LIFTING-JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented June 21, 1910.
Application filed. January 26, 1907, Serial No. 354,281. Renewed June 1'7, 1908. Serial No. 439,042.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARLTON A. PAISLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winfield, in the county of Henry and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in lifting jacks for buggies and wagons, the primary object being to provide a simple and inexpensive jack composed of a minimum number of parts, strongly constructed and not liable to get out of order, and it consists mainly in a standard or up-right together with a segment pivotally connected therewith, said segment having a lever for manipulating and oscillating it and provided with a set of ratchet teeth in connection with a strong dog or pawl secured at one end to the post or elsewhere in convenient position with its free end engaging the ratchet teeth whereby to automatically lock the oscillating segment in position as the latter is raised beneath the vehicle aXle.
My invention still further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure l is a view in side elevation of my improved lifting jack. Fig. 2 is a view in rear elevation.
A, represents a standard or upright erected from a suitable base 1, the post being preferably divided at the upper end. An oscillating head or segment B is pivotally supported in the divided upper end of the post by means of a pin 2, upon which it turns or oscillates. A nose 3 at one end is adapted to take under the axle of the vehicle and the oscillating head or segment is rocked by means of the hand lever 4, located at an opposite point from the nose and in position to be grasped and manipulated by the operator.
The side of the oscillating head or segment adjacent to the hand lever is provided with upwardly extending ratchet teeth 5, 5, and a spring dog or pawl 6, secured to the post in any convenient position as for instance, on the base, is adapted to automatically engage the ratchet teeth 5, 5, as the oscillating head or segment is rocked whereby to lock the latter in the desired posit-ion.
The pawl may be provided with a button or loop 7, to facilitate removing it from the teeth when it is desired to disengage the dog or pawl from the oscillating head or segment.
These constitute the main features of my invention, the elements being few, simple and substantial and not likely to get out of order, and if they should, capable of being easily replaced. The lifting jack may be made of wood or metal as desired.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my inven tion, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A lifting jack comprising a standard bifurcated at the top, a head pivoted in said bifurcation comprising a lifting bar having a handle at one end, a parallel brace bar, an arch brace so formed in connection with the lifting bar that power applied to the handle will affect said lifting bar directly and through the arch brace, and means for looking said bar in different positions.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the'presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARLTON A. PAISLEY.
Witnesses A. S. FoLonR, W. B. RIDGEWAY.
