PUZZLE.

To all ywhom .it may concern:

Be it known that 1, NELLIE E. PECK, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Flushing, borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Queens, State of New York, executrix of the last will and testament of EDWARD M. Prox, late a citizen of the United States, deceased, am in possession of a new and useful invention made by the said ED- WARD M. Prox before his death, and consisting of an Improvement in Puzzles, and of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention consists of a puzzle which is extremely difficult of solution but the solution of which may be accomplished by the exercise of care, skill and ingenuity, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of said invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the said invention with the cover removed; and, Fig. 2 a section on the line 3,-3 of Fig. 1.

The invention comprises a square box a of any preferred size and said box contains fifteen square blocks b which exactly fill the box except one corner space 0 which is of the same size as one of the blocks b. The blocks b are all preferably square and all of the same size and said blocks are designated by numerals, said numerals being placed on the top surfaces or faces of said blocks, two of said blocks being designated by or provided with the numeral 3; three with the numeral 4; one with the numeral 5; four with the numeral 7 four with the numeral 8; and one with the numeral 9. The top edges of the blocks b are also preferably beveled as shown at b2 so as to facilitate the movement thereof as hereinafter described, and when placed in the box they form two sets of four parallel rows each and which cross each other in opposite directions, one row of each set adjacent to a side of the box containing three blocks each, while all of the other rows contain four blocks each. It will also be seen that there are two main diagonal rows of blocks d and Z2 extending from one corner of the bo'x to the diagonal opposite corner and one of these main diagonal rows contain Specification of Letters Patent.

'In' practice the blocks b are placed indiscrimlnately in the box and entirely fill said b ox except the vacant space'o, and the solutlon of the puzzle consists in moving the blocks with the thumb and finger or fingers and without taking the blocks out of the box into the position shown in Fig. 1 in which the sum 0f thenumbers on said blocks in each of the parallel rows counting in either direction and in each of the main diagonal rows will be twenty-three. This solution is one which is extremely diiicult and it is probable that the only practical way of accomplishing the4 said solution is by first working out the various combinations on a sheet of paper, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus forming what may be called a key, and then proceeding by moving the blocks in the manner described into the position indicated by the key. rIhe solution of the puzzle even by this method can only be accomplished by the exercise of care, skill, patience and judgment in the manipulation of the blocks or the movement thereof.

Having fully described the invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. A puzzle comprising a square box containing fifteen square blocks which are adapted to be arranged in said box in rows which cross each other in opposite directions and so as to exactly ill said box except for one corner space the size of one of said blocks,'said blocks beingeach designated by a number and being adapted to be arranged in said box so that the sum of said numbers in each of the rows which cross each other in opposite directions and each of the main diagonal rows will be twenty three.

2. A puzzle comprising a square box containing fifteen square blocks, which are adapted to be arranged in said box in rows which cross each other in opposite directions and so as to exactly fill said box except for one corner space, the size of one of said blocks, said blocks being designated by rows as follows,-tw'o by the numeral 3; three by the numeral 4; one by the numeral 5; four by the numeral 7 four by the numeral S, and one by the numeral 9; and said blocks being adapted to be arranged in said box so that the sum of said numerals in each of the rows which cross each other inopposite' directions the subscribing Witnesses this 23rd day of and each of the main diagonal rows Will be September 1909.
