To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH CLEMENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Proctor, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in G'ar-Replacers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in car replacers, and pertains particularly to those used on railroad cars and engines.
The object of my invention is to provide a replacer of this character comprising two blocks so constructed and arranged that the flange of the outside wheel is readily carried over the rail, while the inside wheel is raised sufliciently to place it upon the rail.
Another object of my invention is to provide a single-ended device of this character having a double side, whereby it can be used the same as a double-ended device, and at the same time having a longer incline, and thus making the replacing of the car much more easy.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a more simple, cheap and effective device of this character.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a top plan View of a railroad bed, showing the inside and outside members applied to the ties. Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view showing the car wheels in clotted lines in the act of mounting the rails. Fig. 3, is an enlarged, inverted, perspective view of the members showing the interior structure for lessening the weight of the same.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents the ties of a railroad bed, and 2 and 3 the two rails, the derailed car wheels 4 and 5 being shown in dotted lines. The replacing blocks as shown, are indicated by 6 and 7.
6 represents the inside block which is always adapted to be used on the inside, and can be reversed or placed in front or rear of the wheel, so that it can be used in the same manner as the double ended blocks.
7 represents the outside block which may be used in the rear or front of the wheel, and is also constructed so that the flange of the wheel is lifted above the rail, so that it can be carried over the rail on the inside thereof.

The block 6 has its end 8 broader than the end 9, and has the flat standing or inclined surfaces 10 and 11, divided by the upwardlyextending ribs 12, which have their upper ends divided as indicated at 12 and 12 which extend or slant toward the sides of the block. This divided portion of the rib makes the block much lighter, although the rib could be made solid if desired. The upper end of the block is rounded, as indicated at 13, whereby the flange of the wheel has a tendency to slide down over the rounded portion.
The flange of the wheel engages the rib and is guided inwardly until it mounts the rounded portion 13, and the tread of the wheel is lowered upon the rail.
The block 7 is considerably higher than the block 6, as this is necessary for the outside wheel to carry the flange of the wheel over the tread of the rail. This block 7 is made the same width throughout its entire length and is provided with the inclined faces 14: and 14:, divided by the wedgeshaped rib 15. The inclined faces of the block terminate in the rounded faces 16. The flange of the wheel rides up upon the inclined surface and the tread of the wheel rides upon the wedge-shaped ribs 15, until the flange engages the rounded face 16 and the wheel is carried downwardly, the flange passing over the rail and the tread of the wheel settling upon the rail. This block 7 is double-sided like the block 6, so that it can be used on either the front or rear side of the wheel.
The blocks 6 and 7 adjacent their forward ends, are provided with flanges 17 and 18 on each side, and said flanges are provided with openings 19 by means of which the blocks are secured to the ties. ,The flanges 17, as shown, are above the bottom of the blocks so that they will overlap the base of the rail as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The blocks are made of cast metal and hollow to save welght, and are provided with transverse rlbs 20 to strengthen the blocks and whereby strong light blocks are obtained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A car replacer comprising a block on the inside of one rail and upwardly-arched at one end and gradually inclined upwardly from its opposite end, and divided 1ongitu= dinally by an upwardly-extending wedge shaped rib, a second block on the outside of the other rail and upwardly-arched at one end and gradually inclined upwardly from the opposite end and having an upwardlyextending rib not as long as the block said outside block being of a reater height than the inside block, and aterally extending flanges carried by the blocks above the bottom thereof for securing them to the ties.
2. A car replacer comprising a hollow block, transverse ribs therein, laterally extending securing ribs above the bottom, the upper face of the block having an inclined forward end and a transverse rounded rear end, and a wedge shaped rib on the upper face of the block.
3. A car replacer comprising a block on the inside of one rail and having an upwardly inclined forward end and a transverse rounded rear end, and divided longitib dinally by an upwardly-extending wedgeshaped rib extending the entire length of the block, aseeond block on the outside of the other rail and having an upwardly inclined forward end terminating in a transverse rounded rear end, and the upwardly inclined face having a wedge-shaped rib terminating at the rounded portion, said outside bloek being of a greater height than the inside block, and laterally turned flanges carried by the blocks for securing them to the ties.
