JACOB MITCHELL, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO MITCHELL SHOE-LINING COMPANY, OF ROYAL OAK, MICHIGAN.
COMBINATION SHOE QUARTER, LINING, PULL-STRAP, AND EXTENSION DOUBLE BACKSTAY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 1910.
Application filed March 15, 1909. Serial No. 483,555.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and use ful Combination Shoe Quarter, Lining, Pull-Strap, and. Extension Double Backstay, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is produced by joining the quarters and linings of shoes at the heel by means of a double back-stay. The backstay may be provided with a pull-strap.
In manufacturing shoes under former methods the quarters and linings were joined separately at the heel seam, later being combined.
My invention seeks to give an integral strength and unity to the entire heel seam of shoe quarters, and to the upper half or two-thirds of said quarters linings, leaving the lower half or third of the lining heeledge free from the back-stay for insertion of the counter, to be later covered by my heel-tab, designed to cover and protect the unattached lining heel-edges, and to act as an extension back-stay.
I achieve these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an inside View, in elevation, of my improvements, showing the lining heeledges turned upward; Fig. 2 shows Fig. l with linings in normal position and covered by heel-tab. Fig. 3 is an outside View, in elevation, of my improvements.
Referring, now, in detail to the drawing: In practice, the shoe- quarters 1, 1, come with the lining- halves 2, 2 stitched thereto along the upper edges, as at P, 1. In carrying out my invention, said quarters (with their accompanying lining-halves) are placed, one at a time, with the lining-half above, on a tape-stay 3, and stitched thereto, care being taken in stitching along the curved heeledge of the linings and quarters, to have said stitching follow straight lines on-said tape-stay 3, as described in the specification of my Patent, 912,398, dated Feb. 16,
1909. Immediately thereafter, a second, or inner, tape-stay 1 is placed over the heelseam on the quarters, directly above the lining-halves 2 2, and stitched to the quarters, the lining, and the stay 3. Adjacent the side edges l 1:, the lining- halves 2, 2, from the bottom thereof, are, for a suit-able distance, slit, as at 2 2", parallel to said side edges, whereby the linings, at the slit portions, may be folded back, as shown at 5, 5, Fig. 1, for the insertion of a counter.
In operating, I generally begin on the left quarter at the top and stitch it down, then begin on the right quarter at the bottom and stitch it up. Lastly, a heel-tab S is stitched, at 6, to the tape-stay 4 in such position as the heel requires. The heel-tab thus covers and protects the said slit portions of the lining, and subserves the function of an extension back-stay. The tape-stay 3 is, ordinarily, provided with a pull-strap 7, consisting merely of a loop stitched to the tape-stay, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The combination is now complete and the heelupper is ready for lasting to the sole.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
The combination with two shoe-quarters carrying linings, of an outer tape-stay disposed over the meeting edges of said quarters, and to which tape-stay said quarters with their linings are stitched, an inner tape-stay disposed over the meeting edges of said linings and stitched thereto, to the quarters, and to the outer tape-stay, said linings, from the bottom thereof, being slit parallel to the side edges of said inner tapestay, whereby the linings, at the slit portions, may be folded back for the insertion of a counter, and a heel-tab disposed over said free lower corners of the slit portions of the linings and secured to the inner tapestay.
JACOB MITCHELL.
