To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK F. BREII-IAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bartlett, in the county of IVilliamson, State of Texas, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Supplementary Vehicle-Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to supplementary seats for vehicles, such as buggies, for instance, which are supplied with one fixed seat that is constructed to accommodate two persons comfortably, the supplementary or auxiliary seat being disposed between the two persons on the main seat, and preferably slightly above and forward of the same, though this arrangement is not essential.

It is the purpose of my invention to provide improvements in means of the kind specified that will render the supplemental seat strong and durable, simplify its construction, so as to make it easy and economical of manufacture, and at the same time render it easy of attachment and detachment to the main buggy seat.

The annexed drawings form a part of this specification, and represent the preferred embodiment of my invention, though it is understood that changes or modifications of a mechanical nature may be made in the invention without departing from the general nature or spirit thereof.

Of the said drawings, Figure l is a side view of the seat supporting rod. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the lower portion of the invention connected with the front board of the main seat and bottom of the buggy, some of the parts being represented in elevation. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a slight modification.

Similar characters of reference designate similar parts or features wherever they occur.

In the drawings, 1 designates the body of the buggy which may be of usual form, and is provided with the usual seat 2.

3 designates the supplemental seat for the accommodation of a person, which latter seat is disposed midway of the seat 2 and in front of the latter. The said seat 2 may be constructed of two plies of wood, the grain of one ply running transversely of the other,

so that it will not split when a person sits thereon or it may be made of other suitable material, and upholstered on its upper side if need be.

4 designates a post or rod for supporting the seat 3 upon its upper end, both of the ends of which rod are bent at right angles to the shank or body portion. The upper end of the said post or rod is made square in cross section, and may be thinned down or tapered at its extremity.

5 designates a brace that may be composed of strap iron secured at its end portions to the bottom of the seat 3. The said brace is bent down at its middle where it is provided with a slot 6, extending fore and aft for the reception of the upper end of the post or rod 4, so as to keep the seat from moving laterally but to permit the upper end of the rod to be inserted through and removed from the said slot. A hole is made vertically through the upper end portion of the post or rod near the angular bend, and an other at its extremity for the reception of the shanks of thumb-screws or bolts 7 by which to secure the angular upper end of the post or rod to the bottom of the seat. The said thumb-screws or bolts are made removable, as indicated, in order to remove the seat 3 when necessary.

8 designates the front board of the seat 2 to which is secured in any suitable way a block 9 of hard wood or other suitable material provided with a hole 10 into which the lower angular end 11 of the post or rod 4 is projected. Another block of wood 12 is secured to the bottom of the buggy-bed, and a nail 13 is driven through the latter block in proximity to the post or rod 4, to prevent the angular end 11 of the said post 4 from being accidentally drawn out or displaced from its position in the hole 10 formed in the block 9.

Instead of driving a nail in the block 12, as described, a hole may be made through the block or in the bottom of the bed of the buggy, or in both, and a vertically disposed sping-pressed pin arranged therein, as represented, which when projected upwardly will impinge against the side of the post or rod 4, and hold the angular end 11 of the latter in place, in the block 9, the same as the nail. In this instance the springpressed pin will be depressed whenever the said angular end of the post or rod is to be inserted in or removed from the hole in the block. In case of the use of a nail, the lower end will be removably connected with the bottom of the bed of the buggy,that is, the said lower end of the nail will be inserted in a hole in the bottom of the bed, from which it can be withdrawn. In order to prevent lateral movement of the upper part of the standard 4 there is secured to the front board a U-shaped support 14:.

Under the foregoing specified construction, which is exceedingly simple and easy to make, it will be noted that the supplemental seat may be readily and quickly removed or put in place without disturbing or modifying the construction of the buggy or other vehicle seat, while, when in position for use, the said supplemental seat will be kept firmly in position against turning, or moving from side to side, or tipping in any direction from the plane of the regular seat 2.

That is claimed, is

The combination with a vehicle body, its seat and front board, of a support mounted at the top of said board provided with an opening therethrough, a block held on the vehicle floor directly beneath the support, said block being provided with an offset portion, a horizontal recess in the base above said offset portion, and a vertical recess in the offset portion in spaced relation to the base, a post provided with a laterally bent lower end adapted to pass through the support and enter the horizontal recess, a seat upon the upper end of said post, and a spring-pressed plunger held in the vertical recess in contact with the post end to hold said post end in the horizontal recess, said plunger being arranged to be pushed down out of contact with the post end and permit the withdrawal thereof from the horizontal recess.
