To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I CARL E. MERRILL, a
citizen of the United ing upon said brush a suitable scouring or polishing powder at certain definite intervals of time. In order to accomplish this result, I arrange within the casing which contains the brush and the plug to be polished a powder holding box mounted upon an arm connected with the same shaft which supports and causes rotation of the brush, said powder holder being revolved in a vertical plane, and being provided with an opening through which powder can fall upon the brush while the holder is inverted, the said opening and the brush always maintaining the same relation. I have also improved the means for adjusting the position of the brush with respect to the device to be polished.
With these objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing forming a part f this specification: Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device. Fig. 2 is an irregular section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In these drawings 1 represents the sectional casing provided ,with the circular rack 2 and a holder 3 for the brass plu t or other device to be polished, and provided upon the side opposite said holder 3 with a driven shaft 5 which shaft is provided with a drive pulley 6 or which may be operated by .hand if desired, and as shown in the patent above referred to. A curved arm 7 extends from the inner end of the shaft 5 and supports a shaft 8 which at its inner end carrles a sleeve 9 slidably keyed to the shaft 8, and at its outer end the said shaft is provided with a beveled gear 10 which engages the circular. rack 2, and as the arm 7 revolves the gear 10 is caused to travel over the track, thus rotating the shaft 8.
All of the above parts with the exception of the pulley 6 are fully shown and described in detail in the patent hereinbefore mentioned.
Held upon the sleeve 9 by a circular nut 11 is a brush 12 also circular in form, the bristles being removed from the central part in order that the nut 11 may engage the brush back. To provide this brush with a suitable polishing substance, which is preferably in the form of a powder, I provide a second curved arm 13 also carried by the shaft 5 and arranged diametrically opposite the arm 7. Fastened upon the inner end portion of this arm13 is a can 14; provided at its inner end with an opening 15 which is always turned toward the face of the brush 12. I also pivot to the arm 7 an angled lever 16 one end of which loosely engages the sleeve 9, and the other end of which rests in a suitable recess formed in the side of'a nut 17 mounted upon the threaded inner end of an adjusting rod 18 which passes longitudinally through the shaft 5. This is a slight change from the construction shown in the patent above mentioned in which the nut and lever were integral, and by means of the present construction the parts can be more easily placed in position, more cheaply manufactured and more readily repaired. v
The brush having been properly adjusted by means of the adjusting rod 18 the shaft 5 is rotated and through the arm 7 and the shaft 8 the brush is also rotated and at the same time is caused to revolve about the plug 4:. The can 14 also revolves about the brush, but since the revolution of the brush and the can are uniform, the can always maintains a fixed relation with the brush bristles. During each revolution as the can is inverted a portion of the powder contained in the can is deposited upon. the

What I claim is:

A device of the kind described comprising a holder for an article to be polished, a brush, means for simultaneously rotating said brush and revolving it about said article, and a powder receptacle revolving holder discharging a portion of its contents in a fixed position With respect to the brush. upon the brush when in an inverted position,
