SKIRT AND TROUSERS HANGER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MAURICE ALEXANDER HOFFMAN, of the city of Portage la Prairie, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have im'ented certain new and useful Improve- ,ments in Skirt and Trousers Hangers, of

which the followin is the specification.

The invention re ates to hangers and the objectof the invention is to provide a simple device by which skirts or trousers can be suspended and shown to advantage, such device being designed so that there is little difficulty experienced in securing the article in or releasing it from its suspended position.

' It consists essentially in a sliding block,

and arm hingedly connected to the block and slidable therewith, and means carried by the arm adapted to receive and suspend trousers, skirts, or other such articles of clothing, the parts being arranged and constructed as hereinafter more particularly described.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a frame or cabinet showing two of my hangers secured thereto, the one being in what might be termed the closed position and the other in the open or displaying position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed side elevation of the hanger detached from the cabinet. Fig. 3 is a plan view as in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross sectional view taken in the plane X K, Fig. 2.

In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each 1 represents a cabinet or support of any suitable form to which the hangers are secured.

Where a merchant is employing my device to show his clothing it is desirable to have a convenient cabinet in which are located hangers side by side, the arrangement being as shown in Fig. 1.

6 provided in the upper face of the block 5. The channel terminates toward the rear end of the block and the pin consequently forms a stop to prevent the block from passing from between the channel iron bars. 7 is a T- shaped arm also slidable between the channel iron bars and immediately beneath the board 4, said arm being hingedly secured to the sliding block at 8, so that immediately it passes from between the channel iron bars it is free to swing sidewise. is a longitudinally extending groove appearing in the upper face of the arm 7 and located so that it is continuous with the groove 6 in the block when the block and arm are slid between the channel iron bars. The arm is provided with an end plate 9 which carries a pin 10 by which the arm can be manipulated. It is considered that a card or such like can be placed on the end plate giving the size, price, or any other such desirable information in connection with the goods carried by the hanger. The plate extends above the level of the T-arm and engages with the ends of the channel iron bars when the hanger is in the closed position.

11 is'a bifurcated or forked bracket firmly secured to the rear end of the T-shaped arm, said bracket having the pron s or forked portions 19. thereof inclined slightly to the vertical. 13 is a rod firmly secured to the bracket 11 and passing forwardly in the horizontal plane to the forward end of the T-shaped arm where the extremity is turned at right angles at 14: and firmly secured to the arm. 15 is a bifurcated member movable on the rod 13 and having the forked portion 16 thereof extending downwardly and inclined to the vertical in such a manner that the forks 12 and those 15 converge upwardly.

In order to understand the device I will now describe its operation: To suspend the trousers the lower ends of the legs are initially passed over the prongs 12 of the bracket 11 and the member 15 is then brought to a position where its prongs can be passed also into the ends of the trousers legs. When this is done the member 15 is slid along the rod forwardly till the trousers are pulled taut and then the member is released, when it immediately jams'on the rod, the trousers being accordingly suspended as shown in dotted outline in Fig. 1. The adjoining edge of the sliding block is provided with a notch 19 into which the detent is designed to pass when the T-shaped arm and sliding block are in alinement. It is of course to be understood that the detent will be pressed backwardly into the recess as soon as sufficient pressure is brought on the extending end of the arm.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. In a trousers hanger, in combination, a suitably supported slidable block, an arm hingedly secured to the block and slidable therewith, a stop pin adapted to-limit the motion of the block in one direction, and means carried by the arm and adapted to receive and suspend the legs of trousers, as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a trousers hanger, in combination, a suitably supported slidable block having a I 1 limited longitudinal groove in its upper face,

an arm hingedly secured to the block and slidable therewith, a pin adapted to pass within the groove, and adjustable means carried by the arm and adapted to receive and suspend the legs of trousers, as and for the purpose specified.

3. In a trousers hanger, in combination, a set of opposing parallel suitably supported channel iron bars, a block slidably received between the aforesaid bars, an arm slidable between the bars and hingedly secured to the block whereby it is free to swing in the horizontal direction when withdrawn from the bars, means for preventing the withdrawal of the block from between the bars, and adjustable means carried by the arm adapted to receive and suspend the 1c of trousers, as and for the pu ose specifiet f 4. In a trousers anger, in combination, an opposing and parallel set of suitably supported interconnected channel iron bars, a T- shaped block slidable between the bars and having a limited longitudinal groove in its upper face, a T-shaped arm slidable between the channel bars and hingedly secured to the block, said arm having a longitudinally extending groove in the upper face thereof, a stop pin adapted to enter the grooves and ad ustable means carried by the arm and adapted to receive and suspend the legs of trousers, as and for the purpose specified.

5. In a trousers hanger the combination with a suitably supported slidable block and an arm hingedly secured to the block and slidable therewith, of a permanent bifurcated bracket secured rearwardly to the arm, a rod secured to the bracket and extending forwardly beneath the arm and parallel therewith, the extremity of the rod being secured to the arms, and a forked member longitudinally movable on the rod, as and for the purpose specified. In a trousers hanger the combination with a suitably supported slidable block and an arm hingedly secured to the block and slidable therewith, of a permanent bifurcated bracket secured .to the arm rearwardly and having the prongs thereof extending downwardly and inclined to the vertical plane, a rod secured to the'bracket and extending forwardly beneath the arm and parallel therewith, the free extremity of the rod being fastened to the arm forwardly, and a forked member longitudinally slidable on the rod and having the forks thereof inclined to the vertical in such a manner that the forks and the prongs converge upwardly, as and for the purpose specified.

7. In a trousershanger, the combination with a slidable block having an arm hingedly secured thereto, the upper member of the hinge being recessed and the adjoining edge of the block being provided with a notch, of a spring pressed detent located within the recess, as and for the purpose specified.
