COMBINED REAR LIGHT AND NUMBER-TAG.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11119 '7, 1910.
Application filed July 19, 1909. Serial No. 508,450.
ledo, in the county of'Lucas and gtate of a certain new and use- Combined Rear Lights and Number-Tags of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates Ohio, have invented to a new and useful improvement in combined rear light and number tag, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character whereby the white rays from the lamp will at all'times shine upon the numbers on'the tag while at the same time the rays passing through the red glass will show to the rear, so that a person coming toward the vehicle carrying one of these lights will know that there is some object before him.
The laws in different parts of the world a self propelled vehicle carry a license number and in order that these may be seen at night a light must shine upon the same. To comply with these laws I have devised the present invention, which -is accomplished by securing a lamp to the tag in such a manner that the white rays therefrom will shine upon the tag, while the red rays will shine to the rear.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanyin drawing forming a part of this speci cation, in which the figure is a perspective view of my invention. Y
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the number tag havnumber B and the. State designator C. of the tag are formed the slots D, through which pass straps or their equivalent for securing the tag to the rear of a vehicle.
In both ends of the tag are formed the holes E for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
F is a bracket having a body portion G, withwhich is formed integral the legs H, theouter ends of said legs being bent to form the feet I, and through these feet pass the screws J or their equivalent which engage with the holes E in the tag thereby securing said bracket tosaid tag. To the body G of the bracket F is secured a lamp K, which may be of any shape and may burn any desirable fuel, but the one here shown being an electric. The side of. the lamp K which is at right angles to the tag, has a white glass L therein through which shines the rays. of the lamp upon the number. The side of the lamp at right angles to the side carrying the white glass which is the rear carries a red glass M, which notifies a person at the rear of' the machine that some object is before him.
From the foregoing seen, that no matter what position the number tag may assume, the white light will at all times shine thereon, so that a person upon the road may see said number.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction here shown. as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is-
In combination, a number tag having slots and holes formed therein, a bracket having a body portion, legs formed integral with said body portion, and feet. formed with the ends of said legs, screws passing through said feet and the holes in the tag for securing said bracket to .said tag, and a "lamp provided with a white and a red glass, the rays passing through the white glass adapted to shine upon the number tag. I
In testimony whereof I hav: hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' ABSALOM F. CLARK.
