To all whom tt may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE H. GARD- xER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Santa Barbara, in the county of Santa Barbara` and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Ledgers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to combined ledgers and filing systems for keeping accounts, and the principal ob]- ect of the same is to provide a device of the 'character described that is made in the form of a loose leaf ledger, each leaf thereof being provided with a plurality of pockets for the reception of charge slips, said pockets being transparent so that the charge slips may be readily inspected without removing the same from the pockets, means also being provided whereby said pocket may be normally sealed so that accidental displacement of the charge slips is prevented.

In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved loose leaf ledger, shown open. Fig. 2 is a similar view closed. Fig. 3 is a hori- Zontal sectional view of one of the leaves of the ledger. Fig. 4 is a similar, but enlarged view of a portion of one of the leaves. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the leaf pockets. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on line 6 6, Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of an index adapted for use with the improved ledger.

Referring to said drawings by numerals, 1-2 designate the cover pages of the improved ledger, each having a flexibly connected back strip 3 through which openings 4L are formed so that the leaves 5 may be detachably retained between said cover pages by the cord 6 or other suitable fastening means.

The leaves 5 are of duplicate construction, each having a stiff body 5a that is covered with the usual binding material 7 and provided with top, bottom, and outer edge protectors S. The rear edge ofeach leaf is embraced by the grooved edge 9 of a flexible strip 10, said strip 10 being provided with openings 11 corresponding to the openings 4 of the strips 3 of the cover pages 1 2 and through which the fastening means G pass.

Each leaf is provided with a plurality of flexible pockets l2, said pockets being preferably arranged in rows, and having a transparent outer face 13 so that their contents will be visible. Each pocket is provided with a number, and the leaves are provided with an outstanding index tab la numbered to correspond with the numbers of the pockets. In the example of the invention shown in the accompanying drawings, the leaves have both of their surfaces equipped with pockets, and obviously the index tabs 14 are numbered on both surfaces to correspond therewith. An edge protector 15 is placed over the upper edge of each transparent covering 13 at the open end of the pocket, said protector being equipped with a lifting tab 15a by means of which the pocket may bc expanded to facilitate the removal of the contents of the pocket and also to facilitate the placing of charge slips or the like therein.

A resilient band 16 of rubber or other suitable material is employed for normally sealing the pockets, preferably one band being used for each row on one surface of the leaf and the corresponding row on the opposite surface of the leaf. As suggested in the accompanying example of the invention, each surface is provided with three horizontal rows of pockets, and this arrangement necessitates the employment of three resilient bands. Said bands entirely surround each leaf and exert a `constant pressure upon the upper portion of the pockets so that normally they are kept sealed. The bands are fastened to the leaves between each pocket and adjacent the back strip, as indicated at 17 and 18.

The improved ledger is especially adapted for use in connection with systems of accounts wherein a duplicate charge slip for all sales is retained. In such systems each customer is given a number and has charge slips containing the amount of charge of last sales. This slip is put in the pocket assigned to that account with its charge items arranged so that they will be visible through the transparent face of the pocket, so that with future sales, the balance due may be noted on the next charge slip.

`In Fig. 7 an index page has been shown provided with an alphabetical index for the customers names and columns for the account number, said columns corresponding, of course, with tlie pocket number.

It will be obvious from the described nian-v ner of retaining the leaves between the covers, that others may be added thereto when necessary or desirable, and also that leaves .may be readily removed.

That I claim as my invention is l. A loose leaf system of filing accounts comprising a plurality of leaves arranged in book form, pockets carried by both surfaces of said leaves, said pockets being arranged in horizontal rows, and a resilient band for normally sealing the corresponding rows of each surface of said leaves.

A loose leaf system of tiling accounts comprising a plurality of leaves arranged in book form, pockets carried by both surfaces of each leaf, said pockets being arranged in horizontal rows and each having a transparent face so that their contents may be inspected, and resilient sealing means for each corresponding row of pockets on both surfaces of said leaves.

3. A loose leaf system of filing accounts comprising a plurality7 of leaves arranged in book form, pockets carried thereby, said pocket-s being arranged in corresponding l rows on both surfaces of each leaf, fiexible bands surrounding each leaf, said bands being arranged so that one of the same will normally seal the corresponding row of pockets of each page, and means for fastening said bands to said leaves.
