GAGE-PIN FOR TYMPANS OF PRINTING-PRESSES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB R. GROVE, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Philipsburg, Center county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Gage-Pin for Tympans of Printing- Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved construction for gage pins for tympans of printing presses.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 illustrates a blank from which the device is constructed. Fig. 2 is a plan illustrating the complete device in position for practical use. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the indicated line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the indicated line ll of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan of the stripper.
The entire device, save and except a stripper, is constructed of a single piece of sheet metal, preferably somewhat resilient, and is first formed into a blank (Fig. 1), preferably by stamping. The blank is then bent on the dotted line 10 and doubled flat. The blank is then bent on the dotted line 11 to produce ears 12, 13 which are clenched upon marginal portions 14, 15 (spaced by a notch 15 and pressed flat. The blank is then bent on a dotted line 19 so that the end portion 20, having marginal prongs, 21, 22, stands at right angles to parallel back portions 23, 24, said back portions being approximately parallel with and above the base portion 18. It will be observed that a slot 25 is located in the blank at the center of and below the angle line 19. The blank is then bent on a dotted line 26 and doubled flat and is again bent on a dotted line 27 to produce an anchor 28 extending through and movable in the notch 15 at right angles to and at the extremity of a locking spring 29 formed of the blank between the back members 23, 24; and the ears 12, 13. The anchor 28 and locking spring 29 are formed of an attenuated, tapering or pointed member or portion of the blank lying between and normally extending beyond the back members 23, 24-. The blank is then bent on the dotted line 16 and a tongue portion 17 thereof is brought into close proximity to the lower Specification of Letters Patent.

face of a base portion 18. The tongue is sharpened and bent upwardly at its outer end and extends across and beyond the base portion 18. The anchor 28 is in the nature of a penetrating point adapted to engage a tympan 30 and is located adjacent to and transversely of one side margin of the tongue 17. A. stripper 31, preferably formed of sheet metal, is mounted through the slot 25 and between the back members 23, 2d and base member 18. The stripper 31 is adjustable longitudinally in its seat and is held in any desired position by compression of its sides by the back members 23, 2st and base member 18.
In practical use the gage pin is placed by causing the tongue 17 to penetrate and pass beneath the tympan 30 and is adjusted to the desired location thereon. During placing, removing or adjusting of the gage pin the spring tongue and anchor are raised from the tympan (dot-ted lines Fig. 4) and the prongs 21, 22 of the end 20 are moved along the upper surface of the tympan. WVhen the desired adjustment has been attained the anchor 28 is caused to penetrate the tympan at one side of the tongue 17, as shown in Fig. 1, and the prongs 21, 22 are pressed into said tympan. It is the function of the prongs 21, 22 to prevent torsional movement of the gage pin on the tympan and to prevent insertion of a sheet to be printed between the end portion and said tympan. It is the function of the anchor 28 to prevent accidental longitudinal movement of the device on the tympan. The end portion 20 of the device serves to engage the margin of a sheet to be printed and gage the location thereof relative to a printing form. The stripper 31 may be adjusted longitudinally to any desired degree of projection from the end portion 20 and in such position engages over the printed sheet and strips the same from the printing form.
I claim as my invention 1. A blank for gage pins of generally rectangular form having a notch centrally of one margin and slits centrally of the margin opposite to the notch and also having an attenuated member between the slits and projecting beyond the slitted margin of the blank and also having a rectangular projection at right angles to the longitudinal plane of the attenuated member, said rectangular projection having prongs at its ends and an attenuated member intermediate of the prongs and spaced from them, said rectangular projection also having a slot, said blank being adapted for bending and fold ing on various lines.
2. A gage pin for tympans, comprising a base portion, back portions connected to said base portion, an end portion at an angle to one of said back portions and having an inte-gral tongue, said integral tongue pointed at one end and adapted to penetrate a tympan and also adapted to extend across and beneath the base portion, a spring tongue formed on said base portion and a stripper adjustably mounted between said back portions and base portion.

A gage pin for tympans, comprising a base member, spaced back members integral with and clamped to the base member, a tongue integral with one of said back members, an anchor spring integral with the base member and between said back members, and an end member integral with and at an angle to one of said back members.

A gage pin for tympans, comprising a base member, spaced back members integral with and clamped to the base member, an anchor spring integral with the base member and between said back members, said base member formed with a notch, said anchor spring adapted to be moved through said notch, an end member integral with and at an angle to one of said back members, and a tlgongue integral with one of said back memers.
5. A gage pin for tympans, comprising a base member, spaced back members integral with and clamped to the base member, an
anchor spring integral with the base member and between said back members, an end member integral with and at an angle to one of said back members, said end member formed with marginal prongs, and a tongue integral with said end member. 1 i

A gage pin for tympans, comprising a base member, spaced back members integral with and clamped to the base member, an anchor spring integral with the base member and between said back members, an end member integral with and at an angle to one of said back members, said end member formed with a slot, a stripper mounted through said slot and frictionally engaged by the back members and base member, and a tongue integral with said end member.
7 A gage pin for tympans, comprising a base member, spaced back members integral with and clamped to the base member, an anchor spring integral with the base member and between said back members, an end member integral with and at an angle to one of said back members, said end'member formed with marginal prongs and also formed with a slot, a stripper mounted throu h said slot and between and adapted to be irictionally engaged by said back members and base member, and a tongue integral with said end member and crossing said base member.
