HENRY C. JACOBS, OF GLASCO, KANSAS.
WIRE STRETCHER AND SPLIGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 20, 1909.
Patented June 14, 1910.
Serial No. 513,807.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY C. JACOBS, citizen of the United States, residing at Glasco, in the county of Cloud and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vire Stretchers and Splicers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wire stretchers and has for its object to provide a device of this character, simple in construction and which will be especially adaptable for use in bringing the ends of a broken wire together for splicing, the construction being such as to admit ofeasy access to the ends of the wire for the above purpose after they have been brought together.
WVith this and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved stretcher adjusted for operation; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view thereof; and, Fig. 3 is an end view.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the frame of my improved wire stretcher which is preferably of the shape herein shown, but which may be of any other shape found most desirable, and which is constructed of metal of a sufficient width and thickness to give it the desired strength.
The frame 1 has secured thereto at one side, by a bolt or other fastening means, the clamping jaw 2 for engaging a wire, such jaw being of the usual construction.
To the opposite side of the frame 1 near the upper end thereof is pivotally secured the lever 3, which is ofiset from the frame and which is provided near its upper end with the longitudinally extending slot 11. Carried in said slot and secured to the lever 3 by a bolt or other fastening means, is provided the U-shaped guide 12 which is adapted to receive one end of the chain 6. A pawl 13 is pivotally secured to one side of the guide for engagement with the chain.
The opposite end of the chain 6 is provided with the clamping aws 7, of any de sired construction, for engagement with the wire.
A stud 8 is provided in the frame 1 to engage the chain 6 after the ends of the wire have been brought together and serves to hold the same in that position.
It will be clear that after the ends of the wire have been brought together that there will be no tension on the same from the point of engagement by the clamping jaws 2 and the opposite clamping jaws 7 on the end of the chain 6. To take up as much of the slack as possible caused thereby, the auxiliary lever 4 is provided. The lever 4 is pivotally secured to the frame 1 near the middle thereof and carries the clamping jaws 9 also of the usual design, for engagement with the wire.
For attaching the stretcher to a post or other stationary object, the chain 10 is provided. One end of the chain is secured to the frame 1 and is designed to encircle the post or to be otherwise secured thereto.
In operation, when used as a wire splicer,
the wire is gripped at apoint near one of its ends by the clamping jaws 2. The clamping jaws 7 carried by the chain 6 are then secured to the wire near its opposite end and the lever 3 carrying the chain 6 is operated to bring the ends of the wire together. WVhen strained until taut the chain 6 is engaged with the stud 8 thereby holding the wires in that position. The lever 4 is then operated to bring the ends of the wire together as tight as possible for splicing. In this way the ends of the wire are made to overlap in the center of the frame thereby admitting of ready access thereto. It will be seen that I have provided a very simple, yet efficient construction providing for the straining of the wires up to the point of splicing and admitting of easy access thereto for that purpose.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a frame, wire gripping jaws secured at one side thereof, a main lever pivotally secured to the opposite side of the frame, means carried by said lever for engagement with the wire and an auxiliary lever pivotally secured to the same side of the frame as the main lever and provided with wire gripping jaws.
2. A device of the character described comprising a frame, wire gripping jaws secured at one side thereof, a main lever pivotally secured to the opposite side of the frame near the upper end thereof and offset therefrom near its upper end, an operating chain carried by said lever, wire gripping aws carried by the chain and an auxiliary lever pivotally secured to the frame alongside of the main lever and off-set near its upper end from the frame and provided with wire gripping jaws.
3. A device of the character described comprising a frame, wire gripping jaws secured at one side thereof, a main lever pivotally secured to the opposite side of the frame near the upper end thereof and olfset therefrom near its upper end, an operating chain, a chain guide carried by said lever, a pawl secured to the guide and arranged to engage the chain, wire gripping jaws carried by the chain, and an auxiliary lever pivotally secured to the frame below the main lever and off-set near its upper end from the frame and provided with wire gripping jaws.
4,. A device of the character described comprising a frame, wire gripping jaws secured at one side thereof, a main lever pivotally secured to the opposite side of the frame near the upper end thereof and off-set therefrom near its upper end, a chain guide slidably mounted on said lever, an operating chain carried by the guide and provided with wire gripping jaws and an auxiliary lever pivotally secured to the frame below the main lever and off-set near its upper end from the frame and provided with wire gripping jaws.
5. A device of the character described comprising a frame relatively thicker at the sides than at the ends, a securing chain carried by one of said sides, wire gripping jaws mounted below said chain, a main lever pivotally secured to the opposite side of said frame near the upper end thereof and off set therefrom near its upper end, means car ried by said lever for engagement with the wire and an auxiliary lever pivotally secured to the frame below the main lever and off-set near its upper end from the frame, and provided with wire grip ing jaws.
In testimony whereof I a 1 my signature in presence of witnesses.
