Description

E. J. BUUKMASTER. BOILER TUBE CLEANER.
APPLICATION III JED AUG.19, 1908. 960,496.

WITNESSES INVENTOR,
Patented June 7, 1910.
EDWARD J. BUCKIVIASTER, OF LAUREL HILL, NEW YORK.
BOILER-TUBE CLEANER.
Application filed. August 19, 1908.
To all whom if may concern:
Be it known that I, ED\VARD J. BUCKMAS- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laurel Hill, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Tube Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boiler tube cleaners and has for its object a simple portable device adapted to be inserted in the fire tubes of a boiler to break OE and remove the incrustation accumulating around the tube on its outside, the action being performed by rapidly vibrating hammers which are actuated by air or electricity and the tube or wires for which is used to locate the device in the tube.
These and other objects and particulars of the invention will be more fully referred to in the following specification, set forth in the claim and illustrated in the drawings, where:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a boiler tube showing the invention located therein. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
The cleaner is constructed in connection with an actuating means which in this instance is shown to be a pneumatic hammer 5 of ordinary design and has air supplied to it by means of the pipe or hose 6 which is also used to move the cleaner through the tube and locate it at the desired point. The hammer casing has forwardly extending arms 7 carrying at their ends a shell 8 on the outer side of which are riveted springs 9 having at their forward or free ends the hard metal hammers 10. The springs 9 are of thin sheet metal and readily yield to the pressure of the pivoted blocks 11 carried by the pins 12 in the slots 13 near the forward end of the shell 8 and these blocks have inwardly projecting studs 14: which are normally in the path of a plunger 15 that plays in an opening extending the length of the shell 8.

cam faces 17 at the inner end of the slot.-
The plunger is retracted to its rearward po sition by the spring 18 which surrounds it and is under tension between the shoulder 19 and the pin 20.
In operating this cleaner it is put into the boiler tube and pushed along by the hose 6, the compressed air at the same time operating the hammer. The hammer is driven at a very high rate of speed and striking the plunger 15 it drives same forward throwing the blocks 11 outward with the spring 9 and hammers 10. Then the movement of the pneumatic hammer is reversed and it is retracted, the plunger is forced back by its spring 18 and the spring 9 and the hammers 10 caused to vibrate with great rapidity, the latter striking the sides of the tube cause it to jar to a greater or less degree and dislocate any foreign substance accumulating on the outside or inside of same.
The vibrations of the springs and their hammers may be regulated by the amount of air furnished the pneumatic hammer.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a boiler tube cleaner, the combination with a shell havinglateral openings with cam faces, of a plunger longitudinally movable in the shell and having a slot in its forward end, means for operating the plunger, a spring within said shell for retracting the plunger, spring hammers secured to the outer face of the shell and adjacent to its openings, pivoted blocks in the openings and bearing against the spring hammers, and lugs on the blocks and in contact with said cam faces at the end of the plunger.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDl/VARD J. BUGKMASTER.
