Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 1910.
Application filed June 1, 1909. Serial No. 499,532.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JACOB T. OLIPHANT and OLLIE RING, citizens of the United States, residing at Farmersburg, in the county of Sullivan and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tedder Attachments for Harvesters, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tedder attachments for harvesters, and the object of our invention is to provide a tedder attachment which is capable of being attached to any harvester, and which can be readily detached therefrom, the attachment being so constructed that while it can perform all the functions necessary, it in no way interferes with the action of the harvester, and which does not require any adjustment of the parts of the harvester when being attached thereto or detached therefrom.
\Yith these and other objects in view our invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, the preferred form of which will be first de scribed in connection with the accompanying drawings andthen the invention pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings wherein the same part is designated by the same reference numeral wherever it occurs Figure l is a top plan view of a portion of the mowing machine with our invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view of the device for fastening the attachment to the seat support.
1 designates the axle, 2, 2 the wheels, 3 the pole, l the seat and 5 the seat support secured in position by any suitable means as by the belts 4.0 of a mowing machine of any ordinary or desired construction.
In the form of invention shown, and as best appears from Fig. 3, the seat support 5 is secured to the central portion of the axle l, and this seat support is of the ordinary fiat metal plate construction.
The tedder attachment comprises a U- shaped frame 6 in the ends of which is journaled the crank shaft 7 having a plurality of cranks for the tedder forks 8.
9, 9 are a pair of braces extending from the back portion of the U frame 6, said bars being preferably formed integral with each other and connected together by the U shaped section 10, the portion 11 of which is rounded and journaled in a journal box 12, from which there extends out the yoke 13 having centrally located therein the setscrew 14. This yoke is adapted to surround the seat support 5. We preferably insert in the yoke between it and the seat support a bearing plate 4L1 against which the screw is adapted to bear so that by turning up the set screw clamps the journal box 12 tightly against the same.
15, 15 are a pair of bars extending back from the bars 9, and their ends 16 are provided with journals for the crank shaft 7 whereby additional bearings for this shaft are provided.
17 is a cross brace extending between the braces 9, 9.
18, 18 are a pair of links provided at one end with an eye 19, and at the other end with an eye 20, the eye 19 being adapted to slip over the end of the shaft 7 and the eye 20 over the ends of the axle 1, the braces being held in position by means of the cotter pins 21. It will be noted that the journal block 11 is supported in the plane of the axis 1, and that therefore the tedder frame may be raised and turned about the axle 1 as a center.
As a means for raising the tedder frame we have illustrated the lever 22, pivoted on the pole 3, said lever being provided with the ordinary latch 23 engaging a sector 2&.
25 are a pair of links extending from the U frame 6 to the lever 22.
From this construction it will be seen that by moving the lever 22 forward the tedder frame will be raised.
For the sake of illustration we have shown the tedder forks 8 as being formed of a bar 26 provided on its lower side with the eye 27 through which one of the cranks of the shaft '7 passes, said bar at its upper end being connected back to the U frame by means of the rods 28, whereby upon rotation of the crank shaft proper motion of the tedder forks will be given.
29 are the tedder forks which are shown as pivoted at 30 to the lower end of the bar 26.
31 is a coil spring connected at one end to the bar 26 and at the other end, by means of a connecting rod 32, to an arm 33 on the fork, so that should the forks come in contact with a stone or other obstacle or stick into the ground they will yield instead of being broken.
Mounted on the shaft 1 adjacent one end thereof is a sprocket wheel 3 L connected by a sprocket chain to a sprocket wheel 36 on the crank shaft 7, whereby the crank shaft is driven from the axle 1.
It is believed that the operation of our device will be obvious from the foregoing description.
WVe realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of our invention, and we therefore do not intend to limit ourselves to the specific form shown and described.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. The combination with a harvester having an axle and a seat support mounted on the axle, of a tedder attachment having a frame, a boxing in which the forward portion of the frame is journaled, a clamp carried by the boxing and engaging the seat support, a lever carried by the harvester and rods connecting the lever and tedder frame whereby the same may be raised and lowered.
2. A tedder attachment forharvesters secured thereto by bars, a boxing in which said journal is mounted, and means carried by the boxing whereby the same is adapted to be clamped to the seat support of a harvester.
3. The combination with a harvester having an axle and a seat support mounted on the axle, of a tedder attachment having a frame, a crank shaft mounted in the frame, tedder forks mounted on the crankshaft, a boxing in which the forward portion of the frame is journaled, a clamp carried by the boxing engaging the seat support,v a pair of rods having an eye in each end and connecting the ends of the crank shaft with the ends ofthe axle, a lever carried by the harvester and rods connecting the lever and tedder frame whereby the same may be raised and lowered.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB T. OLIPHANT.
OLLIE RING;
WVitnesses S. H. BIRLINGMIER, OLLOSvl/V. OLIPHANT.
