HARRY J. BECK, OF PHILIPSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHOKE-COIL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. July 19, 1910.
Application filed September 2, 1909. Serial No. 515,802.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Il.\RRY J. BECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at lhilipsburg, iu the county of Center and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Choke- Coils; and I do declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to choke coils, reactance coils or the like. In the use of these coils for moving picture machines, it is necessary that their adjustment be made with comparative case so as to obtain an adjustcd amperage. Heretofore, it has been the custom to adjust these coils bymoving their supporting frame so that the desired amperage was obtained and locking the frames in proper position. lVith this scheme considerable time was wasted in shutting off the current and tightening up the parts until the desired adjustment is made.
The object. of the invention is to avoid the foregoing diliiculties and toprovide a coil by which the amperage may be regulated without shutting otf the current and without tightening up any of the frame parts, after the adjustment has been made.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is an end elevation.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 represents the base of any suitable insulating material. Secured to the ends of the base and projecting v rtically therefrom are standards 2. having notches 3 formed in their inner ripper edges and adapted to receive the core a. This core is constructed substantially diamond shape and is preferably of laminated strips of soft iron. Mounted upon the core and connected in series, as shown, are two inductance coils 5 and 6 having a pigtail connection. These coils are adapted to slide upon the core 4 toward and away from each other and are wound to assist each other and when arranged close together, set up sufficient magnetic inductance in the circuit to retard the current an appreciable amount. 'lVhen set close together, we will say that there is twenty amperes obtained and when separated the full length of the core, the magnetic inductance is decreased and it. is possible to obtain from thirty-live to forty amperes in the circuit.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and d e minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In a device of the class described, a base, standards mounted thereon and provided with sockets therein, an angular core seated in said sockets, coils slid-ably mounted upon said core, and a flexible connection between said coils which connects the same electrically in series.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARRY J. BECK.
