud u is in the" operation of the up er inclined portion of the angular slot u with the stud u.
when amount keys are depressed and the link Q thrust rearwardly the pitman stud will not be brought into the path of the actuating finger M, and so the plate 1 will not be unlatched.
()f course, there should be no printing of special characters in blank operations of the machine and consequently the special printing hammer is only permitted to act when the adjacent units hammer acts. The interlock between these two hammers has before been mentioned as comprising a notch g and a stud shown in Fig. 1. It will, of course, be understood that in the printing of any item, whether representing an added amount, a'total, or a designating number, the units hammer will necessarily operate and release.

blank ope'ations of the machine, evenlhough the total, subtotal or elimination key be depressed, there will be no special character printing, the units-hammer being restrained by its latch and the special ham mer by the units hammer. It has before been stated that there is no coiiperative ac tion between the units latch and the special latch such as exists between the regular latches for cipher printing purposes. I f so, the special printing hammer would be constantly delivering blows with the special type carrier out of printing position. So far as individual actuation of the special latch by pawl 718 is concerned, that is prevented when the special type carrier is out of position, in the same manner that actuation of the regular latches is prevented. V 1 lhus the special pawl has an upturned tail which co-acts with an inclined shoulder a: on the underside of the type carrier arm.
The above described construction is well adapted for carrying out the object primarily stated, but it is to be understood that said construction is susceptible of considerable modification without departing from the scope of the invention;

In a machine-of the character described, the combination of adding and listing mechanisms with provisions for printing without adding controlling connections designed to ettect a clearing operation;-a special type ('arricr normally withdrawn from printing position and having a type for characterizing an unadded number and a type for characterizing the first of a list of added amounts, a stop piece for limiting the advance of said type carrier, means coming into play in the clearing operation to shift the stop piece and permit the type carrier to advance beyond the position for printing to characterize the first added amount, withprovisions for limiting the return of said stop piece and thus positioning it to limit the advance of the type carrier in an adding operation of the machine first ensuing after a clearing operation and thereby position the type carrier for characterizing the first of a list of added amounts, means controlled by the adding mechanism for thenfreeing the stop piece and permitting it to return to normal for detaining the type carrier out of printing position, and means cominginto play in a non-adding operation to shift the stop piece and permit the type carrier to advance beyond the first-itemcharacterizing position to a position for presenting the type which characterizes an unadded item, with provisions for disabling the said stop-piece freeing means when a number is'.printed without being added.
8. In a machine of the character described, the combination of adding and listing mechanisms with provisions for printing without adding; controlling connections designed to effect a clearing and total printing operation; a special type-carrier normally withdrawn from printmg position and having a type for characterizing an ,nna-dded number, a type for characterizing a total and a type for characterizing the first of a list of added amounts; a stop piece for limiting the advance of said type carrier; means coming into play in the clearing and total printingo operation to shift the stop piece and permit the type carrier to advance beyond a position for presenting at-the printing line the first-item-characterizing type and to a posi tion for presenting-the total-characterizing type, with provisions for limiting the return of the stop piece-and thus positioning it to limit the advance of the type carrier causing the latter to present its first-item-characterizing type in an adding operation first eneeaaaa suing after a clearing and total-printing operation, and-means coming into play in a non-adding operation toshift the stop piece and permit the type carrier to advance beyond the first-item-characterizing position to a position for presenting the type which characterizes an unadded item.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of adding and listing mechanisms with provisions for printing without adding; controlling connections designed to effect a clearing and total printing operation; a special type-carrier normally withdrawn from printing position and having a type for characterizing an unadded number, a type for characterizing a total and a type for characterizing the first of a list of added amounts; a stop piece for limiting the advance of said type carrier; -means coming into play in the clearing and totalprinting operation to shift the stop piece and permit the type carrier to advance beyond a position for presenting at the printing line the first-item-characterizing type and to a position for presenting the total-characterizing type, with provisions for lim' in the return of the stop piece andithus p sitloning it to limit the advance of the type carrier causing the lafiter to present its first-itom-characterizing type in an adding operation first ensuing after a clearing and total-printing operation, means controlled by the adding mechanism, for their freeing the stop piece and permitting itto return to uoruml for de- ,taining the type carrier out of printing position, with provisions for disabling the said stop-piece freeing means when a number is printed without being added, and means coming into play in a non-adding operation to shift the stop piece and permit. the type carrier to advance beyond the first-itemcharaeterizing position to .a position for presenting the'type which characterizes an unadded item.

In a machine of the 'characterdescribed, the combination of adding and listing mechanisms with provisions for printing without adding; controllingconnections designed to effect a clearing and total printing operation, with rovisions for printing a total without clearing; a special type-carrier normally withdrawn from printing position and having a type for characterizing ing a total and a type for characterizingthe first of a list of added amounts; a stop piece for limiting the advance of said type carand total printing operation to shift the stop piece and permit the type carrier to advance beyond a position for presenting at the prlnting line the first-item-characterizing type and to a position for presenting the total-characterizing type, with provisions for limiting the returnof the stop piece and rier; means coming into play in the clearing an unadded number, a type for charactcrizi thus positioning it to limit the advance of the type carrier causing the latter to present its first-iten'i-characterizing type in an adding operation first ensuing after a clearing and totalprinting operation, means controlled by the adding mechanism. for then freeing the stop' piece and permitting it to return to normal for detaining the type car rier out of printing position, with provisions tor preserving the latter adjustment in the printing of a total without clearing, and means coming into play in a non-adding operation to shift the stop piece and permit the type carrier to advance beyond the firstitem-characterizing position to a position for presenting the type which characterizes an unadded item, with provisions for disabling the said stop-piece freeing means when a number is printed without being added.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of an accumulator; a pivoted support therefor; reciprocating aceumu]ator-actuators and type carriers; a pitman designed to engage the accumulator support alternately on opposite sides of the latter pivot; a key normally holding the pitman engaged with said support on one side of the latter pivot, said key when operated permitting the disengagement of said pit man from said support inthat side of the latters pivot and in thesubsequent operation of the machine permitting the engagement of said pitman with said support in the opposite side of the latters pivot; a second key arranged to operate the first key to so disengage the pitman on the one side of the pivot of the accumulator support but adapted to prevent engagement of the pitman with said support on the opposite side of the latters pivot; a special type carrier normally out of printing position and having a type for characterizing the first of a list of added items; and means under control of said two keys for bringing said special type carrier to printing position.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of an accumulator; a pivoted support therefor; reciprocating accumulator-actuators and type carriers; a pitman designed to engage the accumulator support alternately on opposite sides of the latters pivot; a key normally holding the pitman engaged with said support on one side of the latters pivot, said key when operated permitting the disengagement of said pitman from said support on that side of the latters pivot and in -the subsequent operation of the machine permitting the engagement of said pitman with said support on the opposite side of the latters pivot a second key arranged to operate the first key to so disengage the pitman on the one side of the pivot of the accumulator support but adapted to prevent engagement of the pitman With said support on the opposite side of the latters pivot; a special type-carrier normally out of printing position and having atype for characterizin a total and a type for characterizing the first of a list of added items; and means under control of said two keys for bringing said special type carrier to its dill'erent )rmting positions.

In' a machine ot the character described, the combination of-an accumulator; a pivoted support therefor; reciprocating accumulator-actuators and type carriers; a pitman designed to engage the accumulator support alternately on opposite sides of the latters pivot; a key normally holding the pitman engaged with said support on one side of the latters pivot, said key when operated permitting the disengagement of said pitman from said support on that side of the latters pivot and in the subsequent operation of the machine permitting the engagement of said pitman with said support on the opposite side of the latters pivot; a second key arranged to operate the first key to so disengage the pitman on the one side of the pivot of the accumulator support but adapted to prevent engagement of the pitman With said support on the opposite side of the latters pivot; a special type-carrier normally out of printing position and having a type for characterizing a total and a type for characterizing the first of a list of added items; a stop piece to determine different printing positions of said special type carrier and movable by the said keys to position for permitting said special type carrier to present its total designating type; and means to adjusting said stop piece to determine the first-item printing position of the special type-carrier, said means under control of the before-mentioned pitman and efiective only when the latter is permitted, through operation of the first-mentioned key, to engage the accumulator support on the side of its pivot opposite that where said pitman normally engages said support.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of an accumulator; a pivoted support therefor; reciprocating accumulator-actuators and type carriers; setting-up devices therefor; a pitman designed to engage. the accumulator support alternately on opposite sides of the latters pivot; a key normally holding the pitman engaged with said support on one side of the latters pivot, said key when operated permitting the disengagement of said pitman from said support on that side of the latters pivot and in the subsequent operation of the. machine permitting the engagement of said pitman with said support on the opposite side ot the latter s pivot; a second key arranged to operate the first key to so disengage the pitman on the one side of the pivot of the accumulator support but adapted to prevent engagement of the pit- La a pivoted support therefor; reciprocating,

a special type-carrier associated with the printing mechanism and designed to characterize the first of a list of added amounts, a stop piece cooperating with said type-carrier and said slide to hold the former in printing position when the slide is latched,
universal bail operated thereby, a link connected to said bail, a pitman engaged with said link, a reciprocating member to actuate the pitman, a latch to which the latter is eonnected,'an abutment slide held in effective position by said latch and adapted to be moved out of efl'ective position by a branch of said latch when the latter releases the slide, adding and printing mechanisms under control of said keys, a special type-carrier associated with the printing mechanism and designed to characterize the first of a list of added amounts, a stop-piece cooperating with said type-carrier and said slide to hold the former in printing posit-ion when the slideis latched, and means for effecting a clearing operation and thereby moving the ,slide to effective position, the next ensu- 9 ing adding operation unlatching the slide;

In a machine of the character described, the combination of amount keys, a universal bail operated thereby, a camslotted link connected to said bail, a pitman engaged with the cam slot of said link, areciprocating member to actuate the pitman, a latch to which the latter is connected, an abutment slide held in eifective position by said latch, adding and printing mechanisms under control of said keys, a special typecarrier associated with the printing mechanism and designed to characterize the first of a list of added amounts, a stop-piece cooperating with said type-carrier and said slide to hold the former in printing position when the slide is l'atched means for effecting a clearingo eration and thereby moving the slide to c ective position, the next ensuingadding operation unlatching the slide, and a special key arranged to disable the adding mechanism, said key connected with the cam-slotted link and shifting the same to displace the pitman and prevent unlatching of the abutment slide.
30. In a machine of the character described, the combination of amount keys, a universal bail operated thereby, a cam-slotted link connected to said bail, a pitman engaged with the cam slot of said link, a reciprocating member to actuate the pitman, a latch to which the latter is connected, an

In a machine of the character described, the combination with a rocking ac-' .items and a type to characterize an unadded item, a stop arm for determining the position of said special type-carrier, a special key having astem with a cam-portion to act on said stop-arm to position it for causing the type carrier to present its type characterizing an unadded item, said key-stem arranged to enter the path of the Wipe-pawl to prevent engagement of the accumulator with the set actuators; means for adjusting the pitman to eifect a clearing operation and moving the stop-arm beyond the position for causing the special type carrier to prevent the type characterizing an, unadded item; an abutment slide for holding said arm in position for causing the special type carrier to present its type which characterizes the first of a list of added items; means for moving Elld slide to effective position in the before mentioned clearing operation; a latch which holds said slide in effective position, a pitman for displacing the latch, a universal bail actuated by the amount keys, a link connected to said bail and having a cam-slot engaging the last-mentioned pitman and a slot engaging the stem of said specialkcy, and a reciprocating member for acting on said last-mentioned pitman when amount keys are 1operated without operation of said special rey.

rier for said pinions having studs above and below its pivot, a vertically movable and horizontally reciprocating pitman having a branch notched for engagement with the upper stud and normally embracing the same and an oppositely extending branch hooked for engagement with. the lower stud but normally elevated above the same, said pitman tending to drop disengaging its notched branch from the associated stud and bringing its hooked branch to rest upon the lower stud, a link connected at one end with said pitman, a normally upheld total key lever having a slot and pin connection with said link and equipped for direct depression to cause lowering of the link and consequent. disengagement of the notched branch thereof from the upper stud leaving the link and pitman free to drop further as permitted by the slot and pin connection and eli ectively engage its hooked oranch with the lower stud, aseparate depressible subtotal key lever, and a bar connected therewith and engaging the said total key lever to de )ress the same, said bar adapted to engage t e link and prevent the slot-and pin drop of the pitman and having an angular slot engaging a fixed stud, the bar being normally upheld by the link but lowered upon depression of the total key leverand interlocked with said fixed stud to prevent depression of the sub-total key lever.

In a machine of the character de scribed, the combination of vertically recip-- rocating racks, accumulator pinions normally in mesh therewith, a pivoted carrier for said pinions having studs above and below its pivot, a vertically movable and horizontally reciprocating pitman having a branch notched tor ei'igagementwith the upper stud and normally embracingthe same and an oppositely extending branch hooked for engagement with the lower stud but normally elevated above the same, said pitman tending to drop disengaging its notched branch from the associated stud and bringing its hooked branch to rest upon the lower stud, a link connected at one end with said pitman andhaving a laterally projecting stud or pin, a ntgmally upheld total key lever having a slot and pin connection with said link and equipped for direct depression to cause lowering of the link and consequent disengagement of the notched branch thereof from the upper stud leaving the link and pitman free to drop further as permitted by the slot and pin connection and effectively engage its hooked branch with the lower stud, a separate depressible sub-total key lever, and a shouldered bar connected therewith and engaging the said total key lever to depress the same, the link stud normally standing above and beyond the shoulder of the bar but adapted upon direct depression of; the total key lever to-pass down i l l l l 1 l l l l i I along said shoulder and prevent movement of the bar whereas when the subtotal key lever is depressed the bar is drawn under said link stud to prevent the slot-and-pin drop of the pitman, and the said bar having an angular slot engaging a fixed stud, the bar being normally upheld by the link but lowered upon depression of the tctal key lever and interlocked with said fixed stud to prevent depression of the sub-total key lover. In a machine of the character described, the combination of accumulating and printing mechanisms and actuating means therefor; of a depressible key for disabling the accumulating mechanism. and a lock for preventing depression of such key during operation of the accumulating mechanism by the actuating means.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of accumulating and printing mechanisms and actuating means therefor; ot a depressible key for dis abling the accumulating mechanism, and a lock for preventing depression of such key during operation of the accuuudating mech anism by the actuating means with provisions for holding said key depressed during an operation of the printing mechanism unaccompanied by an operation of the accumulating mechanism.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of accumulating and printing mechanisms and actuating means therefor; of a depressible key for disabling the accumulating mechanism, a latch for holding said key depressed, and a lock for preventing depression of such key during operation of the accumulating mechanism by the actuating means.
