CONTAINER.
Application filed June 28, 1909. Serial No.. 504,896.- Y
To all 'whom 'it Imay concern:vv
Be it known that I, BEN .0. DARROW, a citizen of theUnited States of America, residing at Kern city, in the county of Kern and State of California, have 'invented a new and useful Improvement '1n Containers, of'which the following is aspecification.v
This inventionl relates Ito containers preferably made from fibrous material, as paper, and has for one of its objects to render the same waterproof in any desired manner, preferably by providing the interior with one or more coatings of waterproof material. f y l Another object is to form the body of the container from two thicknesses of material, said material preferably constituting a single lengthvor piece having the portions thereof forming the different layers of dif-v ferent widths so as to form a shoulder upon the interior at each end. Y
Another object is toprovide means at one or both ends for temporarily securing an end piece therein, as by forming tongues upon saidend piece and the sides of the container and interlocking them, as by roll- Other objects of the inventlon will be- I come apparent as the invention is hereiny 'so ings which are after more fully disclosed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which 'form a part of the specilication and -in whiclrl.
Figure l is a longitudinal, central, sectional vieW of one form of container embodying my invention.' -Fig. 2 is an end View, partly invsection, looking down, the section being taken substantially midway of the length of the package.- Fig. 3 is a diametrical, sectional view of the` cover before the same is inserted. Fig. 4 is a plan-view of the bottom. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from whichthe sides of the container are formed. Figl `6 is an end view of a cylindrical container. Referring more articular-ly to the drawor illustrative purposes only, and, therefore, are not drawn to any particular scale, 1 indicates the sides or main portion of the container within which end pieces are placed, the bottom 2 being preferably permanently secured therein an the top or cover 3 being adapted to be inserted after the container has been filled.
The sides l are preferably'formed from 'a piece or `strip (L 'of fibrous material, suchA as manila or other suitable paper.
As will be seen by an examination of'Fig. 5 the ends 5 and 6 of the blank are of different widths'with shoulders 7 formed therebetween substantially midway the length of the blank. The narrower end or portion of the blank is adapted to form the inner layer ofthe wall of the`container andtherefore its length is substantially equal to: the in ternal diameter of the container whether Sipecication of Letters Patent.l n Patented .fully 19"..191pI the same be rectangular, as shownin Fig. 2, or circular, as shown in Fig.v 6. The Wider p end'of the blank is also longer than thevnarrower end, sothat after thenarrower end has been rolled ork formed into the proper shape for the internal layer of the container the outer layer is then wrapped around the inner'layer with its edges projecting the edges of .the narrower end an its free end extending beyond the lap `or the free-end of the inner layer far enough to permit of its forming a very strong joint, as shown at Y 8 in Fi 2. Before the wider end is thus` wrappe around, the inner end water-proof material is preferably placed between said layers, preferably as a coating 9 which is applied upon the inner facev of said 'wider portion.
By forming the body ofthe container in this manner 1t will be seen that a shoulder 10 is formed entirely around the interior of each end of the. container of a width equal to the thickness of the aper employed againstwhich .the top and ottom 3 and 2, respectively, are vadapted to engage when the container is completed and closed.- Afwall or flange 11 is also formed of a width equal to the excess of the width of the wider end of the blank over the Width of the narrower 9 5 end, the ed es of the narrower end lof lthe blank. forming the shoulders vas above described. Where the bottom 2 is permanently4 secured in the container, as shown in Fig. l, it is referably ma e a trie larger than the lnternal diameter of the flange 11 at p forced in against its shoulder abead 12 will be formed around the outside of the container, thereby assisting materially by friction in preventing the removal of the bottom. To further assist in holding the botthat end so that when it is' tom in position the outer edge of the iange Y may bel rolledor curled in against the bottom of the bottom piece, as shown at 13 in fared outward, as shown at 14, from the shoulder 10. Withjths form of construction the cover`3 is also preferably provided with a Haring' wall'o'r flange" 15 which is adapted to beforced'down intothe flared portion 14 until Vthe cover rests firmly vagainst 'saidshoulder' 10 which will cause thefouter edges of said 4 fianges to besubvstantally even with ea'ch other, the wall o r flange of" the cover' being preferably of? a less heightthanthe wall of theV container,
as shown at 16. In order tofurther assist in holding thel cover against' accidental rem'ovaltthe walls'lft and"15 are preferably slitte'd longitudinally at' a slight distance apart, a's shown at 17, andthe' tongues 18 an'df19` 'formed thereby are crimped or'rolled together into. a double' roll, as shown .at 20,
' which extendsin so as to overhang the lcover 3 and, if desired, to bear against' the same.
After the bodyl has been formed as above described and the bottom inserted! therein the interior'- f 'f the container, as also the inner', face of'h'e cover, is. referably coated with a coating of" suitalble material, as .araiin, which will assist in fpreventing any eakage thatfmight occur anl will also render the interior of'the container waterproof and also adaptedz to preserve its contents Without being contaminated by the material from which said container is formed. In addition to this, by making the coating fromv 'parafiin the waterprof coating which is applied between the Ilayers :of the'con'tainer Wilbe prevented froni coming in contact with the contents 'ofi-the container, especially at the, inner ed e of vtlie innerflayer, and, therefore, may 'fof' a substancev such'as ordinary glue," which under other'circumstances, or Without the internal coating, could n 'o't" be used owing to Vits contamination of the contents ofthe contfiner. Thel use' of thejwaterfproof coatingbetween the'.
-mottled appearance or ot erwise militate against itsv use: By preserving the outerl 'per'end and anged cover '3.1 A'further atllayer or'surface ofthe container-inuits origmal cond1t1on 1n this manner it can be utilized for printing or applying labels orv with cylindrical forms and in addition to that the corners are preferably slightly rounded, as shown at 21, which permits of the correspondingly rounded corners .22Vl of the bottom and top being forced into such f close engagement with the corners of the L container that leakage at that point isjprevented, andA especially with the flanged upvantage secured extending -the wall or offcontainer as above-described for the re- I ceptionand storage of milk, as when the same is being delivered to the, customers, it is evident thatthe same can be. utilized for other purposes, las the storing of fruits, Syrups, &c., either -vfor a greater or shorter length of time. 'Thev container can be cheaply formed from ordinary material and Will possess great strength and durability and will have'v many points of advantage as above fully.' set forth. v
Having described my invention, I- claim:
A container comprising a blank having a -narrow end; and'- a Wide end, of greater length than the narrow end, and coiled, so as to form .inner and outer layers;.the ends of the blank being overlapped and the outer layer providing a Haring end projecting beyond the inner layer and having cover reflange4 14 at the' upper end and rounding the emptied and especiallyv fwhen such taining tongues and a cover formed with flaring'wallsand seated on the outer end of the innerlayer'and within. the' flaring outer end ofthe outer layer and having tongues` coincidingiawithA the tongues of the Haring en In testimony whereof, 1 have hereunto vset myhand at Kernjcity,-California, this 8th 'Ida-y of Jiine ,1909. prevent the' passagepf" the material'of the .I `BEN ORLANDO DARROW.v y In presence of- E.. o. OBOYLE, J. K. SMITH.
