To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAooB SINGER, otficer, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Dorna I/Vatra, Bukowina, Austria-Hungary, have invented new and useful Improvements in Protective Shields for Guns, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a protective shield for guns and especially for small arms.

The essential feature of the invention consists in this, that the shield, which is easily removable from and readily fixed to the gun and which is carried in an oblique position thereon relative to the direction of fire, is fixed to the gun in such manner that projectiles hitting the shield, do so at an acute angle, and are gradually stopped in their forward movement by the shield which is capable of being pressed down on to a resilient support and thereby the force of percussion is more or less destroyed and the projectile deflected.

In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I file an explanatory sheet of drawings whereon I have shown my invention as used for rifles.

Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the shield fixed to a rifle. Fig. 2 is a plan view.

The same reference numerals wherever repeated indicate the same parts.

The arrangement consists in having a shield 1' of suitable material which is fixed to a supporting plate 2 in such manner that the shield is capable of yielding under pressure and of regaining its original position when freed therefrom.

In carrying out my invention I provide the shield, near its lower corner, with two slots 3, through which two hook shaped claws 5, fixed to the supporting plate 2 penetrate. On the underside of the shield the supporting plate 2 is provided with suitable clamps and hoops 4: or similar arrangements which allow of the whole arrangement being readily fixed to and removed from the rifle. The shield 1 rests on a spring 6 of any suitable kind, the shield being held resiliently in an oblique position by the spring 6, so that a projectile, fired against the shield hits the latter at an acute angle, the shock of percussion being considerably lessened by the resilient action of the shield and the projectile finally deflected from its course.

To limit the yielding movement of the shield 1, a hoop shaped device 7, capable of being swung downward from its normal vertical to a horizontal position, is fixed to the supporting plate 2. On its surface, the device 7 is provided with a suitable spring cushion 8 or the like, so that the shock on the rifle is softened.

Instead of the spring 6 any other resilient support may be used.

At a suitable place, the shield is provided with a slot 9, so that a correct sight can be taken. The outer surface of the shield may be advantageously masked in a suitable manner by means of painting or otherwise so as to baflie the enemys aim.

The arrangement herein described could be applied to all kinds of light guns and if the construction be altered in a suitable manner it could also be used for heavy guns.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be per formed, I declare that what I claim is 1. A protecting device for small arms and ordnance comprising in combination with the barrel, of a support disposed on top of the barrel, means extending downwardly from said support and about the barrel for anchoring the support thereto, a shield hinged to the forward end of said support,

a leaf spring mounted at one end on said support and engaging said shield with its free end to hold it in an inclined position with respect to the longitudinal axis of the barrel, and a spring mounted on said support and normally out of engagement with said shield for cushioning the downward movement thereof under the impact of a projectile.

2. A protecting device for small arms and ordnance comprising in combination with the barrel, of a support disposed on top of the barrel, means anchoring the support to the barrel, a shield hinged to the support, a spring mounted on the support and holding the shield in inclined position with respect to the longitudinal axis of the barrel, and a spring mounted on said support and normally out of engagement with said shield for cushioning the downward movement thereof under impact of a projectile.

A. protecting device for small arms and ordnance comprising in combination with the barrel, of a support disposed on the barrel, a shield movably mounted on the support means for yieldingly holding the shield in an inclined position with respect to the longitudinal axis of the barrel, and yielding means normally out of engagement with the shield for cushioning downward movement thereof under impact of a projectile.
