COMBINED GAS AND COAL RANGE.
Application filed December 11, 1908.
' To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, CLARENCE V. Romi'rs and JOHN MANDER, citizens of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Combined Gas and Coal Ranges, of which the following is a specilication.
At the price at which gas is furnished in most communities it is as economical as coal for cooking purposes at all seasons of the year, and for heating water at all times eX- cept during the winter season, but it canno-t be relied upon for heating the kitchen during the winter months or for maintaining an adequate supply of hot water at such time.
The object of our invention has therefore been to provide a range equipped with full facilities for cooking by means of gas and also having a coal fire pot which is not designed primarily for cooking purposes but for the purpose of heating the kitchen and maintaining a supply of hot water, the range being also, by preference, provided with means whereby the water can be heated by gas at all times except when it is necessary to maintain a coal fire.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a plan or top view of a combined coal and gas range constructed in accordance with our invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sect-ion of the same on the line a-a, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 5 2), Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a plan or tow View of the base member of the fire pot structure of the range.
The gas range member of our combined structure may be of any accepted form, that shown in the present instance having four burners 1, 2, 3 and t, an oven 5 and an oven burner 6. At one side of the gas range member is a fire pot 7 for the use of coal, this lire pot, being, by preference, provided with a closed top or dome 9, a fuel supply chute 10 and an outlet 11 for the escape of the products of combustion, this outlet communicating with a smoke pipe 12 at the back of the range.
By closing the top of the fire pot and providing a fuel supply chute at the front of the same there is no likelihood of the fuel being piled so high in the fire pot as to obstruct the outlet 11, since the natural tendency is to keep the level of the fuel below Speccation of Letters Patent. Patented June 21, 1910.

the level of the feed chute which may be in line with or below the level of the outlet passage.
Around the top of the re pot is a water heating chamber 13 which communicates, through a pipe 14, with the lower portion of a water reservoir 15, that shown in the present instance being of the elevated horizontal type although any desired type of water reservoir may be used in connection with the range.
The water heating chamber 13 communicates, through a pipe 16, with a water heating coil 17, located in the rear of the lire pot and above a gas burner 19, whereby the coil is heated when the coal fire pot is not in use, the coil being in communication with the upper portion of the reservoir 15 through a pipe 20, whereby the same circulating system contains both the fire pot heating chamber 13 and the gas-heated coil 17, and one set of water connections suiices for both.
The water heating coil 17 is preferably located below the top plate of the range, the entire area of the latter being, therefore, available for the reception of cooking utensils, and the waste heat of the burner 19 being also available for cooking purposes, if desired, when the water coil 17 is being heated by gas.
In the drawing we have shown the outlet pipe 11 for the products of combustion from the lire pot 7, as located below the gas burner 19, but neither this nor the closing of the top of the fire-pot are essential to our invention, although preferred.
When the fire pot is closed at the top, the lire brick blocks 21, which line the fire pot, cannot be introduced from above without removing the upper portion of the ire pot casing which would necessitate the breaking of the water connections with the heating chamber 13, consequently we permit of the introduction of the blocks from the base member 22 unt-il the final section hasy been inserted, whereupon the removable section 22a can be adjusted to position and suitably secured,
A convenient means of effecting the insertion and removal of the detachable section 22a of the base member of the fire pot is to provide it With a pivot lug 23 at each inner corner, these pivot lugs, when the section is in a vertical position, being applied to the adjoining fixed portions of the base member Whose inner flange has portions removed for the purpose, the section 22a being then swung up into horizontal position, and secured in such position by any suitable means, as for instance by transverse bolts 24 passing through lugs 25 formed on the fixed and movable members. Any desired form of grate structure may be used in connection with the fire pot.
The casing 7 of the fire pot is exposed on all sides to the circulation of air in order to provide an eiicient air heater and as all of the products of combustion from the fire pot must escape over the Water-heating ring 13 at the top of the same, an equally eliicient means of heating Water is also provided.
The air to be heated may enter the chamber surrounding the firepot through any suitable openings in the outer casing of the range, the heated air escaping into the room or apartment through the openings in the top plate of the range.
We claim l. The combination of a gas range having an air and Water heating coal fire pot disposed in an air heating chamber Which surrounds said re pot, With a gas-heated Water coil separate from but having connection With the Water heater of the coal iire pot.
2. The combination of a gas range having a combined air and Water heating coal fire potdisposed in an air heating chamber Which surrounds said lire pot, a gas-heated Water coil separate from but communicating With the Water heater of the lire pot, and a reservoir communicating both With said water heater of the fire pot and With the gas-heated -Water coil.
3. The combination of a gas range, having an air and Water heat-ing coal lire pot disposed in an air heating chamber Which surrounds said fire pot, and a gas-heated Waterl coil separate from but connected to the Water heater of the coal fire pot and disposed benea'ththe ytop plate of the range but at a higher level than the Water heater of the coal fire pot.
4. The combination of a gas range having a coal'fire pot with a smoke outlet, and a gas-heated Water coil disposed below the top plate of the range but above the smoke outlet from the coal fire pot, whereby the heat radiated from said smoke outlet acts upon the Water coil.
In testimony whereof, We have signed our names to this specification, in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
