WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent,
application inea August 1o, 1909. 'serial No. 5i2,2os.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'l, (lizoiioi: il. \V.vrsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing `at tlarsliall,` in the county ot' Calhoun and Stateof Michigan, have invented certain new aiid useful Improvements in 'renches, of which the following is a specification.
f. My invention relates to an improvement in wrenches and the object is to provideP4 ineansfwhereby a movable jaw will be caused to engagea A'pipe diie to the'fact that it is' constantly forced forward.
'l`lie invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in theclaini.
In the accompanyingdrawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation; and Fig. 2 is `a top plan. i
lfrepresents the handle, which'is )r0- vided with a rigid jaw at its outer end as. at l and a movable jaw 2, preferably L- shape, is received through an op'enimr er slot, 3, in the handle. The shank 4 ofthe jaw 2 is provided with a series ofopen'ings or holes 5 whereby the jaw'ean be adjusted and held in position in theliandle bv a pin which passes throughthe handle and' through one of the o ierings i, in'the shank of the jaw 2. 'lhe )uws l and are both provided with gripping surfaces 7. 7. Logs S, 8 are formed on the handle and are provided witli openings` through which a rod 410 extends. A eoil spring 11 encireles the f v rod and one end of the spring bears against lngand the other cnil ol' the spring bears against a washer 12 on the rod, which is held by a pin 125 passing through the rod. "1`he pressure ol' the spring constantly forces the rod ontwiu'd so that it will constantly engage the shank 4 of the jaw L. 'lhe spring, however, will pei'init Vof the jaw being moved rearwardly to obtain :mother grip upon the pipe. ly the. tension of the spring the jawllie innermost will normally be pressed into engagement with the pipe. liy providing the movable rod, which -is use in v wrench on different size pi'pes without adjustment of the Jaw for thereasozi constantly moving or tending to force the movable jaw forward.
,It is evident that more or less slight changes might beresorted to in the' form and arangementi of the several )arts described without departing from tiespirit audscope ofiny invention7 hence I do not wis-hito limit m self' to the exact construction herein set Orth, but: A
Ilaviiin fully described my invention, what I e aiml as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:`
A wrench comprising a handle liavin a Jawformed on one end longitudintiily foi-nud therein, and -j openings formed through"the 'walls of the slot, an L-shaped jaw having a plurality of openings in its shank, axpin passing through the openings in the handle 'and an openingin thehiinlc foi: pivotall connecting the movable jaw to the haiiille', lugs on the' handle, a red slidi'ibly mounted vin the lugs having one end in engagement, with the shank of t'. movnble'jaw, n spring encircling the rod, one end bearing against the lug; and means on the rod for engaging the other end of the spring whereby the rod is held aggiinstthe jaw for constantly forcing the Jaw in a forward direetioin .A
In testimony whereofl atii: my signature, vin the presence of two witnesses H, lfTJViusoR.
A Patented Juiy 12, 19'10.
spring eontrolledlaiid having it constaiitly engaging the'niovable Jaw, I am enabled to that the movable rod acts as an adjuster in thereof, said handle having a transverse slot I 1 'GicoiiGE ii. Wit'rsoN.
