Be it known that Enxns'r E. KOKEN, deceased, late a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, did invent a certain new and useful Improvement. in TwolVay Faucets, of which the following is a specificatlon.
This invent-ion relates to two-way faucets.
It has for its principal objects to produce a two-way faucet which is simple in construction and can be readily manipulated; to provide for the discharge of either cold or hot water or a mixture of cold and hot water through one or the other of the discharge nozzles; to regulate the. mixture; to regulate the tlow; and to attain certain other advantages hereinafter` more fully appearin".
The invention consists in the parts and in thc arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification, and wherein like symbols refer to likeparts wherever they occur, Figure 1 is a fragmentary View of a two-way faucet embodying the invention, the valve. mechanism being shown i vertical longitudinal section: Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line Q--Q of Fig. 1.

As shown in the drawings. the device comprises a valve-eaf-ug 1. Extending laterally from the valve-easing is a discharge nozzle 2 which 'is usually arranged to discharge into a lavatory or basin in a well known manner. Extending upwardly from the valve-casing is an elongated nozzle or pipe 3 whose upper end portion is curwd or bent so as to discharge downwardly as at 4. ln the upper portion of the valve-casing 1 is a passageway which communicates with the discharge nozzle 3 while in the side portion of said casing is a second passageway tt which communicates with the discharge. nozzle 2. The partition is located substantially midway between the ends of the valve-casing and it is provided with a central opening or bore S. In the cylindrical chamber on one. side of the partition 7 is rotatably fitted a cylindricalvalvemember 9 which is hollowed ont or chambered as at 10 and provided with a head 11 at its outer end.
The valve-member 9 is provided in its annular portion with a port. opening 122 which is adapted to register with a port opening 13 in the valve-casing which communicates with the passageway 5 leading to the upper nozzle member 3. The port opening in the valve-member 9 is also adapted to register with a port opening 14 in the valvecasing which communicates with the passageway t5 leading to the discharge nozzle 2. The valve-mem er 2l is provided with a second set of port openings 23, 24", which are located with respect to each other in a manner similar to the before-mentioned port openings 23, 24; but one set of openings is located at substantially an angle of ninety degrees with respect to the other set. These openings are also located with respect to the port opening 12 in the valve-member 9 so that the port openings 23, 24* communicate with the port openings 15, 16 at the time said port opening 12 communicates with the l port opening 13 which leads into the passageway 5; and the port openings 23, 24 communicate with said port openings 15, 16 when said port opening 12 communicates with the port openln 14 which leads to the pasageway 6. The passageway 8 in the partition 7 is surrounded by an annular flange 26 which is beveled to provide a seat for a beveled valve-member 27. The valve 27 is mounted on a cylindrical rod 28 which is adapted to be both rotated and reciprocated in the valve-casing 1. The handle 31 is ivotally attached to the outer end of the rod328, as at 32; and it has a downward extension 33 which is pivot-ally connected with one end of a link 34 whose opposite end is pivotally attached to a deending lug or ear 35 on a rotatable memr 36 which is mounted eoncentricallv of said rod 28. The member 36 is sleeved rotatably on the reduced end portion of a by heads 40, 41, respectively, which are secured to the ends of the easing 1. The operation of the device is as follows: Assuming that it is desired to discharge a mixture of hot and cold water through the nozzle or ipe 3. The valve-member 9 is turned to tlie position shown in Figs. 1 and 3; that is, the port opening 12 is moved into position to register with the pori opening 13 1n the valve-casing, at which time the port openings 23, 24* in the valve-member 21 overlap the port openings 15, 16 in the valvecasing to t e extent of substantially onehalf their areas. In this position of the valve-members, an e( ual volume of water is supplied to the cham er 25 from each of the supply pipes 18 and 20. In this position, also, the handle 3l stands vertically with respect to the axis of the rod 28. The handle 31 is then pushed inwardly to open the valve 27 whereby communication is established between the chamber 25 and the chamber 10. The mixture of hot and cold Water will then pass out through the port openings 12, 13, passa eway 5, and into the nozzle or pipe 3. If it 1s desired to vary the temperature of the Water, the handle 3l may he turned a few degrees to either side and thereby vary the proportionate areas of the port openings between the chamber 25 and the ipes 18 and 20. For exam le, if it is desire( to raise the temperature o the water which is dis` charged from the nozzle 3, the handle 31 is turned so as to rotate the valve-member 2l in the direction so as to enlarge the opening of communication between the port opening 24l and the port opening 16 which communicates with the )assageway 19; and to decrease the size oi the openingr of connnunication between the port opening 23 and the port opening 15 which connnunicales with the passageway 17. (')n the other hand` if it is desired to lower the temperature of the discharged water, the handle is turned in the reverse direction. If it is desired to discharge not water only, the handle 31 is turned so as to rotate the valve-member 21 vuntil the port opening 2st'` registers fully the port opening 23n into p vthe area of t discharge nozzle or pipe is controlled with the port opening 16 in the valve-casing, and communication is entirely cut oli' between the port opening 23* and the port opening 15 in the valve-casing. On the other hand, if it is desired to discharge cold -water only, the handle 31 is moved to a corresponding position in the reverse direction, so as to move the valve-member 21 to b ring osition to register fully with the port opening 15 'and cut off communication etween the port opening24 and the port opening 16. The area of the port opening 12 in the valve-member 9 is sufficient to always open communication through port opening 13 to the full extent of the area of said port o ening k13 which is equal to the area of t e individual 'port ocnings 15, 16, when the same are individually opened to their fullest extent., or to the combined partial o ening of said two port openings 15, 16. herefore, the area of the outlet ort opening is always equal to lie inlet port opening or openrlhe flow of the water throu h the y manipulating the valve 27 to increase or decrease, as the case may be, the size of the o ening between the chamber 25 and the cliamber 10. When it is desired to discharge the water through the lower or lateral nozzle 2, the valve- members 9, 21 are rotated so as to bring the port opening 12 into communication with the port opening 14 which communicates with the passagewa 6 and also bring the port openings 23 an 24 into position to register either alternately with the respective port openings 15 and 16 to their fullest extent, or simultaneously into partial communication with both of said port openings 15 and 16. The handle 31 will be manipulated to regulate the temperature and low of the discharged water in a manner similar to that in which it is manipulated for the upper nozzle 3, except that its angular movement will be above and below a horizontal plane with respect to the axis of the rod 28.

What is claimed is:
1. A two-way faucet comprising a valvecasing having two chambers therein and means for establishing communication between said chambers, two discharge nozzles leading from said valve-casing and communicating with one of saiilchanibers therein, fwo su ply pipes communicating with the other clianiber in said valve-casing, and connected valves in said valve-casing arranged to alternately establish communication with the respect-ive supply pipes and simultaneously establish communication through either of the respective discharge nozzles, and said valves being also arranged to simultaneously establish communication proportionately through both of said supply pipes when communication is established through either of the discharge nozzles.
2. A two-way faucet comprising a valvecasing having two chambers therein and means for establishing communication between said chambers, a lateral discharge nozzle and an upwardly extending discharge nozzle which is arranged to discharge above said lateral discharge nozzle, said discharge nozzles communicating with one of said chambers through separate port openings, two su ply pipes communicating with the otherl c iamber through separate port openings, and a valve arranged to alternately open communication through the port openings which communicate with said dischar e nozzles, and another valve connected to said rst-mentioned valve and arranged to alternately open communication through the port openings which communicate with said supp f pipes when communication is established through either of the port openings which communicate with sai discharge nozzles, said valves being also arranged to simultaneously open communication proportionatelythrough both of said port openings which communicate with the supply pipes when communication is established through either'of the port openings which communicate with the discharge nozzles.
3. A two-way faucet comprising a valvecasing vhaving two chambers therein and aV passage-way connecting said chambers, a valve for controlling said passage-way, two discharge nozzles leading from said valvecasing and communicating with one of the chambers therein through separate port openings, a valve-member in said chamber adapted to alternately open communication through said port openings which communicate with the respective discharge nozzles, two supply pipes communicating with the second chamber in the valve-casing through separate port openings therein, a valve-inember in said second chamber adapted to alternately open communication through the re` spective port openings which communicate with the supply ipes, said valve-member being also adapte to simultaneously open communication proportionately through both of said port openings which communicate with the supply pipes, said valve-menibcr in said second-mentioned chamber being so arranged with respect to the valve-lilcinber in the first-mentioned chamber that conimunication is established through the port openings which communicate with the Supply pipes when the valve-member in the rst-mentioned chamber establishes commiinication through either of the port opendischarge nozzles, and means for ings which communicate with the respective simultaneously actual ing the Valve-chambers in said chambers and also for manipulating the valve which controls the passage-way between said chambers.
4. A two-way faucet comprising a valvecasing having two chambers therein which are connected=` by a passage-way, a valve for controlling said tissage-way, two discharge nozzles leading rom said casing and coniinunicating with one of said chambers through separate port openings therein, a chainbered valve-member in said chamber in the val fe-casing, said cliambered valve-member having a port opening arranged to alternately register with either of said port openings in the valve-casing, the other chamber in said valve-casino' having two port openings which communicate with two separate suppl pipes, a chainbered valve-member in saliciI second mentioned chamber* in the valve-casing, said second mentioned chambered valve-member having a pair of port openings therein, one of said pair of port openings being arranged to register with one of the port openings 1n the valvecasincr which communicates with one of the sappi; pipes and .the other of said pair of port openings being arranged to register with the port opening 1n the valve-casing which communicates with the other supply pi e, and said pair of port openings in the vaiJve-meinber being arranged to register simultaneously with both of said port openings in the valve-casing, said p airl of port openings in the valve-member being also arranged so that when one of them registers fully with itscoperating port opening in the valve-casing the other one of said pair will notV register with its coperating port opening in the valve-casing, and that when one of said pair of port openings 1n the valve-ineiiiber registers partially with its eooperating port opening in the valve-casing the other one of said pair will simultaneously register proportionally with its coperative port opening in the valve-casing, and said pair of port openings in the seconddnentioned valve-member being so arranged with respect to the port opening in the first mentioned chanibered valve-ineinber, that the registration of said pair of port openings with their coperating port openings iii the valve-casing occurs when the port opening in the first-mentioned Valveineniber registers with the port opening in the valve-casing which communicates with one of said discharge nozzles` a second pair of port openings in the second mentioned chaniliered valve-member corresponding to said tirstmentioned pair of port openings therein and being so arranged with respect thereto and to the port opening in the first mentioned chambei'ed valve-member, that they register with the portopenings in the valve-casing which communicate with the supply pipes when the port opening in the first-mentioned chanibered valve member communicates with the port opening in the valve-casing communicating with the other discharge nozzle, and means for simultaneouslymanipulating said chanilicrcd valvemenibers and valso for manipulating the valve which controls the passage-way between the two chambers in the valve-casing.

A two-way faucet com rising a Avalvecasing provided with two indii rs, two discharge nozzles leading from the supply, means for contro ling the proportions of the respective fluids admitted into said chamber, a rotatory valve-member for alternately establishing communication between tlie other chamber and either of the discharge nozzles, and a valve for admitting .the fluid from the. first-mentioned chamber communication with said the quantity of the re pendent cham-' the respective liquids admitted thereinto, a rotatory valve-member in the other chamber for alternately establishing communication Y either of the discharge nozzles, a reciprocatory valve in one of the chambers for controlling comniunica tion between the two chambers, a rotatory and reciprocatory actuating member coupled to said reciprocatory valve and l the common axis of the rotatory valve-members and movably coupled to the latter, whereby said rotatory valve-members may be simultaneously rotated and the reciprocatory valve may be reciprocated independently thereof, and a sing e manipulating defor imparting rotatoi'y tory motion to said actuating member.

In a faucet, a valve-casing provided with two separate chambers, means for conducting into one ofsaid chambers fluids from independent sources ofl supply, two discharge nozzles leading fr om the other chamrs between said members, and means for conproportions of the respective fluids admitted into said first-mentioned chamber and for simultaneously establishing communication through either of the discharge nozzles.

A two-way faucet comprising a valvecasing provided with two chambers, two discharge nozzles leading from one of said chambers, means for alternately establishing communication between said chamber and either of the discharge nozzles, means for conducting into the other chamber :'luids from two independent sources of supply, means for controlling the proportions of the respective fluids admitted into said secondmentioned chamber, means for establishing communication between said chambers, and a single mani ulating device common to all of the controlling devices.
