To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM R. Fox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in miter cutting machines.
It relates more particularly to improvements in miter cutting machines of the FoX type, the invention having to do especially with the means for propelling the knife and its carriage.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, effective actuating means for such a mitering machine, which is readily adjustable to take up wear, which does not become clogged, which is not likely to get out of repair, and which is simple and easy to manufacture.
A further object is to provide improvements in the actuating lever and also to improve details of construction.
I accomplish the objects of this invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure embodying the principles of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a mitering machine, embodying the features of my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical detail sectional elevation taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing details of attaching the cable; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail transverse sectional elevation taken on a line corresponding to line 3 3 of Fig. 1, with the handle in the vertical position; Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on line 4--4 of Fig.v 3, showing a toothed catch for driving the gear wheel; and Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of the gear wheel showing the central portion of the actuating cable and the method of attaching it.
In the drawing, the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines, and similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the numbered parts of the drawing: The table 1, which is of the usual form found on a FOX trimmer, is provided Specification of Letters Patent.

with a top rail 2 between which are guided the usual knife and its carriage 3, the usual guides being provided on the table for supporting the material to be cut. The knife carriage 3 is secured at the journal 17 on which is the driving or gear wheel 4, which is provided with a double groove on its periphery and a cable 18 is wrapped around the same, being secured at its center by a clip 19 and the opposite ends being adjustably secured by the end pieces 2O suitably soldered or swaged thereto, into which is inserted a screw-threaded bolt 21 by means of which the tension of this driving cable is adjustable.
It will be seen that when the wheel 4 is rotated in either direction, owingl to the fact that it is on the journal 17, it re-acts upon the knife carriage 3, carrying it back and forth in suitable guides provided therefor, in the direction of the movement of the lever, which is of advantage. This wheel can be actuated by any suitable means but I preferably actuate it by the special means I have here shown which consists of a hollow lever G which is inserted in a suitable casting 5 which is provided with a journal bearing embracing the outer end of the journal 17. A slide 7 is provided, having a guiding lug 9 on its outer side and engaging teeth 8 on its inner side to engage the gear teeth or notches around the periphery of the wheel 4. This slide 7 is controlled by the rod 10 which is connected to a knob or handle 11 at the outer end of the lever, which knob has a shank reciprocating in the end of the lever, its motion being limited by the pin 12.
A cross-pin 13 is at the inner end and extends through a slot 14 in the sides of the lever and is riveted or driven tight into the slide 7 A spring 15 is inside the lever and connects to the inner end of the rod 10 and to a cross-pin 16 in the lower end of the lever and through its connection holds the slide 7 and its engaging teeth 3 normally toward the wheel 4. The lever is operated by lifting the slide 7 by the knob 11, swinging it to any desired position, permitting the slide and its engaging teeth to constitute a catch to engage and then pulling or pushing the lever to rotate the wheel 4 and thereby driving the carriage to any extent desired. It enables the lover to be operated with great facility and it can be swung to the best angle for effectively operating the knife carriage; and enables the workman to swing the lever to the desired position to enable him to operate it most effectively and inspect the work at the same time.
IVhile I have illustrated my invention with adjustable means for putting tension on the cable, I desire to remark that the device will be very effective without such adjusting means, although such adjusting means enables the taking up completely of any slack that may occur in the cable from any cause, and the adjusting means also enables the nice and proper setting of the operating wheel at the center of the machine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a initering machine, the combination of a table; a guide rail 2 supported by suitable brackets; a knife carriage 3 in suitable ways therein, arranged to carry a beveled knife; a journal 17 on the said carriage; a double -grooved actuating wheel notched at its periphery, carried on the journal 17; a cable 18 wrapped around the said wheel in the grooves thereof and secured thereto in a central position by a clip 19; eye-bolts 21 for adjustably securing the ends of said cable toward the opposite ends of the table; means for actuating the said wheel, consisting of a lever 6 journaled by a suitable casting 5 to the. outer end of the journal 17 g an adjustable catch surrounding the said lever and suitably guided thereon, a knob arranged at the end of said lever; a rod connecting the said knob to a cross-pin through the lever into the said catch; and a spring within the lever for holding the said rod and catch yieldingly toward said actuating wheel, all co-acting substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
2. In a mitering machine, the combination of a table; the guide rail 2 supported by suitable brackets; a knife carriage 3 in suitable ways Jtherein, arranged to carry a beveled knife; a journal 17 on the said carriage; a double grooved actuating wheel 5 notched at its periphery, carried on the journal 17; a cable 18 wrapped around the said wheel in the grooves thereof and secured thereto in a central position by a clip 19; eye-bolts 21 for adjustably securing the ends of said cable toward the opposite ends of the table; and means for actuating the said wheel, as specified.
3. In a mitering machine, the combination of a table; a guide rail 2 supported by suitable brackets; a knife carriage 3 in suitable ways therein, arranged to carry a beveled knife; a wheel with teeth on its periphery connected to drive said knife carriage; and means for actuating the said wheel, consisting of a lever 6 journaled by a suitable casting 5 to the outer end of the journal 17, an adjustable catch surrounding the said lever and suitably guided thereon, a knob arranged at the end of said lever, a rod connecting the said knob to a cross-pin through the lever into the said catch, and a spring within the lever for holding the said rod and catch yieldingly toward said actuating wheel, as specified.
