To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VITO E. DUnso, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing- Machine Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates especially to an attachment for sewing machines designed to provide an effective carrier for a plurality of interchangeable needles, and a plurality of carriers for thread or silk of different colors, particularly for use in embroidery.

To attain the desired end, my invention consists in certain novel and useful combinations or arrangements of parts and peculiarities of construction and operation, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a sewing machine head wherewith my attachment is employed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the attachment, removed from the machine. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the central portion of the device shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan View thereof. Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan view of a needle holder, and Fi 6 is a reversed plan view thereof. Fig. is a sectional view of the needle holder at line a-a of Fig. 5, and Fig. 8 is a like view at line c-c of the same figure. Fig. 9 is a vertical, sectional view at line -b of Fig. 3. Fig. 10 is an enlarged sectional view of one of the spool holders.

Similar numerals of reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

1 is the front of a sewing machine head.

2 is the needle bar, and 3 the presser foot bar with the usual lifter 4.

5 is the presser-foot, provided with a horizontal plate 6 wherein is rotatably mounted a hub 7 carrying a disk 8 provided with notches 9 therein, adapted to engage a 1inger 10 for properly locating the parts when the device is in use.

2O is a screw in the hub 7.

11 is a washer, and 12 is a plate constituting a carrier, and from which the hub 7 extends.

13 are radial arms carried by the plate 12, said arms being bent at right angle at 14 and 15, and carrying spool holders 16 at their outer extremities. Each arm 13 is provided with a pair of spring arms 17 adapted to removably hold in place a needle clamp 18, each of said clamps carrying a needle 19.

When constructed and arranged in accordance with the foregoing description, and attached to the foot-bar of a sewing machine, the operation of my device is as follows: Each of the spool holders carries a thread or silk of a different color, said thread being carried to the needle eye, as particularly illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawing.l When it is desired to use any particular thread, the arm carrying such thread is swung to the proper position and the needle carrying thatthread, with its clamp 18 is secured to the needle-bar 2, and the clamp released from the spring-arm 17, when the machine is ready to operate. To change to another color the first needle-clamp and needle, is released from the needle-bar, and replaced in the spring-arms, and the desired needle and thread employed, as before explained. It will thus be seen that a variety of colors of thread may be quickly and easily employed without the necessity of rethreading the needle for each color, and a large amount of work turned out in a very expeditious manner.

I have shown one method of employing a plurality of needles and thread holders in a sewing machine, but it is obvious the mechanical details may be greatly varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A sewing machine attachment in which is comprised a support ada ted to be secured to the presser foot of a sewlng machine, horizontally rotatable arms carried by said support, and a removable needle-carrier mounted upon each of said arms, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination with the presser foot and needle bar of a sewing machine, of a horizontally rotatable carrier provided with arms for a plurality of thread holders, a plurality of thread holders, and a plurality of removable needle carriers connected to the arms of the horizontally rotatable carrier, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a sewing machine attachment, the combination with the presser foot of a sewing machine, of a carrier for a plurality of horizontally rotatable arms mounted thereon, spring clasps secured to said arms, removable needle clamps held by said spring clasps, needles carried by the needle clamps, and a plurality of thread carriers mounted on the horizontally rotatable arms, substantially as shown and described.

4f. In a device of the character herein specified, the combination With the presser-foot 10 of a plurality of movable arms carried by said presser-foot, spring clasps mounted on said arms, and removable needle-carriers adapted to be held by said spring-clasps, substantially as shown and described.
