APPARATUS FOR CHARGING DYE-VATS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BARTHELEMY MAYoUX and CHARLES VERoHisRE, citizens of the French Republic, and residing at Izieux, Department Loire, in France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Charging Dye-Vats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvement in apparatus for charging dye-vats.
The operations of dyeing and of preparing goods for the reception of dye involve the use of a series of baths, and for this purpose it has hitherto been usual to transfer the goods from one vat to another, either by hand or by mechanical means.
The purpose of the present invention is to allow of effecting the successive operations of preparing and dyeing with apparatus of great simplicity, occupying a very small amount of space, without changing the position of the goods or apparatus. For this purpose the baths are successively introduced from and returned to reservoirs adjacent the vats by pneumatic means.
A construction embodying the invention is illustrated in the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is an elevation of the apparatus, arranged for working with compressed air. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 a cross-section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, on a larger scale.
Referring to Figs. 13, the double frame A, with skein-holders a, is supported by a hydraulic elevator B by means of which it can be raised to lift the skeins from the baths. Ateach side of the frame, below the skeinholders a, two vats C C, are permanently fixed, and all the successive operations of dyeing are performed in these two vats. Below the vats C C or in any other convenient position, there are reservoirs D D into which the baths are discharged after use, in order to be preserved for further use. The transfer of the liquid takes place by means of compressed air, and may be effected in the following manner.
First meth0d.Air for raising the baths is compressed in a drum E by means of a compressor F connected to the drum by a pipe 7, and passes from the said drum into a pipe G. enable the drum E to be placed in communication with the respective reservoirs, or the interiors of the reservoirs to be placed in communication with the outer atmosphere while the baths are being heated by steam from a pipe J.
Below the two vats C 0, there is a pipe K, which can be placed in communication with the one or other vat by means of valve L or L respectively and with the reservoir D or D by means of valves M or M provided with tubular prolongations m m extending to within a short distance of the bottoms of the reservoirs D D respectively. Two valves N N allow of emptying the vats without refilling the reservoirs D D the liquid being discharged into a waste-pi e O or 0 When for example the valve is opened and compressed air is admitted to the reservoir D liquid from the latter as cends through the tube 17?. to the pipe K, lifts the valves L and L and passes into the vats C and C The valve M is then closed and the cock I opened to place the interior of the reservoir in communication with the atmosphere.
For emptying the vats C C, the valves L and L, are lifted and the valve M opened, whereupon the liquid flows back to the reservoir D, or one of the valves N N is opened and the liquid passes away through the pipe 0 or 0 If the contents of the reservoir D is to be used the cock I and valve M are opened.
The valves M M are controlled by levers P one of which is shown in Fi 1, the other being on the other side of the apparatus. The valves N N are controlled by levers Q of which one is shown in Fig. 1. The levers P and Q may be operated in any convenient way, for example directly by hand, as in the case of the lever P, or by means of a chain-wheel, as in the case of the lever Q.
The frame with the skein-holders is lifted by means of the hydraulic elevator B, on the piston of which the frame rests. Water under pressure is supplied to the elevator by a pipe Z), which can be connected by a three-way cock R to a supply-pipe S. The frame descends by gravity when the pipe I) is placed in communication with the discharge-pipe T by means of the cock R.
Second method.The air may be compressed by hydraulic power if a sufficient head of Water is available. In this case water it om an elevated source ofsupply is conducted to a reservoir U placed at a level somewhat higher than that of the vats C (3,. V hen the baths are to be raised from the reservoirs D l), to the vats C C the cock V admitting water to the reservoir U is opened, and the water flows into the reservoir U through the pipe V The air-cock ll is opened to place the reservoirs U and l) in communication with each other, so that the bath is raised by the air expelled from the reservoir U, the supply of liquid to the vat being proportional to the amount of water admitted to the reservoir U. hen the vat is full the cock V closed. The water is discharged from the reservoir U and used for washing purposes, the reservoir being refilled with air admitted by a valve TV. The discharge-pipe U, leading from the reservoir U is connected by a pipe to, and valve u to the vats. The arrangement of the reservoirs D is the same as described with reference to the first method of operation.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is V 1. In apparatus for the purpose set forth the combination of a dye vat, a plurality of closed dye bath reservoirs, separate means of communication between each reservoir and the bottom of the dye vat, valves in said communications for selectively opening and closing the same, means for varying the air pressure prevailing in the respective reservoirs to cause liquid to pass from the same into the dye vat or from the latter to the respective reservoirs and means for supplying water to the dye vat independently of said reservoirs.
2. In apparatus for the purpose set forth the combination of an open dye vat, means for suspending goods to be dyed therein, said suspending means being capable of vertical movement, a plurality of closed dye bath reservoirs, separate means of communication between each reservoir and the bottom of the dye vat, valves in said communications for selectively opening and closing the same, means for varying the air pressure prevailing in the respective reservoirs to cause liquid to pass from the same into the dye vat or from the latter to the respective reservoirs and means for supplying water to the dye vat independently of said reservoirs.
3. In apparatus for the purpose set forth the combination of a dye vat, a plurality of closed dye bath reservoirs, separate means of communication between each reservoir and the bottom of the dye vat, valves in said communications for selectively opening and closing the same, means for varying the air pressure prevailing in the respective reservoirs to cause liquid to pass from the same into the dye vat or from the latter to the respective reservoirs and means for supplying water to the dye vat independently of said reservoirs, said means being also operative to supply pneumatic pressure for operating the supply and removal of the baths to and from the dye vat. 4. Tn apparatus for the purpose set forth the combination of a dye vat, a plurality of closed dye bath reservoirs beneath the level of the bottom of said vat, separate means of communication between each reservoir and the bottom of the vat, valves in said communications, a closed air reservoir above the said dye bath reservoirs, valved communications between the upper part of the air reservoir and the dye bath reservoirs, and means for admitting water under pressure into said air reservoir.
5. In apparatus for the purpose set forth the combination of a dye vat, a plurality of closed dye bath reservoirs beneath the level of the bottom of said vat, separate means of communication between each reservoir and the bottom of the vat, valves in said communications, a closed air reservoir above the said dye bath reservoirs, valved communicaspecification in the presence of two witnesses.-
