ELASTIC STOCKING, LEGGING, AND SIMILAR ARTICLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed July 28, 1909.
Patented July 12, 1910. Serial No. 509,711.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EBENEZER DIVER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residing at 35 Talbot road, Bournemouth, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic Stockings, Leggings, and Similar Articles for Supporting the Limbs or Extremities of the Body, and of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to support I or protect the extremities of the body when afliicted with varicose veins or weakness generally, by means of elastic appliances or devices which give the said extremities an intermittent pressure and thus imitate the natural support which the valves provide in normal or healthy veins.
The invention comprises a stocking, legging, or similar article preferably composed of fibrous material, woven or knit, and adapted to be drawn onto the limbs or extremities in the manner of a stocking, said article being provided with an elastic band which is passed around the same in the form of a spiral and is held in place by flexible strips secured to the said article longitudinally thereof in such manner as to form loops through which the elastic band is passed, the said strips being secured to the stocking, legging or other article at different points in such manner as to form loops which are also arranged in the form of a spiral around the said article.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a side view of a foot and a part of a leg with a stocking provided with my improvement thereon.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown the lower part of a leg and a stocking drawn thereonto, and in the practice of my invention, as shown in the drawing, I connect with the leg of the stocking a plurality of flexible strips a preferably composed of fibrous material and 'be readily understood any desired number of which may be employed and these strips a are secured to the stocking by stitchin or otherwise, as indicated at 'b to form %oops 0 through which is passed, in the form of a spiral, an elastic band d. The loops 0, formed by stitching or securing the strips a to the stocking are also arranged in the form of a spiral around the stocking and this may be done, as will by so connecting the strips with the stocking that the loops formed by one strip will be higher than those formed by the preceding strip, beginning at any desired point, and when the strips have been secured to the stocking in this manner, and the loops formed as described, the elastic band 0 is passed around the stocking and through said loops and the ends of said elastic band are secured to the stocking as at (Z in any desired manner, and this can be done by securing to said ends a piece "of canvas or other fibrous material. The elastic band cl may be made of rubber only, or may be made as elastic bands are sometimes made which employ fibrous material in their construction, all that is necessary in this connection being that the said band be sufficiently elastic so as to operate as desired. It will be understood that the band d may be of any desired width and any preferred thickness, and that the loops 0 formed by the strips a may also be of any desired size according to the dimensions of said band in transverse sections and said band may be drawn around the stocking as loosely or tightly as circumstances render necessary. My invention is also not limited to the exact means shown and described for connecting the elastic band to the stocking or other article in the form of a spiral and other means may be employed for this purpose.
IVhile I have shown my improvement applied to an ordinary stocking it will be apparent that the said invention may be applied to a legging, or to an article of any kind or class, woven or knit and adapted to be drawn on to the legs, over the feet, or on to the arms, over the hands.
Hzrving fully described my inventiomwhat l spiral, and an elastic band passed around I claim as new and desire to secure by Letsaid article through said loops and in the 10 ters Patent, is form of a spiral and the ends of which are A stocking, legging or like article prosecured to said article. 5 vided with a plurality of flexible stri 3s EBENEZER DIVER.
