SHIELD FOR SPRINKLER-HEADS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 12, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK E. Orrrz and BENJAMIN F. CALDWELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Pomona, in the county of Los Angeles and State of Cali-- fornia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shields for Sprinkler- Heads; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments to sprinkler heads for directing the water away from a person desiring to approach the sprinkler head and forming a shield whereby the water, as it is sprayed from the perforations, may be directed in any desired direction.
Our invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
We illustrate our invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of our improved shield for attachment to sprinkler heads, and Fig. 2 is a sectional View longitudinally through the device showing the adjustment of the cylinder in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a slight modification of the shape of the sprinkler head.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a sprinkler head which is made in the form of an elongated loop having a late-rally eX- tending bulged portion B with series of perforations D formed therein through which water is adapted to be sprayed. Communicating with said loop is a branching pipe E having interior threads and adapted to be fastened to the coupling of a hose pipe. Said loop is provided with annular flanges H, and K designates a cylindrical shield, the ends of which are provided with apertures N for the reception of the cylindrical piping of which the loop is made, said pipe forming a journal bearing about which the cylinder is adapted to rotate. It will be noted that said cylinder has substantially half of its circumference cut away to allow the water to freely spray where the closed part of the cylinder does not come immediately in front of the perforations in the sprinkler head.
In operation, the cylindrical portion of the device is adapted to rest upon the ground and, in the event of it being desired for a person to approach the spray head for any purpose, such as to take hold of the sprinkler head, by rotating the cylinder so that the closed part of the cylinder will come adjacent to the perforations, the cylinder will act as a shield and prevent the spray from coming in contact with the person handling the sprinkler head. By the provision of the device, it will be noted that means is afforded whereby the direction of the spray may be regulated, that is to say, if a person desires to sprinkle over a certain surface, it may be done by the regulation of the shield relative to the perforations.
WVhat We claim to be new is 1. In combination with a hollow loop shaped sprinkler head, a cylindrical shield journaled thereon adapted to swing about the perforated portion of the sprinkler head.
2. In combination with a hollow loop shaped sprinkler head, a cylindrical shield journaled thereon adapted to swing about the perforated portion of the sprinkler head, a portion of the circumference of said cylinder being cut away.
8. In combination with a hollow loop shaped sprinkler head, a cylindrical shield journaled thereon adapted to swing about the perforated portion of the sprinkler head, flanges upon the sprinkler head adapted to bear against the outer faces of the ends of said cylinder.
