or macadam road in contradistinction to ai road having a block pavement ot' either wood or stone, and the object thereof is the laying of the dust and preventing an accumulation or making of appreciable mud in wet weather.
My invention is also an improvement on the road oiler apparatus shown and described in my copending application Serial No. 472419, tiled January th, 1902), and
duly allowed May 8th, 1909, in which apparatus the delivery of the oil or the mixture of the same with a predetermined quantity of steam was etiected through a series of apertures provided in the lower portion of a delivery pipe employed for this purpose, whereas in the present case the invention relates particularly to the oil delivery member which is so constructed as to deliver the' o1l or a mixture ot' the same with steam 1n a thin sheet, this oil delivery member being provided with means whereby the width of the slot through which the oil is ejected may be varied at the pleasure of the operator, to determine the thickness ot' the sheet of oil delivered.
In carrying out my invention, employ a tank and an auxiliary receptacle, together with a reservoir from which the oil is adapted to be delivered in sheet t'orm upon the surface to be treated, means for connecting thel tank to the auxiliary receptacle and means for conveying the oil from the auxiliary receptacle to the delivery reservoir and for regulating the dist ribntion of the same in the latter, means for heating the oil in th, auxiliary receptacle and also for conveying the heat from the auxiliary receptacle to theI delivery receptacle and for heatiiig the oil in the latter, and means for varying` the size ot the opening in the delivery receptacle through which the oil is ejected theretrom, all of which will be hereinafter more part cularly described.

Referringparticularly to the drawing, 1() designates a tank or receptacle adapted to receive the. oil to be employed and in which the same is stored.
11 designates an auxiliary pipe or receptacle and 12 a pipe connecting the tank 10 and the auxiliary receptacle 11, and 13 a valve which is placed in the pipe 12.
14: designates a delivery reservoir and 15 represents a series of pipes, any convenient number of which may be employed and each one ot which extends between and connects the auxiliary receptacle 11 with the delivery reservoir 14, and furthermore each of the pipes 15 is provided with a valve 1G by means of which, as will be apparent, the amount of oil flowing from the auxiliary receptacle 11 to the delivery reservoir 14 may be determined and also its distribution may be regulated.
Except for the construction of the delivery reservoir, the parts hereinbefore described, are similar to those shown and described in my application aforesaid, and as is also shown and described in said application, l pre'l'er to employ a steam pipe 1T extending entirely throughout the length ot' the auxiliary receptacle 11 and heilig contained therein and a steam pipe 18 passing` through one end-ol thedelivery reservoir14 and extending throughout the length of the same and being connected to the steam pipe 17 by a pipe 19 or otherwise, and the steam pipe 18 within the delivery reservoir 1-1 is provided with a series of aperturesl Q0 through which the steam is ejected and permitted to commingle with the oil, the mixture of which is delivered from the reservoir 14 to accomplish the purpose of this apparatus.
Now the particular feature. to which the present 'invention relates as herein stated, comprises the delivery reservoir 1l and in constructing the same, I prefer to'employ a channel iron 21 which is ei'nployed in an inverted posit-ion and forms the top member of this delivery reservoir, the sides of which are preferably made ot sheet metal indicated respectively at Q2, 23. the edges of the said depending portions of the channel`ir`on to a point adjacent to their lower edges at which an 'elongated opening is provided between them preferably in such a manner as to be parallel sided and through which the oil or a mixture of the same with steam is ejected, this delivery opening being indicated at 25.
At the extremities of the delivery reservoir there are end members 26, 27, which are secured in position to the channel iron 2l by means of bolts 28 or otherwise.
29 designates a bar which extends between the end members 26, 27, and is secured 'thereto and also to the lower edge of the side member or apron 22, and 30 designates a bar which extends between the end members 26, 2T, and is not secured thereto but is secured to the lower portion of the side member or apron 23.
As will be seen by particular reference to Figs. 2 and 3, the end members 26, 27, are provided with projecting portions indicated at 35 and extending between these projecting portions 35 and secured thereto, is a bar indicated at 3l. Passing through and .engaging the bar 3l I employ a plurality of adjusting bolts 32 and at its inner end each of these adjusting bolts is provided with an annular recess 33. This recessed portion of each bolt 32 is passed into an aperture provided therefor' in thebar 30 and in alinement with the bolt hole in the bar Y31 and for each adjusting bolt 32, the bar 30 in its lower portion is provided with a screw 34 provided with a reduced end or pin 36 which latter extends into the annular recess 33 provided in the bolt, and as will be apparent, the turning of the Jesper-.tive bolts 32 will cause a movement of the bar `3() and a corresponding movement of the lower portion Dit' the movable side member or apron 23 and will effect aucorresponding adjustment of 'the sides of the slot 25 through which the oilI or vided with a mixture of the same and steam is delivered.
It will be understood that I do not limit myself to the hereinbefore described means or'adjusting the size of this festly there are numerous other constructions lfor accomplishing this purpose. For instance, as is shown inF it, the end of each adjusting bolt may be reduced as indicated at 3T, this reduced portion oi the passed through an aperture provided therefor in .the bar 30 with the shoulder formed by the reduced portion abutting against the outer face ot' the bar 30. In this instance the inner face ot' the b ar 30 is proa. series of recesses 38, each of which is concentric with an aperture provided for the reduced end of an adjusting bolt and is adapted to receive a washer 39 lbers, a. fixed side slot, a bar fixed in the said 'end slot, as mani-- which is secured therein by turning the end ot` the reduced portion 37 down against the washer or otherwise, this washer as will. be apparent,.being placed between the adjacent surface of the lower portion of the apron 23 and the bar 30 and lying wholly within the recess 38 provided therefor in the bar 30. In this instance as will also be understood, the size of the delivery slot is decreased by the shoulders on thebolts 32 forcing the bar 30 from right to left as shown in Fig'. 4, and the size of the slot increased by the washers 39 or other member bearing against the faces of the recesses 38 and moving the bar 30 in the other direction when the bolts are turned the other way.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a road oiling device, aI delivery reservoir, comprising a cover, end members, side members having converging upper parts and straight parallel lower parts, the latter terminating in spaced apart parallel edge portions an'd means for varying ythe distance between the said spaced apart parallel edge i portions of the said side members.
2. In a road oiling device, a delivery reservoir comprising a top member, end members, a vfixed side member, a movable sidev member, said side members converging downwardly and terminating in `parallel sided edge portions which are spaced apart to provide a delivery slot, and means for adjusting the position of the said movable side member relatively to that of the said fixed side member to vary the size of the slot between the said parallel sided edge portions thereof. f.
3. In a road oiling device, a delivery reservoir comprising a top member, end memmember, a movable side member, the said side members converging downwardly to parallel sided edge portions which are spaced apart to provide a delivery members, a bar secured to the lower portion of the said movable side member, adjusting bolts operating in the said bar which is fixed in the said end members said bar .secured to the. said movable sidel member and means engaging the ends of the said adjusting bolts within the last aforesaid bar, whereby the same is moved by turning the said adjusting bolts-to vary the position of the said movable side member relatively to that of the said fixed side member to determine the width of the slot between the said parallel sided portions of the said` side members.
