Application. tiled November .1.0, 1914i. Serial No. S'Zlfla. l
Cupsg and l do declare the followingto be a clear, full, and lexact description of the saine` such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertairis to maire and use the same, reference beinghad to the aeeompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon., which form part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in grease cups and4 particularly to that type used on large. bearings such as are found on locomotives and similar machinery, the object of the invent-ion being' to produce a grease cup having a means lor locking' the cap in position against losing and at the same time providing' a means for admitting o a'predetermined amount of llubrication for any given number ofrevolutions of the bearings to be lubricated.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effecu tive for the purposes for which it is designed. i v
These objects, l accomplish by means oi such structure and relative arrangement of the parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
On the drawings, similar characters ofreference indicate corresponding' parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the preferred form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the sameA partly broken out and in section. Fig; 3 is a top plan view of a modied form. Fig. d is a side eleva-y tion of the subject matter shown in Fig. 8. Fig. 5 is a side view in section of still an' other modification or' the invention.
Referring' now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral l designates the grease cup proper, which is of the usual interior threaded type, while the numeral 2 designates the cap of the same having the usual wrench socket 2 or other suitable ioperating member.
My improved invention embodies two or more notches 3 cut into the outside edge of the cap 2 andadapted to receive a springv .pressed pin .'mounted on the cup 1 amil-en-y gageahle with one of said notches E to prevent rotation of the cap ln the preferred torni olf the invention this pin d is mounted on a spring wire 5 secured to the cup l, the tension oit which spring normally holds said pin in engagement with one of the notches d. in order to remove the pin l from the notch 3 to allow the rotation of the cap 2, ll have provided a small handle 6 pivotally mount ed on the lip .7 on the wire 5 and provided with a lcurved cam 8 engageeble with the (i Ll side of the cup l whereby, with themove ment of the handle 6, the'spring wire 5 will be moved away from the side ofthe cup .l
carrying withit the pin a and thus releasing the pin 4 from one of. the notches 3.
T he structure above described is susceptilole of two functions, namely, Vthe cap 2 will be locked against being shaken loose by the vibration of the machinery .and becoming l'ost and at the saine time the notches 3 can Vhe s spaced that with the movement of the cap 2, the distrihuter. between one notch and the other` will force any amount of grease from thecup l suflciently to luhrcate theA bearing' for al given numberofmiles.
'lnthe cap 2 of the grease cup, l have provided a central `chamber le, the lower and upper extremities thereof having, inwardly projecting shoulders 15 and l5, respectively., the shoulder 15a forming sort of an auxiliery chamber 16 above the chamber 14. The object'of this particular structure is to prevent too rapid. an outow oi' the Iregressie.
@ilA
When the cup becomes Warm, clue to the heat received from adjacent moving.f parts, the
grease becomes Warm and hencesoftens and has a tendency to run too freely from the cup. This tendency is retarded by the :tact
and 15 cause the grease inthe intervening.;l space lll in a measure to be locked in posh that the inwardly projecting shoulders l5` tion, and also prevents any air .from eeusily reaching' the chamber 16. Bv reasonof this latter condition. a sort of avacuum is formed in the chamber 16 so that togetherl with the locking shouldersll-lland this vacuum, the tendency of the grease to dow out too rapidly is largely overcome.
ln the structure shown in the modilie form in Figs. 3 vand e, the numeral l designates the cup. 2b the can and 3 the notches.
instead of the pin el provide a spring,F pressed ratchet fl pivotally mounted between lips 'll'ron the side of the cup le, which ratchet projects into one of the noteheee. l
' 9 against the spring Fmi This ratchet 4a normally holds the .cap 2 against movement, but by releasing it from the notch 3, movement can be had, as described above. y
in the modified form shown numeral 1* designates the cup, 2 designates the' cap and 3? the notches. The pin 4* is provided with a collar 9vmoving in a small cylinder 10 secured to the side of the cup lb with a spring 11 interposed between the end of the cylinder and the collar 9 to hold the pin 4b normally in engagement with one of ,the notches 3*'. A handle 12 is hinged to the pin 4b and projects outside of the cylinder l0. To remove the pin 4b from the notch 3, the handle ,l2 is operated to pull the collar 11 until the hinged point 13, between the handle l2 and the pin 4e, is outside of the cylinder 10 when the handle 12 may be moved on its hinged point andvlocked against the end of the cylinder l() to hold the pin i" ont of engagement with the notch 3b as long as marche desired.
From the foregoing scription it will readily be seen that I have producedsuch a device as substantially ulls the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
TWhile this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice, such deviations from such detail may` be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of in Fig. 5, the
mer/,er1
the invention as defined by the appended claims.
' Having'l thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz- 1. A device of the character described comprising in combination a grease cup, a cap threaded into said cup. the said can being provided with an interior chamber having its upper portion reduced in diameter, an inwardly projecting fiange at the lower end of such chamber, and means for looking said cup ag inst rotation as described.
A device of the character described comprising the combination with a grease cup, of a cap threaded into said grease cup and provided with notches in its side, a spring pressed member mounted on said cup and engageable with said notches, a cam pivotally mounted on said spring: pressed member and arranged to be brought into engagement with the side of sind cup to remove such spring pressed member from engagement with said notches, and mounted on said'cam, as described.
In testin'iony whereof I aiix my in presence of two witnesses.
