Description

Patented June 7,1910.
INVENTOR.
r! I ATTORNEW STATES ALBERT WARD, OF LONDON,
TUBING COMPANY, OF LONDON,
ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIG-NOR TO MCCLARY MANUFAC- CANADA.
SIDE-WALL REGISTER.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT \VARD, of the city of London, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Wall Registers, of which the following .is a specification.
My object is to devise simple means operable by the foot for opening and closing the shutter or valve of a side wall register.
Briefly my device comprises a catch slidably and rockably mounted in a slot in the face plate of the register and connected by a pivoted wire with the hinged valve or shutter of the register. Means of engagement between the catch and the face plate are provided whereby the catch may be held at different heights, the rocking of the catch serving to engage and disengage the said means.
Figure 1 is a face view of a side wall register constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail of the catch and part of the face plate of the register.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
The side wall register as a whole is of ordinary construction being provided with the usual face plate A, and the shutter or valve B hinged at its upper edge. The device for moving the valve is centrally located intermediate the edges of the face plate A and comprises the construction I will now describe.
In the face plate is formed the vertical slot C, and a catch D is provided with a lug a which passes through this slot. A stiff wire E forming a connecting rod is pivotally connected at one end of the valve B and its other end 6 is bent at right angles and passed through the lug a. This end I) is sufliciently long to prevent the lug a from being drawn out through the slot C. Toward the upper part of the slot a rib c is formed at each side of the slot which serves to prevent the end 5 of the wire becoming disengaged from the catch. At the lower end of the catch is formed a toe F which is adapted to engage with the notches d formed on the face plate, preferably through the edges of the slot C. From this construction it follows that the catch D will rock freely at its upper end and the end Z) of the wire, the slot C forming the means whereby the catch outside the face Specification of Letters Patent.

connected with the valve B inside the face plate. By pulling forward the lower end of the catch the toe F may be disengaged from the notch d with which it may happen to be engaged and the upward movement will cause the catch to rise. And this rising movement of the catch causes the wire E to open the valve or shutter to an extent dependent on the upward movement of the catch. As soon as the catch is released its weight causes its lower end to fall inward thus reengaging the toe F with any of the notches (Z which may happen to be in the proper position. If it be desired to close or partly close the valve an outward movement of the lower end of the catch (Z will disengage the toe F, and the weight of the catch, the connecting rod and the valve, will serve to move the latter toward its closed position. As soon as the valve has been closed as far as desired the toe F will reengage itself as soon as the catch is released. These movements are readily imparted to the catch by hand or by the foot.
The advantages of the device are numerous. The catch projects but slightly from the foot plate and is not in the way of the passers by. The opening and closing movements being imparted centrally to the valve, its opposite sides move evenly and there is no strain on the valve.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A side wall register provided with a face plate having a vertical slot therein, a gravity catch sliding in said slot, means for forming an engagement between the catch and face plate at different heights, the catch by its weight normally tending to engage the face plate a hinged valve and a connecting rod pivotally connected to the catch and the valve.
2. A side wall register provided with a face plate having a vertical slot and a series of notches formed therein, a catch sliding in the slot and adapted to rock into and out of engagement with said notches, a hinged valve and a connecting rod pivotally con-. nected to the catch and the valve.
3. A side wall register provided with a face plate having a vertical slot and a series of notches formed therein, a catch, a lug on said catch near its upper end projecting through said slot from outside, a hinged valve, a connecting rod pivotally connected to said valve and said lug, and a toe on said catch adapted to engage the notches of the face plate. I Y i 4. A side Wall register provided with a face plate having a vertical slot and a series of notches formed therein, a catch, a lug on each catch near its upper end projecting through said slot from outside, a hinged valve, a connecting rod pivotally connected to said valve and said lug, a transversely bent end on said rod retalnlng the lug within the slot, and a toe on said catch adapted to engage the notches of'the face plate.
5. A side Wall registerprovided With a face plate having a vertical slot therein intermediate its edges, a valve, a gravity catch exterior to the face plate and pivotally supported With relation thereto, connecting means between the, catch and the valve for moving the latter passing through the said slot, andrneans for engaging the catch With the face plate at different heights the catch by its Weight normallytending to engage the face plate.
