VEGETABLE OR FRUIT STRAINER.
Application filed February 7, 1910.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. BEACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, county of Blair, State of Bennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable or Fruit Strainers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a fruit strainer or colander and particularly to an improvement upon my Patent #610,7 89, dated September 13, 1898.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction comprising a holding frame to which both the receptacle and sieve are removably attached and adapted to be locked in their position thereon.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing-Figure 1 is a perspective showing the parts of the invention separated; Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the parts assembled; and Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the locking latch.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
The numeral 10 designates the holding frame which comprises an annular rim having thereon a series of bayonet joints 11 disposed at different points and a supporting handle 12 extended laterally therefrom. This frame is provided with a supporting flange 13 for the rib 14: carried by the band 15 to which the sieve or screen 16 is secured. For the purpose of preventing rotation of this screen, it is provided with a pin 17 adapted to seat in a recess 18 in the holding frame 10.
The receptacle 19 is secured to the holding frame by means of the lugs 20 which enter the bayonet joints 11 and may be secured therein against rotation by means of a latch 21 pivoted upon the receptacle 22 and adapted to enter a recess 23 upon the holding frame 10 as shown in Fig. 3. This permits the removal of either the screen or receptacle from the frame.
The receptacle 19 is provided with a supporting arm 25 having a bearing 26 for the shaft 27 of the stirrer 28. This shaft is provided at its upper end with a crank 29 by which it may be operated. The shaft 27 Specification of Letters Patent.

is formed at its lower end with bifurcated arms 30 between which a stirrer blade 31 may be mounted. These arms are also provided with a lateral aperture 32 within which a loosely mounted stirrer blade 33 is disposed and extends through an aperture in the stirrer blade 31. The stirrer shaft 27 is provided with an angular portion 34; which permits its removal from the support 25 through the aperture 35 therein. The lugs 2O on the receptacle 19 are suitably beveled so as to draw the parts in close contact when shifted within the bayonet joints 11 of the frame 10. The lugs 2O may be suitably attached to the receptacle, for instance by means of a rim 36 secured thereon and provided with an operating handle 37 by which the receptacle may be shifted to disengage the lugs 20 from the frame 10. The stirrer blade 33 is of less length than the blade 31 through which it extends but its ends engage the wall of the sieve or screen. This allows space for the fruit or other material placed within the screen and the use of wooden blades prevents friction and the wearing of the sieves. These sieves are readily removable so that different sizes or characters thereof can be used and are supported against rotation upon the flange of the frame. The stirrer is also removable so that the receptacle and sieve can be used as a colander or for any straining purpose.
In the operation of the invention it will be seen that the several parts are readily separable and the device supported for use by means of the handle carried by the frame.
Vhen the receptacle is engaged with the bayonet joints, it is drawn tightly to place which also prevents any movement of the sieve and these parts may be held in such position by means of the latch for that purpose. The stirrer can be readily removed and replaced as shown in my Patent #610,7 89. The invention is adapted for all household uses and particularly for breaking up fruits and for removing seeds and skins as well as for screening or smoothing vegetables, fruits or other materials. By removing the stirrer, the sieve may be used for straining purposes and this sieve may be changed for another of suitable character for the work to be done. The invention, therefore, presents a simple, e'iicient and economically constructed form of press or colander.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a device of the class described, a receptacle rovided with depending lugs, an annular rame having thereon coperating bayonet slots to receive said lugs, and a sieve supported within said frame.
2. In a device of the class described, a receptacle provided with depending lugs, an
annular frame having thereon cooperating pivotally mounted upon said receptacle to engage one of the bayonet slots in saidframe.
4. In a deviceof the class described, a receptacle provided at its lower portion with a series of depending lugs having inclined upper faces, a handle extended laterally l from the lower portion of said receptacle.,
an annular supporting frame provided withv a series of bayonet slotsto receive said lugs, a flange within saidl frame, and a sieve provided at its upper portion withl a rib tovrest K upon said flange.
5, I -n a device of the class described, a receptacle provided at its lower portion with a series of: dependinoPv lugs having inclined upper faces, a handle extendedv laterally from the lower portion of said receptacle, an annular supporting frame provided with a series of bayonet slots to receive said lugs, a fiange within said frame, a sieve provided at its uppervportion with a rib to rest upon 1 said liange, and a lateral project-ion from said sieve to enter a coperating recess in said frame.
G. In a device of the class described, a receptacle, a sieve supported therefrom, a
stirrer shaft pivotally mounted upon said receptacle and Vprovided with bifurcated arms at its lower end, a stirrer blade mounted between said arms, and a second stirrer blade extended laterally through an aperture in said arms and first mentioned blade.
7 In a device of the class described, a receptacle, a sieve supported therefrom, a
,stirrer vshaft pivotally mounted upon said re- `eeptacle and provided with bifurcatedl arms at its lower end', a stirrerl blade mountedl between said arms, and a second stirrer blade extended laterally through an aperture in said arms and first mentioned blade, said second stirrer blade being of less length than -the first mentioned blade.
8'. Iln adevice of the class described, areceptarcle provided at its lower portion with al band.. having a handle, a series of:v down-` wardly and outwardly disposed lugs carried? by saidf band, a supporting frame having a plurality of lateral extensions each provided' with abayonet slot, and' a sieve removablysupported by said frame.
9; In a device of-'the class described, areceptacle provided atits lower portiony with; a bandL havinga handle, a series of" downwardly and outwardly disposed lugs ca-rriedf `byy said'- band, a supporting frame having aplurality of latera-l= extensions.l each providedi withv abayonetslot, al sieve)v removably sup- ,ported by 'saidl frame, and aV latch pivot-'allyV `mounted upon said band and having aY depending portion to enter an aperture-in saidj frame.
In testimony whereof I affix. my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
EDWARD A.. BEACH..
