CHEESE-CUTTING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARLO SEGALE, a citizen of Genoa, Italy, residing at No. 3371 Mission street, San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cheese-Cutting Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to devices for cut ting butter, cheese, and other articles of merchandise.

The object of the invention is to provide a device which may be placed on a table or counter, such device having a. stationary base portion, with a movable carriage mounted thereon, and a table portion for the reception of merchandise mounted above the lower portion of the carriage, with a knife arranged to be moved with the carriage, and a device for indicating the distance traveled by the carriage, in order that the slices or sections of merchandise to be cut, may be of a corresponding size, or varied in size according to circumstances.

In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of the device, with the cutting mechanism removed. Fig. 2 is a view partly in vertical transverse section and partly in elevation. Fig. 3 is a front elevation.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 indicates a base portion, which may be con structed of metal, and'consist of one casting, if desired. Along the inner sides of this casting rack bars 2 are arranged, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and carried by base portion 1 (which is stationary and may be secured to a table or counter), is a carriage on which the cutting device is mounted. This carriage is provided with a transverse member 3 having connected therewith a U-shaped frame 4 provided with arms 5 extending from one side thereof, these arms supporting a pivot 6 for securing the knife 7 in position.

Longitudinally of the base and centrally thereof a rod 9 is provided for the purpose of guiding the carriage, and encircling this rod is a guiding devlce 10 connected with the transverse member 3. A hand wheel 11 is mounted on a shaft 12 which passes Specification of Letters Patent.

through the portion 13 of the member 3, such shaft carrying toothed wheels 14 arranged to engage the rack bars 2. Above the base portion of the carriage a table 15 is mounted, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and a section 16, of wood or other material, constitutes the surface of the table. A tube 17 extends along the front of the device, this tube having a longitudinal slot 18 in one side thereof, and inclosing a roller 19 provided with knobs 21 and 22 at the ends. The roller is provided with a series of scales indicating the size of the slices of merchandise to be out. At the left of the roller the particular scale to be exposed at any given time is indi cated by a suitable character. As many clifferent scales as the circumference of the roller will permit are provided, so that the size of the slices may be varied according to circumstances. A pointer 23 is attached in any suitable manner and projects in front of the tube, and also in front of the scale exposed through the slot in the tube. The U-shaped frame A consists of a plurality of members 24 as shown in Fig. 3, for the accommodation between such members of the blade of the cutting device 7.

In operation, the scale desired is brought into position where it may be exposed through the slot of the tube 17 the carriage is placed in such position that the cutting will begin at one end of the piece of merchandise placed on the table, the knife is brought into action for making the first cut, and the hand wheel 11 is then moved for the purpose of moving the carriage into such position that the next point on the scale will appear opposite the device 23.

On the table carrying the piece of merchandise any suitable engaging devices, such as pins 25, may be provided, to prevent the article from being accidentally misplaced while being out.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the character described, a base portion, a guiding rod extending longitudinally thereof, a carriage mounted on the base, a member connected to the carriage and arranged to engage the guiding rod, said member comprising a brace extending transversely of the carriage, and a cylindrical guiding device extending longitudinally of the carriage and transversely of said memher, a shaft mounted on the carriage, pinions mounted on the shaft, rack bars carried by the base and arranged to be engaged by the pinions, a cutting device mounted on the carriage, a table mounted above the lower portion of the carriage, and means for indicating the distance traveled by the carriage.

2. In a device of the character described, a base portion, a carriage mounted above the same, a guiding bar arranged longitudinally of the base portion, a member mounted on the carriage and arranged to engage the guiding bar, a shaft mounted on the carriage, pinions carried by the shaft, rack bars mounted on the base and arranged to be engaged by the pinions, a frame mounted on the carriage, such frame comprising tWo U- shaped members parallelly arranged, each provided With a laterally extending arm, a knife pivoted between such arms, and arranged between the parallel portions of such frame, a table mounted above the loWer portion of the carriage, and a scale for indicating the distance traveled by the carriage.
