FRIEDRICH WOHLGEMUTH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 96,373, dated November 2, 1869.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH VVOHLGE MU'lH, ot' the city and county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plane elevation of the cartridge when made up and ready for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the center of said cartridge; and Fig. 3 is a modification of the invention, of which Fig. 4 is an end view.
My invention consists of a cartridge, composed of a metallic case, made in two parts and charged with powder and ball or shot, as the case may require. The cartridge-case is made of brass in two transverse sections, the manor breech section being made to screw into the front or barrel section in the manner shown by Fig. 2. Instead, however, of screwing the breech end of the cartridge in the inside of the barrel it will perhaps be wellto make it to screw on the outside of the barrel,
making the female screw in the breech end instead of the barrel end.
The cartridge is made up by first putting the cap on the percussion bar or pin in the The case is then charged with powder and ball or shot, as the case may be,
the breech being first screwed into the barrel of-the case and the charge introduced into the nozzle.
Fig. 3 shows a cartridge made for a central fire, the cap A being introduced into the hole 3 in the end of the cartridge, which is otherwise constructed the same as that first above described. This cartridge is intended for breech-loading small-arms, and the advantages claimed for it are in its durability and in the facility with which it can be cleared of a detective charge or cap. The cases can be re loaded as often as the gunner chooses. I have fired as many as one hundred and fifty charges from one case without apparent injury, and in case the charge becomes damp or otherwise defective, or the cap misses fire, it is readily replaced by a new one, or the charge is readily punched out with a stick or rod by removing the breeclrpiece.
Having now described the nature and extent of my invention, I claim as new herein and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A metallic cartridge-shell, consisting of a plain parallel tube open from end to end, fitted with a screw-thread and a hollow screw breechpiece, as shown and described.
FRIEDRICH WOHLGEMUTH.
