To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that we, TOM EDWARD BEN- NETT BROWN and JAMES A. Boss, both subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 25 Ashbrook road, Upper Holloway, London, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lubricators, of which the following is a full and complete specification.
This invention relates to grease cup lubricators, and it consists of an improved means for preventing the adjustable cup from be coming accidentally detached.
In the accompanying drawing which illus trates this invention :Figure l is a view in elevation of the complete lubricator, Fig. 2 is another view in elevation, partly in section, Fig. 3 is a view in plan of the locking device, and Fig. 4. is a view in elevation showing a modification.
Throughout the views similar parts are marked with like letters of reference.
The two main parts, the base A adapted to be fixed to the part to be lubricated, and the adjustable cup B, are of well-known construction, the former being provided with a non-round shank part a and the latter provided with a handle 6 or its equivalent for rotating it. Free to slide on-the shank part a of the base part A is a plate D the hole in which is shaped to correspond with the shank part so that it cannot rotate thereon. This plate carries one or more spring arms cl each of which has a nib or finger cl on its front end adapted to engage with a circumferential projection on the cup part B. This projection may either take the form of a ridge G as shown in Fig. 1 or may be formed by the lower edge of a circumferential groove C as shown in Fig. 4. In the construction shown in the accompanying drawing four spring arms are employed but we do not limit ourselves to this or any other number. The length of the shank part a of the base part A, the length of the spring arms d, and the position of the ridge G are such that the nibs or fingers of the spring arms engage with the ridge C throughout the whole range of movement of the cup part B.
After filling the cup and engaging it with the threads of the base A the plate D is lifted until the nibs or fingers engage the ridge on the cup; said nibs or fingers then allow of free movement of the cup in a downward direction, but only in an upward direction until the plate D comes into contact with the underside of the base A. When this occurs further upward movement of the screw-cap sets up suflicient friction between the ridge on the cup and the spring armswhich are prevented from turning by reason of the hole in it through which the shank a passes being of such a shape that it cannot rotate on said shankto prevent the said cup from accidentally turning on the base and thus working off said part.
What we claim as our invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is In a grease lubricator, the combination of a base part threaded externally and having an elongated shank by which it is fixed to the part to be lubricated, a cup-shaped part threaded internally to engage the screw threads on the base part, a projection running circumferentially round the exterior of said cup-shaped part, a plate adapted to slide on the shank of the base part, spring arms carried by said plate, and nibs or fingers on said spring arms which engage longitudinally with the circumferential projection on the cup-shaped part, as set forth.
