TYPE-WRITER ERASER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. HYER, citizen of the United States, residing at East St. Louis, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writer Erasers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates in general to improvements in erasers, and more particularly to that type of erasers which are especially designed and constructed for use in connection with typewriters.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of an eraser of this character which is simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be quickly applied to the roller of any typewriting machine, and
which will operate in a quick and effective manner to erase either one character or a number of characters as may be desired.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a typewriter eraser embodying a novel construction whereby the abrasive member may be caused to bear against the paper with either a light or a heavy pressure as may be desired.
With these and other objects in view, the invention. consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an eraser constructed in accordance with the invention, portions being broken away and shown in section. Fig. 2 is an end view of the eraser, portions being broken away and shown in section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1, the abrading member being omitted. Fig. 1 is a plan view of the base plate. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the shield, and Fig. 6 is a detail view of the abrading member.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the present embodiment of the invention, the numerals 1 designate the two side pieces of the spring Specification of Letters Patent.

frame, the said members being constructed of some resilient material such as spring wire, and being arch shaped. Crimped or inwardly deflected portions 1* are preferably formed in the legs of the arch shaped 1nembers 1 and serve to increase the resiliency of the same. The upper portions of the side pieces 1 are rigidly clamped between the knob 2 and the head 3 upon which the swinging frame carrying the rubber or abrading member is pivoted, grooves or depressions t being provided for the said side pieces, and the head being constructed with a threaded stem 5 which is engaged by the knob. The lower ends of the side pieces are secured to a base plate 6 which is transversely curved to conform to the roller of a typewriter, and which is formed with the rectangular opening 7. Longitudinally disposed tongues 8 project inwardly from the four corners of this opening 7 and are offset above the base plate to admit of a shield 9 sliding between the same and the base plate. Projecting longitudinally from the ends of the shield are the tongues 10 which are deflected downwardly so as to extend under the base plate, and projecting laterally from one of the longitudinal edges of the shield is a finger piece 11. It will thus be obvious that the shield is held securely against longitudinal displacement, but can be readily moved laterally by grasping the finger piece 11 and applying the necessary force thereto. The central portion of the shield is formed with a large opening 12 designed to expose several characters to the action of the abrading member, and also with a small opening 13 designed to expose but a single character, either of the said openings being brought into operative position by sliding the shield laterally as required.
The rubber or abrading member 14: is are shaped and is removably clamped between the segment shaped plates constituting the swinging frame by means of the screws 16. The said segment shaped plates 15 are pivoted at their upper ends to the reduced lower end 3 of the head 3 by means of the pivot pin 17, and are designed to swing back and forth between the side pieces 1 of the spring frame. A handle 18 is loosely connected to one end of this swinging frame by means of the pin 19, and constitutes a convenient means for manipulating the same, the rubber 14 acting upon that portion of the paper exposed through either of the openings of the shield 9. In the operation of the device the shield 9 is first moved to bring either the opening 12 or the opening 13 into operative position, according to whether it is desired to erase a number of characters or only a single character. The knob 2 is then grasped in one hand and the eraser applied to the paper, the swinging frame being moved bacl; and forth by means of the handle 18 which is grasped by the other hand, and the rubber being thereby caused to have the usual abrading and cleansing action upon that portion of the paper exposed by the shield. At this point it is desired to direct particular attention to the fact that owing to the peculiar construction of the spring frame as previously described, the operator can regulate the pressure by which the rubber bears against the paper by bearing either lightly or heavily upon the knob 52 with his hand as may be required.
Having thus described the invention,what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In an eraser, the combination of a yieldably constructed main frame, a swinging frame mounted thereon, and an abrading member carried by the swinging frame, the yieldable construction of the mainframe enabling the pressure of the abrading member against the member upon which the erasure is being made to be regulated.
2. In an eraser, the combination of a spring arch member, a knob applied thereto, a swinging frame carried by the spring arch member, and an abrading member ap plied to the swinging frame.
3. In an eraser, the combination of a spring arch member the legs of which are formed with crimped portions, a swinging frame mounted upon the arch member, and an abrading member carried by the swinging frame.
5. In an eraser, the combination of a knob, a head, a main frame clamped between the knob and the head, a swinging frame pivoted upon the head, and an abrading member carried by the swinging frame.
6. In an eraser, the combination of a knob, a head, a spring arch member clamped between the knob and the head, a swinging frame mounted upon the head, and an abrading member carried by the swinging frame.
7. In an eraser, the combination of a main frame, a base plate carried thereby, a swinging frame mounted upon the main frame, an abrading member carried by the swinging frame, and a shield slidably mounted upon the base plate in cooperative relation to the abrading member.
8. In an eraser, the combination of a main frame, a base plate carried by the main frame and having an opening therein, the said base plate being formed with tongues which project from the edge of the opening and are offset from the base plate, a shield slid-ably mounted between the said offset tongues and the base plate and formed with a plurality of openings any selected one of which can be brought into operative position, and a movably mounted abrading member carried by the main frame.
9. In an eraser, the combination of a knob, a head, a pair of spring arch shaped members clamped between the knob and the head, a base plate applied to the said arch shaped members, a shield adjustably mounted upon the base plate, a swinging frame pivoted upon the head, and an abrading member carried by the swinging frame.
