WITNESSE INVENTOR ATTORNE Y ANDREW a GRAHAM co. PHDTO-LITHDGRAFNERS. WASHINGTON, u
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES BUYHERS, OF CASEY, ILLINOIS.
STEAM-BOILER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES BUYr-mRs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Casey, in the county of Clark and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Stean1-Boiler, of which invention the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a boiler which will be capable of generating steam rapidly and with the expenditure of a minimum amount of fuel and manual attention.
Other and more specific objects are to provide a boiler of the character described which will be economical of construction, durable, and not liable to get out of repair.
My invention consists in the new combination, construction and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings, described in this specification, and defined in the appended claims; it being understood that minor changes might be made in the details thereof within the scope as defined by the claims, without departing from the nature of my invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the drawings, similar characters of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central longitudinal sectional view of my improved boiler and Fig. 2 is a front view thereof. Fig. 8 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3; Fig. & is a transverse sectional view taken on the line M; Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5; and Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 66 in Fig. 1.
The body-portion of my improved boiler consists of the arched metal sheet A, the lower and straightened portions A of which will constitute the outer surfaces of the walls B and B These walls are composed of refractory material such as plastic fire-proof composition, fire-clay or firebrick, and are provided with the sheet metal lining-plates C and C which are held in their respective positions by bolts D. The bases of these walls are rendered substantial and durable by being provided with the channel-shaped shoes E. The crown sheet F, disposed horizontally, and riveted in position at its sides and ends, to the frontal plate H and to the rear-plate H is support ed by a suitable number of stay bolts G.
The fire-box, provided with the usual Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 16, 1910.
Patented June 7, 1910.

grate-bars I, has communication through the opening K in the rear wall thereof, and through the opening K in the rear plate H with the combustion chamber that 1s formed by the cylindrical sheet metal shell J. The general form and arrangement of the said rear-plate H is clearly shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 5. The steel tubes L have their open forward ends secured by being screwed into the rear plate H and they are supported in the horizontal position by the crossbars M that are bolted to the shell J, and as shown in Fig. 4. The caps L which close the rear ends of these tubes are provided with the angular projections L and after being screwed onto the ends of the tubes are calked. To remove one of the tubes from its connection with the rear-plate H a wrench or other suitable implement is applied to said cap.
The end-plate N which is fastened to the shell J and which is provided with the opening N in its lower portion, forms such partial closure of the rear end of the said shell as to bafitle, and to thereby conserve the heat contained within the combustion chamher. The extreme rear of the shell is closed by the rear-head plate 0 whereby the smoke-room P is formed and into which smoke-room the combustion chamber has communication through the said opening N Leading up from the smoke-room is the usual stack Q.
The hole P which is kept normally closed by the damperdoor P afiords facility whereby the spent products of combustion including cinders and soot, may be easily removed from the smoke-room.
The openings J and J in the top and bottom portions respectively, of the shell, and which are closed by the removable plates J afford access to the combustion chamber for the cleaning of same and the tubes.
The end-plate N and the rear-head plate 0 are secured in position by bolts N and 0 respectively rendering the said plates capable of being easily removed.
The body-portion of the boiler is provided with the usual steam-dome R, and the gagecocks S.
T T designate suitable bracing connections for the shell J.
By the foregoing construction, combination and arrangement of parts is provided a boiler of such structural qualities that the strains incident to expansion and contraction will not operate to weaken or impair any of the vital parts thereof. The construction of same will be economical and there will be small liability of serious damage or derangement should the water level therein become temporarily below gage.
The water is fed into the boiler at the inlets U arranged at each side of the body-portion and at points slightly above the crown sheet. Immediately from the commencement of the firing of this boiler, the heat is effectively conserved, the initial heat of the fire-box operating 11 on the crown-sheet and the colder portion of the water, and the heat generated in the combustion chamber and about the tubes, being so utilized, that the water is heated rapidly and will be maintained uniformly at temperature of desired high degree.
By reason of the positive draft afforded a hot fire may be obtained quickly, and the intensity of combustion within the shell may be regulated by the damper-door P Boilers constructed in accordance with my invention having its qualities of simple and rugged construction and of easy firing and rapid steaming, and being comparatively light in weight, are especially useful whereever the services of portable boilers are de sired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a steam boiler of the kind described, the combination of an arched plate having its sides disposed downwardly and substantially parallel to each other, a frontal plate and a rear plate, a crown sheet riveted to the frontal plate and the rear plate and to the sides of the arched plate there being an opening in the said rear plate below the crown sheet, refractory material to form an interior lining for that portion of the sides and the frontal and rear plates below the crown sheet, tubes having their open ends secured to the rear plate and having their rear ends closed, a shell to form a combustion chamber about the said tubes and being riveted to the rear plate there being an opening in the shell at its rear end for a smoke stack, substantially as described.
2. In a steam boiler of the kind described, the combination of an arched plate having its sides disposed downwardly and substantially parallel to each other, a frontal plate and a rear plate, a crown sheet riveted to the frontal plate and the rear plate and to the sides of the arched plate there being an opening in the said rear plate underneath the crown sheet, refractory material to form an interior lining for that portion of the sides and the frontal and rear plate below the crown sheet, tubes having their open ends secured to the rear plate and having their rear ends closed, a shell to form a combustion chamber about the said tubes and being riveted to the rear plate there being an opening in the shell at its rear end for a smoke stack, a baflie plate provided with an opening and interposed between the tubes and the opening for the smoke stack.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name, before and in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' JAMES BUYHERS.
