IMPROVEMENT IN OILCAN STOPPERS.

A Figure 2 isa vertical section of the same. Itis well known that' the use of cans and small vessels for distributing oils and other iuids has become very general within the last few years.

When these cans or small vessels are used, great diii' culty is' 'experienced in emptying them without spilling some of the contents, resulting plincipally from the fact that there has been no vent or conduit for admission of air to the can while the liquid is being poured out. To remedy this ditliculty, vent-nozzles or other like devices have heretofore been used with cans or' vessels, but such appliances have always been costly, and their use has been attended with inconvenience, whilethey require calls of special construction, and, iudced, are permanently united with and form part of the cans. v

M y object is to furnish a device of this kind, which is simple o f construction, and can be readily and cheaply made, which may be readily removed from or applied to ,the can, and used with any can 'of ordinary or suitable construction, and which may be manufactured and sold as a distinct article, and not neces- To this end,

My invention consists of a stopper for oil-cans or other liquid-holding vessels, (for whatever use,) provided with an opening or spout for ontiiow of the liquid, in combi. nation with a lvent for the passage of the air.

The mannelin which this device can be constructed and used will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings.

The stopper, there represented as closing the mouth of the can, is composed of the cork or other body n,

of suitable material, which carries the tube or spout b for outflow of the liquid, and the smaller tube or vent c. This device can therefore be `vapplied to or' removed from the vessel, as shownin the drawing, just as an ordinary stopper. y

The two tubes b c pass down through the cork and open into the interior of the vessel,'and the smaller or vent-tube is arranged upon on side ofV and so as to follow the'curve ot' the larger tube, and so that when the vessel is tipped to pour the liquid, the 'larger tube will be beneath, by which arrangement the oil or fluid vill tlow, only through the tube b, leaving the vent ree. Y

The tubes are' in this instance held to the cork by means of the metal disks d d, whichare` soldered to the tubes at such distance apart as to compress the .body of the cork petween them, the turned-up edges of the disks entering the cork andA holding it tightly. Instead of this construction, the tubes may beheld in other ways, and the body a of the devicey may be formed ofthe cork or of any other suitable material capable ot' closing the orifice in the can; and'it may'V even be of metal, which can be screwed into or upon the neck of the can.

In any event, however, a detachable stopper will be obtained, in which the spout or opening for outflow is combined with a vent, and this device can be appliedyto any can, vessel, or receptacle for liquids, wharf ever its shape or size, provided that suchreceptacle be provided with a neck or mouth, into whichthe stopper can be fitted.

Having now described my invention, and the manner in which the same is or maybe carried into effect,

What I clai'm, and desire 'to secure by Letters Patent, is l 1. A stopper for oil-cans, or other receptacles for liquids, provided with an opening or spoutl for outflow ot' the liquid, in combination with a vent-openingr tube, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination of the body of the stopper with the vent and outtlow-tubes, and the disks for holding the' body and tubes together, substantially as shown and set forth. y
