MASSAGE APPARATUS.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. KARPEN- STEIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Massage Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to massage apparatus, and more particularly to that of the pneumatic or suction type.
Its principal objects are to provide a siniple and eflicient apparatus which may be operated by iiuid pressure.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of my invention shown as attached to a bib or faucet; Fig. 2 is a central vertical section therethrough, taken in the plane of the air-pipe; Fig. 3 is an end elevation of said air-pipe; and Figs. t and 5 are transverse sectional details on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 showing the valve in place.
10 designates a body portion, in which is formed a longitudinal or fluid passage 11 which is contracted at its central portion 12, and into this contraction opens an air-passage 13, preferably of less diameter than the adjacent portion of the fluid-passage. The upper portion of the body may be threaded at 14e to receive a suitable increasing coupling 15 to enable the apparatus to be attached to a hose-bib; or this end 14 of the body may receive a flexible coupling 16, preferably of rubber, which adapts the apparatus to be mounted upon a straight bib A, such as is illustrated in F ig. 1 of the drawings.
The outer portion of the air-passage is enlarged and threaded at 17 to receive the threaded end of an air-pipe 18, the inward movement of which may be limited by a flange 19. The outer portion of the air-pipe is provided with an internal thread at 20, and into this is fitted a screw-plug 21 having a contracted opening 22 continuing the air-passage. Across the inner face of the plug is a slot 23 leading to the opening. The outer end of the pipe receives a shouldered screw-plug 24, preferably having the same external diameter as the pipe, through Specification of Letters Patent.

which is an opening 25. The outer eXtremity of the plug 2st is preferably rounded at 26 and has, extending transversely of it, a slot 27 which connects with the opening 25, furnishing an increased outlet and preventing it from becoming obstructed. Between the plugs 21 and 24 is left a chamber, in which operates a valve member or disk 2S of somewhat less diameter than said chamber, this disk conveniently consisting of a thin piece of metal or other material comparat-ively impervious to water. The airconduit is continued by a flexible pipe or hose 29, which is slipped over its extremity, the rounding of the plug 24 facilitating this. The outer end of the hose carries a massage implement, here shown as in the form of a cup 30.
The lower portion of the body about the outlet of the Huid-conduit is threaded at 31 to receive a discharge-pipe 32, which is preferably contracted by a partition 33 eX- tending part way across it, this lying upon the eduction side of the air-conduit.
One side of the body of the apparatus may carry a U-shaped holder or other clip 34 to support the massage implement when not in use, while upon the opposite side is shown a hook 35, by which the apparatus may be suspended when removed from the bib.
In use, the body of the apparatus having been attached to the source of water or other duid-pressure by means of the appropriate coupling, the flow is started, the iiuid passing through the conduit 11 and in its passage through the contracted portion induces a flow of air in the pipe 18. Vhen the ow from the bib is first inaugurated there may be a tendency for the iiuid to pass outwardly through the air-pipe, but this is prevented by the valve 28, which seats itself against the inner end of the plug 24, closing the opening. Then the iiow is fairly established, the inward draft or suction through the passage moves the valve against the plug 21, where it tends to somewhat throttle the flow, which passes by its edge through the slot and opening and is carried down the discharge-pipe with the water, the tendency to a back draft, which would break the suction, being prevented by the partition 33. The cup or other massage implement may now be passed over the skin, the suction operating in the ordinary way to stimulate the flow of blood to the surface.

Claim as new and desireV to secure by Letters Patent l. A massage apparatus Comprising a fluid-conduit, an air-conduit opening into said fluid-conduit, a valve in the air-conduit, and a massage implement Connected with the air-Conduit.
2. A massage apparatus comprising a fluid'eonduit, an air-conduit opening into said fluid-conduit, the fluid-conduit upon the eduction side of the air-conduit being contracted, a valve in the air-conduit, and a massage implement connected with the airconduit.
3. In a massage apparatus, a body portion through Which is a passage, a lateral passage opening into the rst named passage, plugs in the lateral passage through Which are openings, and a valve movable between the plugs.
4. In a massage apparatus, a body portion through which is a passage, a lateral passage opening into the first named passage, plugs in the lateral passage through which are openings, the inner plug having across its outer face a slot leading from the opening, and a valve movable between the plugs.
5. A massage apparatus comprising a body portion through Which is a passage, a lateral passage opening` into the irst named passage, a pipe leading from said first-named passage, a partit-ion partially Closing the pipe, and a massage implement connected with the lateral passage.
6. In a. massage apparatus, a body portion provided with al longitudinal passage having a contracted portion, and a lateral passage of less diameter than the contracted portion of the longitudinal passage and opening into the same, a valved pipe connected with the lateral passage, and a ilexible pipe connected with the pipe and carrying a eut at its end.
