To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER C. GARLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the count-y of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Box-Covering and Corner-Staying Machines, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings forming a part of the same, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of a part of the machine showing the mechanism for feeding, cutting oil and applying the stay strips to the covering machine, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on line 33, Fig. 2.
Similar reference figures refer to similar parts in the different views.
My present invention relates to an improvement in the box covering and corner staying machine shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 742,343, issued October 27, 1903 to Thomas Morgan. In the machine described in the above named patent, the covering strip of paper is conducted from a pasting roll to a box held upon a rotating box-form and the strips for staying the corners of the box are stuck to the gummed side of the covering strip in proper position to register with the corners of the box as the covering strip is wound thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide means in this class of covering and staying machines by which the stay strip will be securely attached to the gummed side of the covering strip, and it consists broadly in employing upon opposite sides of the covering strip two pressing members acting conjointly to press the stay strip against the covering strip to cause the two to adhere, and in the detailed construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings 1 denotes the supporting framework, 2 a coil of covering paper, 3 a coil of stay strip paper, 4 a rotating box-form, 5 a gumming roll by which adhesive material is applied to one side of the covering strip. The covering strip (3 is taken from the coil 2 over the ginnming roll 5 beneath rolls 7 and 8, over rolls 9 and 10 and beneath roll 11 to the box 12 carried on the rotating boxform 4. The stay strip 13 is taken from the coil 3 between a pair of feed rolls 14 and 15 to a cutting mechanism consisting of a fixed shear blade 16 and a reciprocating shear blade 17, by which the individual stay strips are cut from the end of the continuous stay strip 13.
One end of the covering strip 6 is attached to a box 12 carried on the rotating box-form 4, and as the covering strip is drawn forward by the rotation of the box-form an intermittent motion is given to the feed rolls 14 and 15 by means of pins 19 carried by the boxform and arranged at the proper period to strike a swinging lever 20 which, by means of a pull rod 21 rocks a bell crank 22 in one direction, carrying on one of its arms a sector 23. The bell crank and sector are reversed by a spring 24 and the reciprocating motion of the sector, by means of a pawl and ratchet mechanism, imparts an intermittent motion in one direction to the feed rolls 14 and 15 at the proper period of time to move the stay strip 13 forward a sufficient distance beyond the cutting edge of the fixed blade 16 to form the stay strip. The reciprocating bell crank 22 is attached to a rocking shaft 25 which carries radial arms 26, 26, on the ends of which is supported the reciprocating shear blade 17 which in its upward movement not only serves to sever the continuous stay strip 13, but also to carry the detached stay piece upward against the gummed surface of the covering strip 6.
The construction and operation of the several parts above described are the same as the corresponding parts in the machine described in Patent No. 742,343 above referred to and form no part of my present invention which relates solely to means for applying sufficient pressure to the stay piece 13 to cause its adherence to the gummed surface of the covering strip 6. I accomplish this object by means of a presser bar 28 having its under surface preferably lined with a yielding material 29, such as felt or rubber.
The presser bar 28 is carried upon the ends of arms 30, 30, which are capable of a slight rocking motion on a fixed shaft 31 held in the framework of the machine, and preferably provided with check nuts 32 on its ends to allow the shaft 31 to be rotatively adjusted in the framework. A torsional spring 33 having one end attached t0116 theshaft 31 and its opposite end attached to one of the rocking arms 30 serves to exert a downward pressure upon the presser bar 28, the downward movement of the bar 28 being limited by a stop 34 adjustably attached to the shaft 31 and overlapping one of the arms 30. In the normal position of the presser bar 28 its yielding face 29 bears against the covering strip 6 as it passes from the roll 7 to the roll 8. As the bell crank 22 is reversed by the action of the spiral spring 24 when one of the pins 19 leaves the lever 20 the reciprocating blade 17 is moved upward with a quick and forcible blow, severing the stay piece 13 and carrying it against the gummed surface of the covering strip 6, the force of the blow being received by the presser bar 28 which is capable of yielding against the tension of the torsional spring 33, thereby gradually resisting the force of the blow imparted by the reciprocating cutting blade 17, and causing sufficient pressure to be imparted to the gummed covering strip 6 and stay piece 13 to cause the two to become firmly united. As the covering strip 6 is drawn forward by the rotation of the box-form, the stay piece 13, now firmly attached to the gummed surface of the covering strip 6 in proper position to register with one of the corners of the box 12, is carried forward with the covering strip. The forward movement of the covering strip is then continued, the upper surface of the reciprocating shear blade being provided with a series of ribs 35 having their ends rounded to prevent the scraping of the adhesive material, until at the proper period in the rotation of the box-form another pin is brought into contact with the swinging lever 20 and the operation of severing another stay piece takes place which is attached in the same manner to the gummed surface of the covering strip 6 in proper position to register with the next succeeding corner of the box 12. A stop pin 36 is placed in the framework in the path of the rocking bell crank 22 to limit the upward movement of the reciprocating shear blade 17 or any other suitable means may be employed for the purpose. The adjustment of the shaft 31 in the framework by the nuts 32 enables the force of the torsional spring 33 to be varied.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for feeding an adhesive covering strip to a box, of means for attaching a stay piece to saidcovering strip, comprising a movable pressing member, a fixed shaft, a rocking arm mounted on said fixed shaft, a presser bar carried by said arm, means for exerting a yielding pressure upon said presser bar, and means for holding said presser bar in a fixed plane against said yielding pressure.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with means for feeding an adhesive covering strip to a box, of means for attaching a stay piece to said covering strip, comprising a movable pressing member, a fixed shaft, a rocking arm mounted on said shaft, a presser bar carried by said arm, means for supporting a covering strip in a fixed plane, means for exerting a yielding pressure upon said presser bar, and a stop attached to said shaft in contact with said arm for holding said presser bar in said fixed plane.
