Letters .Patent No. .96,346,.dated November 2, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it 'may concern'.-
Be it known that I, J. I). PRATT, of Cleveland, in the county 'of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed- Bottoms; and I do herebydeclare that the following is la full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a section of bcd-bottom.
Figure 2, an end view.
Y Like letters of reference different views.
'lhe nature of this invention relates to a device whereby the ends of the slats composing a hed-bottom are securedpt'o `each other, and, at the same time, con` refer to like parts in the tributing to the elasticity of the slats.
A B represent a section of a lpair of the slats comprising the bed-bottom, which are of the 'ordinary shape, length, Ste.`
The ends of the slats are connected to each other by a clamp', B'.4 I
Said clampv is constructed in two sections, C I), which are made to lclose upon each other, and interlock, as shown in fig-1*. y l
In said ligure, it will be observed that the upper section is formed with a square ring, E, Figure 2,1mder which the ends of the slats are inserted, as shown -in fig. 1. l
A nib, indicated b y dotted line a, penetrates the slats, and thereby prevents thern from working out.
The lower section of the clamp is interlocked with the upper section -by a hook, indicated by the dotted linesb, iig. 1. Y
Said hook engages a piu,lc, whereby it is supported, and prevented from becoming detached. The two sections are further secured, in their connectiou to each other, by rods F,. which pass through ghe division-line' of the two sections, us shown in It will be obvious, that by the introduction ot said rods, no movement of the two sections of the clamp upon each other can take place in direction of the Slat. Hence, wheu the two slats are compressed together bottom of the bed separate and distinct from each other, so that one or more Acan be removed andy replaced without disturbing the rest.
Arranged between the slats is a series of springs, H, which'mayvbe more or less in number, as the strength ofthe slats, or the weight thereon to be borne, may require.
The advantage derived trom connecting the slats by 'this manner of clamp is, that each slat is converted into-alever of the first order, the edge ot' the clamp, at x, acting as fulcrum, on which the slat rests, and the resistance, the; loop or ring, under 'which the extreme end is confined.
By this means, it will be obvious that all thc resiliency ofthe slats is secured to the bed, as the weight upon it at any point between the two fulcra, thougli it compresses the slats, cannot throw upward the end outside or beyond the fulcrum. flheretbre, as above said, all the strength and. spring of the slats are ob tained, making the bed-bottom much easier and elastic than the same would be were'theextreme ends ot' the slats not so contined, but allowed to spring upward while depressing the central part. Also, a less number of coiled springs H will be required tobc interposed between t-he slats. Hence the bed-bottom is not only much easier to lie upon, but is of considerable less expense in the manufacture.
That 1 claim as my inyention, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-'- Y The combination of the. section C, attached to ring orv loop E, and having ribs'a and pin c, section 1) having hook b, with the rodsll F, all constructed to opf erate in the manner. and t'or the purpose described.
