To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. HOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Eyeglass-Mountings, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to eye-glass mountings and consists in the construction and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

One object of my invention is to provide means whereby the nose guards are pivotally connected to the lens carrying post.

A further object is to combine with the pivotally mounted nose guards springs for pressing them against the nose of the wearer.

In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a top plan view of a pair of eye-glasses provided with my improved mountings. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail top plan view of the same. Fig. 4: is a sectional view of a modified construction of my improved eye-glass mounting. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken on the plane intersecting one of the studs or posts. Fig. 6 is a detail top plan view of the same.

Referring to the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the bridge piece 1 is provided at its ends with downwardly extending portions 2 which enter openings 3 in boxes 4 at the inner ends of the studs or bolts 5 which may otherwise be of any suitable form and attached to the lenses 6 by any suitable means. The said boxes 4 are each formed at its inner side with a metallic strip 7 which has a rearwardly bent double portion 8 providing a pivot eye 9, an outwardly extending arm 10 to close the outer side of the opening3 and an outwardly bent arm 11 to bear against an arm 12 at the front side of the said recess, the said arm 12 being shorter than the said arm 11, as shown in detail in Fig. 6. The depending portions 2 of the bridge piece bear against the inner sides of the recesses 3, and between the said portions 2 of the bridge piece and the arms 10 of the boxes are eyes 18 formed at the upper ends of the inner arms 14 of substantially U- haped springs 15 which are here shown as provided with spring coils 16 and which connect the inner arms 14: and the outer arms 17 of such springs, said arms 17 extending upwardly to a greater height than the boxes 4:, as shown in Fig. 2. Screws 18 pass through openings in the arms 10 and the bridge piece downturned portions 2 and enter threaded openings in the posts or studs 5 and also pass through the eyes 13 of the springs 16. The arms 11 of the boxes being disconnected from and disposed in overlapping relation with reference to the arms 12 thereof enable the arms 10 of the boxes which form the inner sides of the openings or recesses 3 to be moved or adjusted by the screws 18 to enable the bridge piece portions 2 and the eye portions of the springs to be firmly clamped in the openings or recesses in the boxes by the said screws, as will be understood by reference to Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings.

Each nose guard or nose piece 19 is provided with an arm 20 which is bent to form a. vertical pivot portion 21 which has its bearing in the pivot eye 9 of one of the boxes 4, the upper portion of the said arm projecting forwardly and upwardly from the said pivot eye as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and being engaged at a suitable distance from its front end by the upper portion of the arm 17 of one of the springsso that the tension of the said springs is exerted against said arms of the nose pieces or guards to press the latter toward each other and thereby cause them to be pressed against opposite sides of the nose of the wearer by the tension of said springs to retain the glasses in place.

In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4, each spring 22 has a free rear arm 23 which bears against the outer side of the arm 24E of the nose guard 25 so that the nose guards are pressed by the springs toward each other.

It will be understood that in the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4:, inclusive, the forwardly and upwardly extending portions of the pivot arms of the nose guards act as levers which enable the wearer to readily disengage the nose guards from his nose in order to adjust or remove the glasses.

I claim 1. An eye glass comprising lenses, said lenses having their mountings provided with boxes, said boxes having eyes formed therein, a nose bridge, said nose bridge having downwardly extending portions engaged in the said boxes, arms pivotally mounted on said boxes and provided with downwardly extending movable nose guard carrying arms, and springs mounted in said boxes and provided with upwardly extending arms adapted to yieldingl engage the said movable arms so that t e nose guards will be forced toward each other to assume their operative or clamping positions.

An eye glass comprising lenses, said lenses having their mountings provided with boxes, said boxes having recesses formed therein and provided rearwardly of the recesses with vertical eyes, arms extending forwardly of the boxes to form levers and provided with depending portions mounted in tlge eyes of the boxes, said arms being provided at their lower ends with guards or
