@zw I WWIW @901 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW I}. FAHBENHOL Z, 0F BROCK, NEBRASKA.
ROPE-WINDING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW L. FAHREN- HOLZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brock, in the county of Nemaha and State of Nebraska, have invented a certain new and useful Rope-Winding Device, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of simple, durable and inexpensive construction designed for general use in cases where it is desired to wind up a rope, and especially in connection with the use of hay forks, and in similar devices where it is desirable to control the rope winding device from a point distant to the winding drum, so that it may be controlled by the driver on a wagon which is being unloaded.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a device embodyin my invention. Fig. 2 shows an end view of same, andFig. 3 shows an enlarged detail sectional view of the winding drum, and the friction clutch device connected therewith.
teferring to the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate the base of the device having mounted at one end an upright support 11, and at its other end an upright support 12. At the top of the latter upright, is a rigid arm 13 extended inwardly to a point over the central portion of the base. Mounted in suitable hearings in the supports 11 and 12 near the lower ends thereof, is a shaft 14 having the pulley 15 thereon, and a small pinion 16. The pulley 15 is designed to receive a belt from an engine or other power device, which may be continuously operated during the time that the device is being used. Supported in the same uprights above the shaft 14: is a shaft 17 having thereon a gear wheel 18 in mesh with the pinion 16 and also having rotatably mounted thereon a drum 19,
which is held from longitudinal movement on the shaft 17 by means of a collar 20.
Fixed to the drum 19 at one side thereof, is an annular friction clutch member 21, and adjacent to it is a co-acting friction clutch member 22 supported upon a hub 23, which latter is slidingly and non-rotatably con- Specification of Letters Patent.

nected with the shaft 17 by means of the set screw 24 passed through the hub and inserted in a longitudinal slot 25 in the shaft 17. The hub is also provided with an annular groove 26.
A rope or cable 27 is attached to and wound on the drum. Fulcrumed to the arm 13 is a lever 28 having its lower end inserted in the annular groove 26. Pivoted to the upper end of the lever 28 is a rod 29 having a handle 30 at its outer end.
In practical use, and assuming that it is desired to use the device in operating a hay fork, then the rope winding device is placed in position where the rope of the hay fork may be attached to the winding drum thereon, and a horse power or engine is operatively connected with the pulley 15 and continues to operate while the rope winding device is being used. The driver or operator tion clutch 21, and causing the rope or cable 27 to wind up. He may readily control the movement of the fork by moving the handle 30 away from him or toward him, and as soon as the hay fork has reached its destination, the operator pushes the handle 30 from him, thus throwing the friction clutch out of engagement and stopping the further movement of the hay fork, then the fork may be discharged in the usual way, and {eturned by gravity to the wagon for a new oad.
One of the important advantages 'in connection with my improvement is that the operator or driver upon a load may fully con trol the rope winding device without getting down from the wagon. In this way, the services of a separate operator for the rope winding device may be dispensed with.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, therefor, is
A rope winding device of the class described, comprising a base, two uprights at the ends thereof, one of said uprights being provided with an arm extended inwardly over the base, a power shaft mountand operatively connected with the sliding hub, a lateral extension at the upper end of said lever designed to be grasped by a per son in an elevated position at a point distant from the rope winding device, substantially as and for the purposes stated.
